Description Well... Around the end of November 2016, several things happened...

  • Maybe one or two weeks later, a different friend invited me to watch a certain turtle-centric Michael Bay movie with her. Which prompted me to catch up on a certain franchise of which I barely had a passing knowledge at that point.
  • I somehow got the idea of sewing some pellet-filled bags that can be tossed around for light exercise, such as playing catch and trying to learn how to juggle. Perhaps in an interesting shape, like fish or something...
  • While catching up on the franchise mentioned above, I remembered that my sister had recently told me about discovering a certain cartoon show on TV. So I had a closer look and started watching that show with her regularly.

By the end of the year I had developed a serious addiction to the 2012 Nickelodeon incarnation of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and suddenly the whole plan came together:
I was going to make some cute turtle plushies, based on the pattern of the little felt turtle and weighted with pellets for good tossability.

But for this, I wanted to make sure that I got the shape right. I decided to make a prototype and work out exactly which parts of the original pattern needed improvement.

Thus, Cara was born in January 2017 - with a better-looking head, a completely re-designed shell, and filled with both polyester stuffing and plastic pellets. She is made from velvet which is my favorite fabric for small plushies.Β With a length of about 10 centimeters, she fits nicely in my hand.Β

Now she belongs to my mom who also gave her that name: "dear", "precious", "beloved".

Hmmm... I didn't base her on a particular species, but I looked it up and it does seem to fit.
Her neck is too short, but there is the grayish color, the rather smooth carapace... and what's most interesting, the small plastron!
That last one was not intended on Cara (after all, I was still experimenting with the pattern), but it's an amusing coincidence. Thanks for letting me know!

You did a great job on Cara here! The patterning on the shell is really well done! May I ask how you did it? Also, I love the eyes. Did you embroider them?

Thank you very much!

Yes, I embroidered the eyes.Β And as for the shell pattern: I started with drawing the overall shape of the carapace, then I cut the paper apart to divide that shape into the outer ring and the individual inner scutes.
Cara's plastron and the bridges are one piece, just with additional stitches to mark the borders of the scutes. (Later, for the boys, I separated the plastron scutes just like I did on the carapace.)

Sewing the carapace scutes into the outer ring was really tricky. But I wanted this ring to be seamless, so I had no choice but to deal with it.
