Description Oil on Linen, 120cmX 90cm.

Portrait of Karen.

Photo updated, still not wild about it, but will have to live with it I guess.

As the title suggests this image was originally going to be the matching piece for Blue Velvet [link]
However since the blue one sold within a week it kinda got postponed till now.

I STRONGLY recomend working on Linen, first time for me, really very good.
This painting has been made under very difficult conditions, been dragged away from it so very many times..

Finished at last! woot!

Nam nam, tasty colours.

Fantastic as always. The attention to detail and the folds in the fabric...and her hair! It's gorgeous.

I know i've just said a lot but R Speechless.

Well thank you, I wish I'd ever had them in the same room, but there you go.

I agree the paint really sits up on the linen, making getting the colours up a lot easier

thank you kindly. I think I'm happy with it, have hardly seen it finished to be honest, the original left the studio the following morning

I've realised with that one I can't really push my current techniques much further, going to seriously read up on layering and glazeing and so on, starting to understand the need for classical methods if I want to go down this road.

RobM48 In reply to Jumprabbit [2008-06-02 17:19:14 +0000 UTC]

You should be happy with it!!
Not sure what techniques you use but the repros do look superb.
In tempera I have to paint layers and layers and then glaze, paint more layers and then glaze again and so on until the piece is finished. I do find it a satisfying way to paint and somehow it does give the paint films an almost 3D quality (which doesn't show in repros). Good luck if you go down this route, just experimenting is fun.......

Jumprabbit In reply to RobM48 [2008-06-02 23:13:23 +0000 UTC]

Well at this point I'm using a self taught method that is nearly all put down in 1 layer, with a few glazes to add reflected lights, and the odd re touch here and there.

The 3d quality you are talking about is what doesn't quite come through, I've been influnced by the eastern arts and have allways used a slightly flat line based style, but I'm thinking I can keep the line and add more depth using layers.

And yes experimenting is fun, I really don'tget ot do it much as I'm allways working to a deadline

RobM48 In reply to Jumprabbit [2008-06-03 17:56:10 +0000 UTC]

Deadlines and gallery pressures......yeah, tell me......
I think you will slowly develop the layering and glazing process and build upon the excellent work you already do.............as I approach 60 I am pleased to say that I am still developing (I hope!!). Guess the day when I don't develop is the time to hang up the brushes and tuck myself up in the green burial ground!!!!
