Description
here is a scan of my first gouache attempt. I got so frustrated at one point i walked away and almost didnt come back. But I did.Im a perfectionist and I work very tightly in eveything else I do. I like control and precision. For that reason I find this medium challenging but also liberating. I can let the paint do what it wants to sometimes and it forces me to realize "thats how it goes, dont fight it, accept it"
there's a lesson in there somewhere.
Anyway this is another (possibly minor) character from the same project. An alaskan husky. very early concept. No name yet, but hes about 1 yr old.

Gouache is easier to control when it is less watery and more the consistency of melted ice cream (you just have to work quickly to get a smooth application of paint). I used gouache when I painted this mandala ( [link] ), and I was able to get very precise in most of the details (as you can see with the center knot). In this approach, it helps to map-out ahead of time where you're going to paint each color (including the variations in shadows), like you're own paint-by-numbers.
In this painting of trees ( [link] ), I penciled in every shift in value and hue and mixed my paint as the values built up. It is a more graphic approach to painting, but given that gouache is easily reactivated, blending the colors together wouldn't likely be difficult if you wanted things to look more painterly.
If you do like the look of more watered-down gouache, I'd highly recommend researching watercolor techniques (as that is essentially what you're doing). The main difference between painting normal watercolor and diluted gouache, I think, is that glazing in gouache is much more difficult than in watercolor.
Let me know if you'd like more information. I know a lot of useful websites about watercolor. Information on gouache is a bit more difficult to come by it seems, but perhaps more information has become available since I last checked...
Anywho, happy painting!

Thanks Kay. I am glad you enjoyed my paintings. Here are a few sites I found with solid information that might be of interest to you:

That looks EXACTLY like my friend's dog Titus. He's an AussiexCorgi mix. Absolutely adorable, but looks so much like that. Floppy ear and nose and everything.
Enough nonsense. It's very nice work!

Gouache is actually a super-tight painting medium if you don't water it down so much, you are kind of using it like watercolor here. If you add only a small amount of water you can make very controlled shapes and get a very clean precise image.

I bitched at you until you finished. Paid off!
I usually like "mistakes" more than I hate them when I'm painting. The only times I don't like something is when I make an active decision and it doesn't pan out. Sometimes the paint is smarter than me.

Lovely! Those eyes look beautiful, and the grin makes him even more interesting.
My favourite technique is a mix of watercolor and ink - it's very easy to make a mistake that you cannot conceal later. So don't worry - the most important thing is to never give up. Just that will make you a great artist one day

Refreshing and very life-like.
Once again, a very nice quache painting. It makes such a big difference to the "aseptic" digital painting - and gives the drawn character in its "painterly-style" a new appearance.
"Goache a day" sounds just perfect C:

I know exactly what you mean, It's so hard for me to give up control over what I am working on and work loosely. I can't cope without my ctrl-z
You're doing an amazing job! I really am looking forward to seeing more
And I have to say I LOVE THE PINK NOSE SPOT!

thanks a lot plague. Im not surprised - we are similar artists I think! Maybe you should play with gouache sometime, or have you??
Thanks I like the spot too. Im going to try "a gouache a day" for a while so...there will be more

XD I think we definitely have a lot in common! I haven't played with gouache really, but I would like to. I just took up painting with acrylics though!
I hope you do a gouache a day! It's really awesome to see work from you again!
Do you still go to any conventions?

I've recently disocvered guoache myself, and find it to have the same appeal. Digital art is less about sponteneity. But in the old days, people didn't have that much control.

The colours look so nice together and the overall effect of the gouache paint is quite wonderful. I'm really looking forward to this new graphic novel. Is it too early to know what medium the comic will be done in?
