Description Update: I changed the dorsal plates, tweaked the nose and modified the shading on the chest slightly. These seem significant to me, but they may be minor to everyone else - the devil is in the details!

Here is Gojira phase II (aka “SuperGodzilla). This is really my first redesign of the Godzilla concept as Gojira phase I is really just GFW with a little tweak. This is not exactly what I wanted it to be, but it is close. The stance is not as dynamic as I would have liked for instance. I kept reworking and reworking certain pieces and finally just had to stop. As an example: I made at least 5 different teeth arrangements before going with the classic single exposed (each side) canine look. Furthermore, I kept this drawing rougher than the rest because I thought it fit GII’s rough and tumble nature. Anyway, on to the good stuff!

Origin:
By 2054 the UN AKM (Anti-Kaiju Mecha) units have contained or destroyed most of the world’s kaiju. However, Gojira, now 100m tall, has remained uncontrollable and a continued threat. Furthermore, since the appearance of Goji-Jr. during Operation Final Wars Gojira has become increasingly hostile. The US supports a direct nuclear attack, but the UN decides to build a giant Mecha to finish Gojira once and for all. After completion of the AKMM01 it is quickly sent into battle against Gojira. Though only at 75% power (3 of 4 fusion reactors online) AKMM01 thoroughly defeats Gojira, but the fallen kaiju is able to escape. Shortly thereafter the US super –sub the Eliminator locates Gojira recovering on a small atoll in the pacific. Believing the AKMM01 was unable to “finish the job” the commander of the Eliminator launches 3 nuclear cruise missiles at Gojira. The missiles explode around Gojira, engulfing it in an atomic fireball many times the size of the tiny atoll. However, when the dust clears a new and vastly more power Gojira (G-II) stands in the ruins of the tiny island, for at the instant of detonation a biological trigger was set off allowing Gojira to absorb the nuclear power and use it to release its own hidden strength. And now it is G-II’s turn!

Attacks:
Teeth, claws, tail, dorsal plates, atomic fireballs, atomic beam, energy "pulse"

Defenses:
Extremely strong scales/hide, near instantaneous regeneration, ability to create energy field that absorbs or deflects energy attacks

Weaknesses:
Unknown

Special Abilities:
Telepathic communication, ability to see the infra red, ultraviolet, x-ray and (later) gamma spectrums, ability to create electromagnetic and gravitational fields, can "feed" directly from pure energy, ability to move at supersonic speeds

Very tough and powerful looking version of Godzilla, his spines remind me of GMK Godzilla a bit, and his face is kinda like the 1985 Godzilla.

Thank you, I was going for the tough and powerful look Yes the head of the 1985 version is one of my favorites.

always great to see more variations of godzilla

On a side note, Have you played Super Godzilla on the SNES?

It has a 'super' godzilla form that is suspiciously similar to spacegodzilla. they supposedly combined Ghidorah's DNA with godzilla's... anyways...

Thanks adn thank you for the Gojira2 and King Ghidorah faves as well

I haven't played that game, but I have seen pics of super godzilla. I'm not found of the "shoulder pads" of either design to be honest.

lol@ shoulder pads... NP on the faves, good stuff.

As far as the game goes, I'm basing my kaizer godzilla on the ghidorah DNA fused with godzi's, except that it makes a more prominent change in Godzila.

I've been thinking about doing this for other monstes...

the head height is 10 inches I think. with wings it'll be a couple of inches taller

hypergojira In reply to TGping [2008-08-29 18:18:57 +0000 UTC]

thanks, i didn't realize it had wings - I thought they were tentacles I did a couple sketches of a winged godzilla ages ago (back when i was struggling with my love of godzilla versus my love of dragons), but yours looks much more promising. good luck!

Good call on the nose-bridge...I especially dig the more 'traditional' theropod aspect of your Godzillas' mugs.

Thanks, that is what I am going for, but not too much - not quite the full theropod treatment.

Niiice work on the new dorsals...their perspective doesn't look too bad from where I'm sitting, and their structure's delightfully old-school (especially that funny little two-pointed fin at the head of the main row).

As for your other tweaks, I can't really tell how the snout was altered (some more nostril definition?), but the 'ecs' definitely stand out a little better now.

hypergojira In reply to geekspace [2008-05-09 10:53:35 +0000 UTC]

That strange little dorsal plate has always been my favorite. I intend to make it (or at least a version of it) a constant feature throughout my Gojira designs.

I made the nostrils smaller on the bust and reduced the definition of the "bridge" of the nose. This design was not supposed to have the classic godzilla nose bridge, but it had inadvertently crept back in. I just tried to reduce it as much as I could without changing to much. It was more apparent on the bust than full body image.

Rounding 'em out would more/less solve my problem with the fins...that 'flatness' you note was the only big sticking point for me. As for proportions, I always loved the '89 suit (aka "Bio-Goji"), and wish I could find another figure like the 3-incher (part of a Japanese set) I had as a pre-teen.

I couldn't wait, I've updated G2 with the more traditional dorsal plates. There is still something off about how they are drawn (the perspective is wrong or something), but I like them much better than the old ones. Let me know what you think.

With the exception of a single detail, Phase-II Gojira is one fearsome upgrade: a wicked balance of bestial muscle, rugged hide & trim athletic efficiency. Said detail would be the dorsals, which just seem excessively simplistic...too many near-straight lines in their construction. That said, their compact nature makes for an interesting practical contrast with the Millennium Gojis' hernia-indicing spine rows.

That said...the detail poured into G-II's dermal armor (especially the chest-scales) is awesome; that upper torso is lean-but-mean; the impressively-taloned (and balanced) feet are wicked; the tail is a nigh-perfect balance of solid limb & extended whip...and that skull. This guy's head is reminiscent of the '62 and '84 G-incarnations: just big enough to add some bite to Big G's bark & beam, with a nice solid lower-jaw structure...and that narrow, vaguely sinister eye, combined with those functional-looking chompers, makes for one fearsome mugshot.

All in all, it was a pleasure to find this update, H-G.

Thank you as always for your comments.

I must admit that I keep tweaking this one ( I changed the head detail after I posted it and updated the post), but the last thing I targeted for adjustment are the dorsal plates. The last thing i thought is how flat they look. The don't seem to belong with all of the detail I put in the rest of the drawing. I do like their size and I like that the largest plates are higher up on the back, but I really have to go back and flesh them out some more. I am think of going with a more classic rounded edge look - what do you think?

I have always thought the '84 Goji was one of the best proportioned and I often look at pictures for reference. I just wish I could find a good vinyl of the '84 goji at a reasonable price.

I love this. Goji's scales look wonderful, very rough and thick looking, and his legs and arms look powerful. I like his head, with the classic single exposed fang, and his spines look good. I like the little back story, and I'm now wondering just what AKMM01 could be. Very nice!

hypergojira In reply to Scatha-the-Worm [2008-05-05 23:45:48 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, i'm glad you liked it.

The AKMM01 is a giant mecha, Anti-Kaiju Mega (I think - i've kinda forgotten)Mecha model 01. Unfortunately i am horrible at drawings machines, so I don't think I will post a reference sheet. Unless i decided to commission someone on DA to draw me one.

Ooo, me likely. He looks powerful enough (although I might add a bit more musculature to the legs, though then again that may end up as a sort of thunder thighs look) yet also light enough to be an active brawler. Well done!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

hypergojira In reply to TyrantisTerror [2008-05-05 22:30:06 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. I am trying to go for a very "athletic" look, so I didn't want to go to big with the legs. This Goji is meant to very strong and fast, so I wanted to minimize anything that would visually slow it down. It really love sto mix it up hand to hand.
