Part of a series of designs for , one of the most agreeable kaiju fans I've had the pleasure of meeting
ADDENDUM: Allow me to elaborate on the creative process -
The directive was "Godzilla Raids Again," and that was about it. Immediately, I thought of the contrast between Godzilla and Anguirus, and how, according to a few eye-witness accounts, the Gyakushu-Goji was something of a gray-green, maybe a little on the brown side, as Godzilla was frequently depicted in promotional art at the time. So, I ran with a much more desaturated brownish-Godzilla, which gives him a toned-down, yet still ancient and menacing palette to contrast Anguirus, who was reportedly a mix of blues and reds!
As for the body, I also was reminded of how much slimmer and agile Gyakushu-Goji was when compared to Shodai-Goji (the original Godzilla), and it wasn't a far leap to Finaru-Goji (from Final Wars) as well. Naturally, I wanted to squeeze in some elements of GINO and the Delgado-Goji to give him a sleek, fast and strong look - the perfect fighting machine. However, most importantly, I wanted Godzilla to be proud and noble, with a puffed-out chest, and his head held high, but with a slight incline to indicate his saurian bone structure.
I also decidedly wanted to involve his fearsome breastbone, something rarely elaborated on in past Godzilla designs - That prominent breastbone is usually why so many Godzilla toys have a light silver tone on the chest. It gives him a bit more balance too, and allows for his front visage to have some variety.
I specifically referenced Mosu-Goji for the face, with some gangly teeth ala the Gyakushu/Mire-Goji's. The spines are a personal touch, developed from Godzilla Neo's. The tail is, obviously, Delgado-Goji inspired with a crocodilian flair.
Anguirus next!

SO Awesome!Always good to see a more dinamic and less FATTER Godzilla.
Hope that this Gigantis Goji thing don't become an artwork series like G-Neo, now that Anguirus is going to come right up next

This new painterly style of yours really adds a new sense of depth to your work. It's especially noticable on the tail and legs.
Design wise this is roughly what I've always wanted to do with Godzilla, create a hybrid of all his various incarnations that's effectively multi-purpose and being easily recognizable as the monster king. Still keeping that sense of mass and power, staying true to his defining characteristics and updating it all so it has a sense of being a truly organic creature. Your commissioner has some neat ideas, The trademark pronounced sternum being armored like that is a really neat touch that makes this design stand out. He also is a nice balance colorwise, not outright black and not outright green but fittingly gatorlike in hue and texture. The yellow eyes draw attention to the face and even from this tiny shot we get a great sense of intimidation and personality.
Anguirus...I remember that head shot you did awhile ago, it will be interesting to see what the rest of him looks like now.

Aside from the eyes, FW Goji was kinda 'meh' to me. It's skull was too rounded out in the back and it looked kinda funny. It also appeared to be bit lanky for the most part though this is understandable since it was under several hundred feet of ice for a long time and propbably was malnourished....which makes its DBZ style of asskickery all the more assinine.
Heisei had some very good things but too much girth as a lot of people will tell you. You just have to see the various outtakes of the Heisei films to notice how easily the thing fell over (very hilarious by the way). It's facial details though were perhaps the best of all incarnations through most of its run (there were multiple Heisei suits and some did fall a bit flat).
The Millenium is a very mixed bag as they rebooted the series multiple times and Godzilla's look changed wildly from film to film. The Kiryu Godzilla was flat out retarded and GMK was something of an antigoji, much in the same vein as 'nightmare Gamera' in his last 90's film. Godzilla2K seems to be the mainstay of the series with the large jagged spines, narrow snout, and lots of teeth.
I think that without a strong Showa base, most Godzilla designs fall short. It's the foundation of his character and most traits he posesses stem from his Showa days. If you look closely at most Showa designs, they are campy for modern times but are also very balanced and feasible.

im not to good with these type of comments so im just going to say that i thought that some of showa was ok like terror of mechagodzilla and godzilla king of the monster other then that i didn't really like it and with the heisei i thought their wasn't really anything wrong with it and with the millenium i thought all of it was perfect and godzilla against mechagodzilla 4 was cool and FW i didn't really see a dbz look to it and i think that should be it.

