My Growlithe Toby and I were trekking along Route 15, north of the great Grandfather Canyon and far east of Fuschia City. I had agreed to join a group from Laramie Ranch who were moving a herd of Tauros across the desert toward the base of Vermillion Jungle to graze. I got chatting to one of the ranchers who explained they were transporting a number of goods for trade. Toby seemed especially interested in the front carriage and the rancher explained that a large shipment had arrived a few days ago from Cinnabar Island.

We stopped and made camp as the sun began to slowly set over the horizon. After a few hours of drinks and stories the fire was doused in sand and we headed to our tents. Not long after, I heard something outside my tent. Taking a look I saw a young Cubone. I wanted to get some shots, so I got up and Toby followed.

However, I lost my bearings and fell into a deep ravine, hitting the ground with an echoing thud. I tried to move but a shooting pain ran up my leg. Above me Toby paced back and forth at the cliff edge, whimpering and looking for a way down.

Then, I heard a noise. I turned to see a number of large, angry Marowak appear. Toby panicked, running back and forth barking at the Pokemon until suddenly, he disappeared!

Out of nowhere, they rushed forward and began to club me with pieces of branch and bone. That attack continued for around fifteen minutes. Bruised and bloody, I covered my face with my hands when suddenly I heard a deep, loud growl ricocheting off the stoney walls above me. Standing above me was a very large Arcanine. Teeth bared with embers spitting through its gnashing jaws, it snapped at the Marowak with harrowing barks!

They quickly scattered and the Arcanine turned its attention to me. My head was swimming and I couldn’t focus, but it dawned on me as soon as he began to lick my face with a low whimper. It was Toby!
