Description Edit: Eyes tutorial, featuring this same character, is up: [link]

A sister tutorial to the last Cleaning up Lines Tutorial [link] I really appreciated the feedback that I got, so thank all of you, and I'm glad it was helpful to some.

A lot of people mentioned that it's hard for them to sketch cleanly, so the last tutorial didn't really apply. I have the same problem, and it takes a looooot of extra work on paper (erase, erase, draw, erase) to get pencil lines clean enough to start coloring off of. So.... that's why I often turn to Digital Inking!

Here are some of the ways that I do Digital Inking. I know the "trace directly over the original image" is probably the most common method, but it's hard to do without a tablet and also hard for people with unsteady hands, so that's why I talked a bit about other methods.

As usual, comments/feedback appreciated so I can incorporate them into future projects. Thanks and to all of you!

This is a great little tut, but I seem to be having a little difficulty matching the same type of lines as you. What is your brush set at? My lines become so faint at the tips you can't see them, yet yours stay dark and black. I'm wondering if maybe you have a different brush selected?

One of the tricks I use is after I pen tool with "simulate pressure" with my bigger brush, I'll go back and stroke it again with a tiny brush without simulating pressure. I totally forgot to mention this in the tutorial, but it helps with getting smooth lines across the board with some variations in thickness.

Oh cool, thanks. I was wondering how. This tut's been a huge help, I'm just learning how to digi draw, and this is a huge step

Wow.. this was much more useful than the other tutorials I've seen that just say: "Now trace over your scan." (Yeah, thanks, but that wasn't all that helpful.)

I found the pentool stuff pretty helpful, since I've never DARED touch the thing.. some of those curves get a little scary sometimes. Thanks!

And you used such a cute picture to base the tutorial on too!!

Thanks so much for this tut I didn't really think I needed it until I used the pen tool according to your directions-- it was incredible! Having always inked via my tablet, I didn't know what I was missing-- now I wonder how I managed without this info

Please check out my 'Fightin' Irish' picture [link] she was inked (and some of her coloring was edited) with your help!

How did you get the pen lines on the drawing you inked with the pen too with preassure variation to be solid like that? What happens when I do that is my lines ending up very short and only strong in the middle. Meaning that where they curve I don't get black. o.O;

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

joulee In reply to Fairyeyes [2006-03-21 07:11:55 +0000 UTC]

The "simulate pressure" does that--it makes the middle solid and the ends taper off. Try experimenting with different length paths and make the curve the middle part.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Fairyeyes In reply to joulee [2006-03-21 08:55:00 +0000 UTC]

In the end I tried making lines as long as I wanted and stroking it once with a thicker brush on stimulate preassure, and once with a thinner brush that was not on stimulate preassure.

*too stunned by awesome teaching method to say anything properly*

You've helped me out AGAIN! Especially with the Pen Tool, which I've previously hated because I can't control it properly XD I like the fact that you explain how it works as well, because a lot of tutorials out there that show you the pen tool technique just say "try it" and leave it at that

I agree that Photoshop ain't that good for freehand inking... And since I don't have Painter, that's one of the reasons why I feel back to the clean-sketch-as-proper-inking(not) method >.> And then I needed further help with the cleaning for my messier sketches, and your other tutorial helped me at that!

*glomps Julie* You're one of the most awesomest person I've ever had the pleasure to meet ^.^ Thank you!

I wanted to experiment with your linework ideas, so here's what I came up with:

flat colours
some shading, then muting, to bring lines out
black and white, almost a painting?

It comes out really nicely....but I wonder if all the drawing and pulling, and rendering and deleting takes more time than just cleaning the lines on paper

Still, a cool tool I hadn't played with.

Thanks!

Wow, it's very nice! Thanks for sharing your lovely drawings! Yeah, it does take some time to get used too, but it's much faster after a while. It sometimes is a pain, but I can't achieve the quaility of lines just by tracing, so sometimes it's worth the effort ^^

SaylaMarz In reply to joulee [2006-03-21 16:01:59 +0000 UTC]

True. Those are the kind of lines I gwet by tracening and rethickening 5 times until they're smooth! hah my boyfriend looked at the image and commented on how nice my linework was.....I had to confess the computer made it so....