I guess I should explain my reasoning a bit more lol. My impression of Godzilla in the Kiryu saga as retarded comes about because of the usual 'dead doll eye look' they use to normally designate a Godzilla as a villainous character in a film he stares in. Godzilla 1984 and Godzilla vs Mothra had the same kind of eye but their behavior made up for it. The Kiryu Saga Godzilla got beat like a bastard ginger kid almost every second in an effort to make Kiryu look heroic. He didn't handle himself like Godzilla normally does and the whole plot was all so very hammy. Not one of Godzilla's brightest moments I'll say that much.
FW's DBZness isn't evident in his appearance so much as his actions. FW Godzilla is almost a Gary-Stue of a Godzilla in that once he's out of the ice he proceedes to decimate kaiju after kaiju with very little effort. There was some serious wire-fu stuff going on in the three on one fight and during the fight against Monster X this was made even more apparent to a ludicrus level. Its part of the reason Final War is both hated and loved to the degree that it is. It's so over the top and beyond the impossible that it as well be an anime and it was almost as if Toho just sat down and said "fuck it, let's just throw half a ton of Matrix and lasers at it and see what happens". The result was complete chaos, entertaining chaos but chaos all the same.
Taking mostly Millenium Godzilla designs is fine for a Millenium Godzilla but if you want a Godzilla thats effective regardless of what era he's in and even capable of starting a new one, you need a strong foundation in the basics of his character and not make him so utterly extreme. It's a matter of taste really and so long as the monster design fits the setting it's in, it works.

all im going to say is that we all got are own opinions and the only reason liked GXM4 was for the scene with kiryu was for the scene where he is destroying bulidings and every thing and i think that should cover it oh and are u into resident evil.

I found re4 to be fun, not sure why some people whine about the gameplay not being as clunky and menu based as the previous titles. Re5 looks to be the same though even I get the feeling that the plot's ending was a bit of a cop-out. The fight with Delago in 4 was my favorite moment. Makes you feel like Ahab fighting Jaws.

yeah i agree with u i don't get how people hate re4 there was nothing wrong with it man u got to hate people like that and yeah the delago fight was like fighting jaws but with a rope on ur leg and my favorite moment in the game was the fight against el gigante ws my favorite part their and re5 i think was fine but then they go and kill wesker that is the only thing i hated about that other then that it was insane and i think that should cover that for the re thing.

RenDragonClaw In reply to HuntraG94 [2010-02-12 17:22:26 +0000 UTC]
Personally I think Wesker needed to die, it was just the way they went about it that was a tad retarded. The ending was like a lot of cheap slasher endings yah know? Ultimate evil takes a dive into dangerous enviroment, comes back up walking mutant hulk (that was underwhelming compared to...something like Nemesis) and then the heroes eventually blow his ass up and he gets dunked in the enviroment hazard (lava) and then they fly off in the getaway copter. I mean, Wesker was the last villain in the series and for it to effectively end he did need to bite it, I just think he could have turned into something a lot more 'FINAL BOSS' quality.

Oh his superman feats were awesome. I liked that initial first battle in the hanger where you're playing cat and mouse with him. It's pretty epic. It's when they land in the crator and he comes out a tentacle man that it starts getting a tad lulzy.

I just figured a super mutation like that could have been...bigger and more horror inducing is all. Maybe after he got dunked into the lava it would force a further evolution that would make him a complete monster in body as well as personality. Instead he pulls a terminator and refuses to die lol.

Trying your hand at the digital painting again, I see. Impressive as always.
Not that I don't like G-Neo Godzilla's design, nor am I in the "Matt should redo G-Neo Goji" bandwagon, but I like this a LOT better than the G-Neo design. I used to see G-Neo Godzilla being a candidate for the Legendary Pictures Goji (that is if the project gets greenlit), but after seeing this, I'd be really surprised if they came up with a better looking Godzilla.
And oddly enough, he looks like the Godzilla design from a "Godzilla vs Hedorah" dream I had a couple of years ago...weird...yet awesome...

well godzilla does appear kind of "skinnier" just like zilla, but not as much as zilla. thats the best way i can describe it. also the fact that it looks like godzilla would be able to run horizontally, similar to zilla.

Hmm, I suppose you are right, but I say the skinny-ness is just Matt's style. That's how his Neo Godzilla looks, too. But yeah, I agree, it looks quite able to run, at the very least, standing diagonally.

Pretty solid design. It has the impression of agility, and even manages to fit in the digitigrade legs, without sacrificing an ounce of his distinctiveness. It manages to invoke just about every past Godzilla design at once, into something balanced and visually impressive.
