Description Well here it is, my first Gojira Resurrection Reference Sheet! This took way too long, something like 13-15hrs over two weeks. But it was the first time I have digitally colored any art work, so I can't complain much. I hope you like.

This Godzilla is basically a slight modification to Godzilla Final Wars. The basic storyline that I am working with happens after the events of GFW. I recognize most of the previous movie timeline, but I reorder some events, delete others and I am not saying that what happend in the movies is exactly what happend in my timeline. You can view my timeline here. [link] I'll provide more details of my take on the Godzilla Universe in my journal in the near future.

"Updated - again"
Origin:
Godzilla is the ultimate biological construct of an extremely advanced civilization that inhabited the island nation of Mu at the end of the Cretaceous. Created using T-rex base DNA (but a vast majority of unique DNA) and advanced biological and metaphysical enginnering, it is designed to evolve and increase its power over time. Gojira was cast into hibernation during the destruction of MU prior to completing its evolution. Gojira Phase 1 is just the begining stage of Gojira's ultimate development. Released from hibernation in 1954 by atomic testing, Godzilla both terrorized and defended the earth for 100 years before the events that triggered its transformation into Gojira Phase 2 (A.K.A. Super-Gojira). More to come...

Attacks:
Teeth, claws, tail, dorsal plates, atomic fireballs, atomic beam, energy "pulse"

Defenses:
Extermely strong scales/hide, regeneration

Weaknesses:
Hide is not impenetrable, stubborn, only mildly intelligent

Special Abilities:
Limited telepathy, ability to see the infra red and ultraviolet spectrums, limited ability to create electromagnetic field, can "feed" directly from pure energy

Godzilla is copyright of Toho Co., Ltd.

OH.
MY.
GOD.

An original Godzilla design... that actually LOOKS like Godzilla?

Nevermind how awesome the whole image is, or the fact that you've given him the... oh man, Neo Godzilla means something else now. But you know what I mean, right? Godzilla X the Gryphon. Of course you do, you're referencing his origin.

Since your art is perfect, I only have stuff to say about your bio: you have the magnetism ability in there, but you also mentioned his tetrachromatic (pentachromatic? dinos can't see in infrared, can they?) vision, which makes me wonder why there's no mention of his magnetoception, which was a huge deal in G85/ROG.

hypergojira In reply to cultistofvertigo [2011-06-06 19:03:45 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for the comments.

Yes I am familar with Godzilla vs. the Gryphon. Neo-godzilla could mean many things so I am not sure what you mean about that. The new movie coming out next year (or is it 2013?), various redesigns on DA or the failed Imax movie.

To be completely honest it completely slipped my mind about the magnetoception. It should be in there. You would think since I had is magnetism ability, I wouldn;t have missed that one. I guess I will have to update it when I get around to it.

cultistofvertigo In reply to hypergojira [2011-06-11 07:12:56 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, that's what I was getting at, you had his magnet power but not his magnet sense.

Neo-Godzilla is what we used to call the Godzilla from the 1994 US Godzilla deal. I don't know where it came from, but everypony on Rodan's Roost was using that, so, that's its name as far as I know.

I was thinking that term would be associated with Matt Frank's "darker and edgier for the 90's" Godzilla Neo thing, but I've never heard it anywhere else. What else does it mean?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

hypergojira In reply to cultistofvertigo [2011-06-11 18:47:37 +0000 UTC]

OK. Often peoply call the Sony/US made movie version GINO (Godzilla In Name Only) or simply Zilla (from Godzilla Final Wars).

As far as I know, no version of Godzilla is generally called "Neo." Thus, from my perspective, it could mean any new version.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

cultistofvertigo In reply to hypergojira [2011-06-18 19:54:56 +0000 UTC]

???

No, the 1994 Terry Rossio/Ted Elliot Godzilla is Neo-Godzilla. I never mentioned Zilla, that's a different monster.

You probably weren't on Rodan's Roost circa 2001, so I know you didn't know. This is why I'm explaining it.

hypergojira In reply to cultistofvertigo [2011-06-19 02:34:14 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for clarifying. I've been by RR before, but I just browsed.

