Description
And here it is.Amateur Animation as I know it. It's a HUGE file because I was insane and decided to do ALL the programs I'd ever animated with. From left to right: Photoshop 8, Photoshop Elements 3.0, and Paint Shop Pro 8. I really do hope it helps, and I shall have to hide from all the dialup users who will be out for my blood after this loads. Sorry! If it gets to be too much of a hassle I'll restructure and do it as three separate tutorials. Woo!Feedback is greatly appreciated - I tend to get wordy, and I want to know if it's confusing! It's easy enough to clarify.
And if you use this to make your own animated goodies, I would love to know!
Enjoy!

Well, I try to answer questions as best I can even when busy Especially when it's clarification on a tutorial, hehe!
Sorry to hear you're having computer troubles, I hope they get resolved quickly!

thanks, and yep, thanks to my husband .. my computer is back to normal.. maybe even better than normal.. for now... *looks around all nervous*
anyway, as for my questions.. well the main one i keep coming back to is... i dont understand layers!! not - at - all!
not just with animations, but... nothing makes sense! i see all kinds of cool things where people use layers but its beyond me how they do it!
..i feel like Donkey, trying to understand what Shrek is saying about layers....

Hm, what art program do you use? Only some programs like Photoshop and Jasc Paintshop Pro support layers. There's also GIMP ([link] ) that is free and also supports layers and will let you animate.

i have PS7. i dont know much about it really. a friend gave it to me back in 2001 or 2002.. and he lived in the UK and I in the US. so as far as updates and differences.. i dunno... the tutorial looked like my program so i'm guessing they're the same thing.
there used to be a free animation program.. active X or something.. i used it in the past and its simple.. but i only did simple drawings with it. i think it was gif only formats... not sure.... i'll have a look at GIMP and see if its something like i'm used to... but honestly i WANT to learn to use photoshop! i will always have PS7, but i may not always have access to the net or programs downloaded from the net..

PS7 is good! It's what I used for this tutorial. I only mentioned GIMP in case you didn't have an art program and needed a free one. PS7 usually comes with ImageReady for animation, but if you don't have that you can always try GIMP.
I don't know what you already know about layers, but they can be a pretty powerful tool for both drawing and animating. You can stick an eye on one layer and the head on another, and any erasing you do on the 'eye' layer won't affect the head layer below it. Or you can put text on a layer above a picture and move it around without moving the picture. With animating, layers are important because each layer is going to become a frame in the animation.
How in-depth of an explanation do you want? I could make a quicky tutorial showing step-by-step how to use layers if you need it.

i know abso-freakin-lutely nothin about layers lol what little i do know came from your tutorial. when i turn on PS7 i always click off all the windows except for my tools and colour pallet. it took a fair amount of searching to find the window for layers and then i was like "...k.. now what?"
that would be awesome if you could do a tutorial on layers! i just hope i'm not imposing my ignorance on you...

You need to save the animation as a .gif. Right now it looks like you have it saved as a .psd. When saving in ImageReady, go to Save Optimized in the File menu and make sure you save it as a .gif. I hope that helps!

Thanks, that was helpful, do you how to insert music to the animation in photoshop 7?
๐: 0 โฉ: 1
Katolin In reply to msofiahv91 [2007-08-08 23:40:38 +0000 UTC]
You're welcome! Unfortunately, Photoshop only does .gif files. To animate with music/sound, you need Flash. Sorry!

How do you merge the wing outline and color layer? I just got photoshop and am trying to figure it out...^-^;
๐: 0 โฉ: 1
Katolin In reply to sacialover [2007-06-16 18:21:36 +0000 UTC]
Make sure both layers are visible and right next to one another (no layers in between on the layer box), then click the little right-facing arrow on the top of the layer box. Near the bottom there should be the command 'Merge Layers.' Alternately, you could go to the Layers menu at the top, and it should be near the bottom of that menu as well.
I hope that helps!

