Description Now with 200% more Fantasia!

Yeah. This is sort of less a cell-shading tutorial and more a walkthrough a picture in which I used cell-shading. |D Sorry?

I hope it's helpful either way.

This tutorial was made using PhotoShop CS. The first one.

You know, I'm not certain. I made this on our computer back home, and I know it's a font I specifically added to the font library. Probably from dafont.com or some place like that.

I think it has numbers in the name... but couldn't tell you for certain.

where did you get that brush?
and oh my god this tutorial helped so much!!

Jupeboxgal In reply to pop32510 [2009-04-01 21:39:25 +0000 UTC]

You mean the calligraphy brushes? If you have, I think version 7 or higher (maybe lower than that) of Photoshop, you can "append" the calligraphy brushes by going to the brushes menu and... uh... doing something. Can't quite remember. xD;
But yeah. All of the brushes I used came with Photoshop in brush packs that you can append to the brushes list.

pop32510 In reply to Jupeboxgal [2009-04-02 00:17:17 +0000 UTC]

I know now! It's because you're using a tablet!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Jupeboxgal In reply to pop32510 [2009-04-02 00:23:29 +0000 UTC]

...That... that makes a difference? o.o I don't think it does. I'm pretty certain that on the school computers where nobody had ever used a tablet before it was still possible to append brush packs.

If you're talking about something completely different, I apologize. |D

pop32510 In reply to Jupeboxgal [2009-04-02 01:33:48 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm
I'm talking about the curved line (brush)
It looks like a regular line but with a tip at the end
like (ithink it's called) pen pressure
Sorry that Im so bad at explaining things

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Jupeboxgal In reply to pop32510 [2009-04-02 06:00:27 +0000 UTC]

Oh, yes, that's pressure sensitivity available to tablet users. You achieve a sort of similar effect by turning on "Shape dynamics" in your brushes palette and messing with the step and stuff, but if you're a mouse user looking for tapered lines I'd just taper the ends myself later with an eraser tool, or else try to learn how to use the pen tool.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

pop32510 In reply to Jupeboxgal [2009-04-02 06:53:50 +0000 UTC]

Yes I'll just taper with the earaser
And I know how to use the pen tool so I'm good for now

Im confused First, How do i know where the shadows mean? And Second how do i select a certain part?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Jupeboxgal In reply to Sgirl999 [2009-03-12 00:17:34 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, I shade fairly intuitively, but a good way to know where shadows go is to study anatomy. Sorry, I really don't.. have much advice for that?

By a "certain part", do you mean like how I selected just the hair later on? You can do that by holding down the "Control" button on your keyboard and clicking on the layer that you colored the hair on, or what have you. Control + click will select everything in the layer. ^_^

If you have other questions or if I misunderstood these ones, feel free to ask. (:

Sgirl999 In reply to Jupeboxgal [2009-03-12 00:32:27 +0000 UTC]

Thanks okay! Yah i mean how u just select like a hair part. Thanks! My next question is how do i select a an area where i want to put a shadow?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Jupeboxgal In reply to Sgirl999 [2009-03-12 05:04:02 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I just draw. xD The "sectioning off" where I make little bubbles to fill in - that's just me drawing. I suppose if you want REALLY CRISP shading you could use a lasso tool. If you hold down alt, I think you can switch between freeform lasso and the polygonal one. That's pretty good for making selections.

Sgirl999 In reply to Jupeboxgal [2009-03-12 23:40:24 +0000 UTC]

Do u use the blur tool to make the shadows blend? When i do that the shadows look dull -.-

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Jupeboxgal In reply to Sgirl999 [2009-03-13 00:14:59 +0000 UTC]

Um, not usually. I generally just draw. If I want to do soft shading, either I'll use a soft brush or I'll set my brush to "other dynamics" which changes the opacity as I draw, so I can layer up the shading for a smooth gradient of a sort?
If I have to do some blurring, I almost always use the smudge tool instead of the blur tool.

I did something similar to my friend Lauren, too! D= I pointed out a detail she missed and so she was like, "I can't believe I forgot that!"