Regarding Neo-G, as far as I'm concerned if Toho doesn't call it Neo-Godzilla than it isn't Neo-Godzilla. But that is just me. Of course the one you are referencing was never even made, so that is a bit obscure.

Gareku [2009-02-22 12:53:57 +0000 UTC]

cool. was the back story inspired by the Godzilla vs. Gryphon script?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

hypergojira In reply to Gareku [2009-02-22 13:15:08 +0000 UTC]

Not really (it may have influenced me subconsciously). I was trying to think of a way to realistically explain giant monsters and keep a semblance of the original toho story line. I quickly realized that genetic engineering or some type of cybernetic construction or totally alien intelligence was the only way to make giant monsters plausible. They just can’t occur naturally on earth – they are to far outside the realm of what is physically possible.

Since I wanted most of the monsters to originate on earth (like their movie origins) I decided they had to be genetically engineered. If this was going to happen it had to be by an advanced civilization in the past. I remembered that Mu and Atlantis are often thought of as lost city states of great power and technical advances so they seemed like natural candidates.

Finally, I read the West of Eden series of books a long time ago (about what if dinosaurs hadn’t died out) and I came up with a race of intelligent dinosaurs that developed extreme genetic technical skill like it that series (but more so in my mythos). They didn’t have mechanical items, everything was living and genetically engineered. This was perfect for what I wanted to do. Of course dinosaurs were still wiped out 65 million years ago, it just happened differently. It was this cataclysm that put the giant kaiju to sleep.

Does that clarify it?!

You got it. Gojira is the correct english translation for the Japanese monster. When Gojira was originally brought to the united states there was not a standard method of translating Japanese to English. Shortly thereafter a standard was created and the the correct translation was Gojira, but Godzilla had already been established and has been in use ever sense.

The "fireball" might be nice to have if Big G gets locked up in a grapple/constriction situation (i.e. G vs. King Ghidorah) and doesn't have the time to charge up a high-yield beam...or against a speedy foe who's landing a string of attacks, again denying him time & space for a death ray.

On a lighter note, it could also be seen as a sort of homage to Gamera...who was inspired by Godzilla to begin with, so far as I can tell!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

hypergojira In reply to geekspace [2007-08-22 12:54:31 +0000 UTC]

Right on both accounts. I think of the "fireball" as more of a quick strike attack compared to a fully charged beam attack and Gamera was definitely an inspiration.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

geekspace [2007-08-20 00:13:59 +0000 UTC]

Ehh, they didn't really bug me...I thought they looked neat, but knew they didn't quite make sense. Then again, neither does a vast portion of the kaiju genre...which doesn't mean a little exposition or explanation of a given monster's abilities can't go a long way.

Were I to ever try any revisions like the ones you've done here, 'my' Goji might have two power settings for the beam: 'basic' red-gold (can be fired quickly, inflicts burns & kinetic force, but not a one-hit killer) and 'full-power' blue (takes a couple seconds to power up, far higher yield, hits like a hammer). Basically a flip-flop of what the Heisei series showed us (that, and if it came to that, 'Burning' Goji's patches would be white-hot. Cool costume concept, though).

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

hypergojira In reply to geekspace [2007-08-20 15:20:25 +0000 UTC]

Interesting. I have always imagined that Gojira could do a short, less powerfull "fireball" and then a more powerfull and sustained beam. Though they are always a similar blue/bluei-white color in my mind. But then again, I really like blue!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

geekspace [2007-08-18 03:10:31 +0000 UTC]

Hmm...the lighting looks just fine to me. Interesting perspective regarding the eyes, and one sort of shown by "Burning" Godzilla (whose eyes matched his glowing patches AND overcharged ray) in G vs. Destroyah.

And yes, classic blue would be my choice...for Big G's most powerful beams, anyway. I found it a bit funny in the Heisei films that they ignored the Roy G. Biv chart and made Godzilla's supercharged beams red.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

hypergojira In reply to geekspace [2007-08-18 03:59:02 +0000 UTC]

The red beams always annoyed me too.