Wow! I've been wanting to learn flash and stuff. I didn't realize Ps could do this! Just used your tut and I got this figured out! A new form of art has been opened up for me! wow One problem. I don't know what to save it as. GIF? That doesn't work. It's just an image. hmm...
๐: 0 โฉ: 1
Katolin In reply to ryfvs [2007-06-16 18:24:49 +0000 UTC]
Sorry for the late reply! To save it as an animated image, make sure you going to 'Save for Web' instead of 'Save As' and save as a .gif Also, if you open it up again in Photoshop it'll still look static because Photoshop itself doesn't support animation. Try opening the image in your web browser and see if it works.

ryfvs In reply to Katolin [2007-06-16 21:40:57 +0000 UTC]
Thank you That works It opens with the web and quicktime, but why is it choppy when I play it in Flash?
๐: 0 โฉ: 1
Katolin In reply to ryfvs [2007-06-16 22:34:08 +0000 UTC]
I'm not sure exactly how Flash works as I've never had the opportunity to play with it But maaaaybe it's because Flash loads each frame as an image and puts too much of a delay between them? Not sure, so you might ask someone with Flash or check the help menu.

ryfvs In reply to Katolin [2007-06-17 01:32:26 +0000 UTC]
Yeah. On flash, a head will pop up, an arm will blink... just crazy messed up.
OK Thanks anyway. I'll be working with Ps animation for now. It seems so much easier
I appreciate your replies and the tutorial

Katolin In reply to shipo159 [2006-08-20 23:29:25 +0000 UTC]
I've yet to find a free animating program. ImageReady comes with Photoshop, Animation Shop comes with Paint Shop Pro. The programs themselves can be pretty pricey, but if you shop around you can probably find a cheaper older version with the animation capabilites. I hope that helps!

okay one more question..... how do you save the animation? It wont let me save it as a jpg or a gif...
๐: 0 โฉ: 1
Katolin In reply to shipo159 [2006-08-21 01:22:41 +0000 UTC]
Go to 'Save Optimized As...' in the file options. Then it SHOULD let you save as a .gif. Don't save as a .jpg, because that file type doesn't support animation.

it worked, but when I submitted it (then deleted it) the other layers were transparent, sorry if I'm being a burdon, but thats all I need to know, then I'm on my own. I'm giving a lot of credit to you in the description too, when I get it up :3

Katolin In reply to shipo159 [2006-08-21 01:52:34 +0000 UTC]
Oh, you're not being a burden! I enjoy helping But I'm not sure I understand your problem. Does it just show one layer as a first frame then many blank ones, or do your layers change transparency? Maybe if you linked me to the image I could help

shipo159 In reply to Katolin [2006-08-21 01:57:03 +0000 UTC]
[link] there it is :3 how can I make it repeat?
๐: 0 โฉ: 1
Katolin In reply to shipo159 [2006-08-21 02:17:13 +0000 UTC]
Oh, I see! It's actually easy enough to fix. See, each layer is going to be a frame. So before you tell it 'Make frames from layers' you need to duplicate the bottom layer for each moving layer and merge each moving layer onto the separate bottom layers. So, you'll end up with four or five layers with the same face but different ear positions. Yay! Then you can go make all layers into frames Now, to make it repeat, go to the little animation bar with all the frames in it. At the bottom left there should be a little box that says "Once" and has a little arrow pointing down. Click on it and change it to 'Forever'.
I hope that helps some! If it confuses you more I can do a few picture references too to help clarify

shipo159 In reply to Katolin [2006-08-21 02:31:21 +0000 UTC]
okay....umm.... so I need to do it all over? I dont know how to merge the screenshots would help a lot, I promissed my dad I would make an anomation for them, so I want to get this memorized ASAP
๐: 0 โฉ: 1
Katolin In reply to shipo159 [2006-08-21 03:34:50 +0000 UTC]
No, you wouldn't need to do it over. Just take the layer with the main part of the image and make a few copies of it (right click - Duplicate layer). Select and put one of the duplicates beneath each ear layer. Then, select an ear layer. Click the small arrow on the layer box and select 'Merge Down.' ([link] ) This combines the selected layer with the layer beneath it. Repeat until all the ear layers have been merged to the non-transparent layers. You'll end up with a chain of four or five images that are similar with only the movement as a difference. Then, you Make Frames from Layers and everything should work!

well the first frame is solid, then the rest are transparet, ya know with the gray and white squares... I'll put it up, but then I'm gonna delete it to put the new one up after the little conversation is done
