Description
Well....dispite what you might all think.. I'm still alive and painting.I've been working on this for the last 6 weeks-ish...not that it actaully took that long, but with all the things going on in my life at the moment, it did...
Photo updated..looking a bit more like it now.
This is the second winner of my long lost comp, entry by the amazing and very striking .
It reminds me of something I can't put my finger on...maybe the spirit of winter...or like, some sort of lost fairy tale.
At anyrate I hope I have captured what I saw in the photo.
Will write more when I'm less brain dead. I do have a lot to say about it.
Make sure you message and tell her how cool she is for letting me use this image.

You're welcome. I'll believe that.
It takes a lot more perfect blending to get those subtle shadows in, than using harsh light and painting dark shadows.

yep.
If you look at my gallery the further you go back the harder the light is..As my skills improved I started to tackle more difficult light.
But I just didn't tell anyone at the time

I try not to talk about my drawing insecurities too much either.
I learn as I go, and if anyone catches on..... well then I try to explain what's going on. The whole point is to spend my years getting better and better, eventually eliminating as many of my faults as possible.

Yep.
See eventually you get to the point where people think you are good, and anything you get wrong they analise and wonder why you did that, and what you are trying to say, because of course someone liek you wouldn't just fuck it up...the down side of that is that by the time you get there, you probably wouldn't fuck it up. Stupid logic

I don't think we'll have to worry about that too much, especially from the art critics. If God him/her/itself came down and painted a picture, they'd still find something wrong with it.
Once you get that good, your fans will continue to worship your work, and your peers will either try to learn from you, or pick you appart. I'm afraid it doesn't get any easier down the line. I think the key is to be happy with who you are, continue to learn and improve,....and not give a fuck about what anyone else thinks. That can't be easy.
You know,... when I look at a piece of artwork,... like one of your portraits for instance, I think to myself................ maybe this artist is a lot like me. He/she knows what they wanted to paint, how they wanted to paint it, why,.... It is here before me, and I can either pick it appart, or I can accept that you already know what you need to improve on, and you certainly don't need me to tell you that (unless you really ask). I also think that each piece should be appreciated as it is. If you're satisfied with it, why would I suggest you change it? You painted it according to your vision, not mine. The question is are you trying to satisfy me (the viewer), or yourself? This is why I dislike critiqueing art without knowing what the artist's intentions, questions and feelings are. I'm not sure where this post is going, so I'll stop now.

I do actaully know exactly what you mean, so yes good time to stop.
Art is so completly subjective, there's not to much point stressing over it. My aim is to appeal to people who know nothign about art. I think if you have to be educated to enjoy it, its get above itself a wee bit...
Thats totally not my original idea of course, I got it from Van Gogh, but he probably heard it somewhere else as well

Dyun In reply to Jumprabbit [2006-11-24 18:49:28 +0000 UTC]
Absolutely,.. art is subjective. Unless you follow a specific school of thought, there's no way to tell if it's good or bad,.... only if it appeals to you or not.
I love it when someone puts so much thought into a piece, that you HAVE to have some education in the art field to understand it (to get the full story out),..... but I love the simplicity of beauty in a picture as well. It's nice to see artists such as yourself serve the public in that way. Your work is very appealing. I really hope it brings you success.

you are of course right.. I also really like artists who are being clever and referencing stuff that only other artist wil get, but only if the image works on its own without need to know that.
Makes it a very cool in joke if you can pull it off

Me too. I enjoy when a bit of thinking goes into the piece. It's fun to try to decode the message if there is one. Inside jokes are fun, but not good for public viewing. It's sort of a waste.

Hi David. I've been kind of lost when it comes to DA, so I just now saw this when deciding to look at your page.
I really like that you desaturated her face a bit, keeping her hair dark, which makes for a lovely contrast and gives the image a dreamlike quality.
You'll probably think I'm crazy, but even though this painting looks nothing like it, I am kind of reminded of Venus on the Half-Shell for some really odd reason.

Things are good and crazy and f'd up and all the things that life is, I guess. My knee is healing from the surgery and I'm starting to walk more using these things called ski-walking poles. They look bizarre, but they give a total body workout. I have kind of stalled in my weightloss and mobility improvement, so I'm kicking myself in the ass to get going, and that's a lot of ass to kick (that's where the "still kicking" comes in!).
How about you? Are you back into the groove, or still feeling a bit restless?
Tina

A bit of both I guess.
I have such MAJOR stresses going on in my life, but as you probably know, after a while you get sick of waiting for the axe to fall and just get on with your life in the mean time..so yeah jsut got a whole bunch of new art stuffs, totally decked out and set up with canvas and paints and pastles and lots of cool different colour paper.
Hopefully I won't just get back into full swing only to have it ripped out from under me again, but I guess there's no point worrying. I finished one, and will have another in the next few days, so thats a big step foward.

David,
Absolutely stunning! breathtaking...
I see what you mean when you say winter... I recognise her face in the drawings of Amy Brown. She draws faeries mostly. So that combines your idea about this painting.
You've captured her in a wonderful way. Her eyes could pierce through glass.
It must be nice to have it finished

thank you.
It seems to have split the crowd a bit this one, so I'm glad at least some people have picked up what I was getting at
It's a huge weight off my mind to have it complete, so much so I've jumped straight into the next one, is about 60 done atm. wheeeeee!

well thank you..the hair actaully took forever, but since I just kinda did a little bit everytime I couldn't face tackling something more difficult (like an eye for example) it just kidna gradually got done over a month or so bit at a time. Had I tried it in one sitting I'm sure I'd have gone mad.
