Description
Edit: Eyes tutorial, featuring this same character, is up: [link]A sister tutorial to the last Cleaning up Lines Tutorial [link] I really appreciated the feedback that I got, so thank all of you, and I'm glad it was helpful to some.
A lot of people mentioned that it's hard for them to sketch cleanly, so the last tutorial didn't really apply. I have the same problem, and it takes a looooot of extra work on paper (erase, erase, draw, erase) to get pencil lines clean enough to start coloring off of. So.... that's why I often turn to Digital Inking!
Here are some of the ways that I do Digital Inking. I know the "trace directly over the original image" is probably the most common method, but it's hard to do without a tablet and also hard for people with unsteady hands, so that's why I talked a bit about other methods.
As usual, comments/feedback appreciated so I can incorporate them into future projects. Thanks and

Very nice tutorial, will make use of it. Here's a tip: try using Corel for vectoring graphics (easiest way), version 12 exports it to CS2 without loosing resolution!
Or just get Logitech IO digital pen.

I've never heard of either of those methods for inking O_O
I hate inking with a passion (Almost always, I like my sketch better then after my inking job). This makes it sound easier x_x

I've just got photoshop and I know how to colour in the image but I can't do the outline over the pencil line art, everytime I use the "Pen tool" it fills the whole space in like this [link] I've just gone over the line and its made it thick and joined up once I've finished, could you please give me some tips of how to stop this?

You forgot a method in pentool inking. I create an entire closed path with the pentool, then fill in the path.

This is a really useful tutorial. i was beginning to dispair that there was just no way to ink with a mouse. Do you know how to sythesise the pen pressure on paintshop though? Ive had a look through the options with the pen tool, but cant find anything.

You could use the fade tool but you can't change the pen pressure without a tablet because there is only click on a mouse but fade could be useful when using photoshop!

Very helpful in deed, but as I try to use the pen tool in Photoshop, it doesn't just draw a line, it draws the curve PLUS everything in it. LIke, if I draw a half circle with the pen, it puts colour on it all, so it looks like, a half circle.
Also, how do you colour within the lines if you have the lines in a different layer?
Other than that; i'm very thankful for your teachings, I have learned a lot.

I love how you beautifully arranged this tutorial. It's so eye-appealing! ^_^ Especially with the addition for mouse/tablet difficulty (because people "desperately need" tablets to make a "good pic". I don't believe in that. x.x There are some things that are quite simpler with the mouse too, take say the pen tool... at least it would seem for me, anyway.) Coincidentally, I REALLY wanted to learn how to use the pen tool (it intimidated me from the beginning) and Flash was a whole 'nother story. And I totally agree with Painter/openCanvas being a bit more responsive than Photoshop when it comes to freehand inking. XDD Blech, I can't do it in Photoshop for my life! As for the pen tool, I substitute (out of fear) using the polygonal lasso tool over each line, and my stuff generally come out a bit blocky, but sometimes that style is all for the better! I'm gonna try my next sketch in pen. I can't wait! Thank you sooo much! ^__^ Pen seems a little less scary, now.

I sometimes use the pen tool to trace over some of my drawings either in Photoshop or Illustrator since I already master using a pen tool, but that's in the time when I was in Digital Designs. I may not have Adobe Photoshop nor Illustrator, but I only have Paint Shop Pro. 7 in my computer.
By the way, this sure likes to collect chao in containers.

First off let me say that I've learned a lot from this tutorial and cannot thank you enough for sharing it with the world. Alright so I'm trying to use your pen tool method here, and after I've set up my line and everything, and am ready to stroke path, I right click on my path, and the stroke path option is grayed out or unselectable, I've tried right clicking on the points on the path, or anywhere, but it doesnt want to work for me. I was just wondering if you had ever encountered this before, or if you knew what I would be able to do to fix this problem, I'm sure its just a little box that I need to uncheck or something like that but I cant find anything, if you could help that would be great but if not thats fine too, o and I am using photoshop 7.0.
