~Multimedia Poser Tutorial 1~Yay!! 100,000 page hits!!
**IMPORTANT**
You will need Adobe "Flash Player 10", so make sure to upgrade your player to the latest version or else the tutorial might not run at all. Updating your Flash player is very easy - just go here [link] and get it installed. If you can press a button, you can do it!
Want to get started with the 3D program I used to create my entire dA gallery? Here is your chance! This is an easy to follow interactive multimedia presentation that will give you step-by-step instructions to help you learn the Poser 7 basic concepts and functionality.
The tutorial covers the basics such as configuring the 3D workspace, loading figures, posing them, loading clothes, conforming clothes to figures, using materials, hair, lights, cameras, and much more. I wrote about 13 chapters for this tutorial, and you will be asked which ones you want to see, so you can skip chapters whenever you want. Each chapter is loaded with notes and hints that might help you get the best out of Poser 7.
This is my very first tutorial and I don't have a clue how useful it will be to you, so feedback is important if you want it to improve. This was designed for you to use side by side with Poser, so you can follow the instructions hands-on directly in the program. This was NOT meant to teach you how to use Poser without the program. For that I would have to go insane with screen-caps and the tutorial would be come too large to be practical. As it is now it is about 750Kb, which is not bad for 13 interactive multimedia chapters.
As a side note, people have asked me to create a tutorial about how to get started with Poser, but I never gave it much thought until I've learned Flash programming. A Poser tutorial would otherwise be too much work to do with plain HTML on a web page, but with AS3 (ActionScript3) it's a different story. Not only I can present much more information in a single area, but I can also make it multimedia and interactive.
Instead of fiddling with rather painful Flash timelines, I decided to use my "AGE-4" game engine (written entirely in AS3) and create a tutorial that runs like a Japanese graphic novel. I don't think anybody has done that before (that I know of). This way, creating the tutorial was a matter of writing a text script for my AGE-4 game engine and let it generate the interactive multimedia presentation for me. So in the end, no painful Flash timelines were used (yay!!). ^^
All AS3 programming here was created 100% by me from scratch, including the "AGE-4" game engine that was used to create this tutorial. The "Ken" 3D avatar shown in this tutorial was designed by me, 3D clothing created by me, and figure is AnimeDoll by MayaX. A Spanish version is coming next, kindly translated by ~villena-mx directly from Mexico! Many thanks to him for the Spanish translation collab work! ^__^
Hope you like and thanks for coming by!

has great renders and I can't see this kind of work being done in Daz and the renders are faster in Poser. Also you can't get fur and stuff to work in Daz that I know of

I have already wrote about a thousand reasons why I have never liked DS, but I wanted to hear it from you without any bias. I think DAZ3D has included a LOT of new features to version DS3, but many of their featured plugins were created by 3rd party and they don't actually deliver in a production environment when compared to the Poser built-in features. Namely those are dynamic cloth and animation tools. In addition, dynamic hair and the face room are still absent on DS, and the new node-based materials are still no match for the Shader Nodes from Poser. I think DS has improved in huge steps with the release of DS3, but some of those improvements are still based on broken technology that look like it was slapped into DS in a hurry, where dynamic cloth is still in beta stages, and AniMate has unusable animation editing capabilities.
But I am glad DAZ3D is pushing Smith Micro with some more serious competition. Without that, Poser would never progress like it did with the (late) release of version 8. ^^

Do you have version 8? I have Poser 7 but for some reason the file I have became corrupted somehow and I can't open it. Is that normal or am I just stupid and did something wrong?

I was one of the 1st ones to buy Poser8 because Poser7 doesn't work with big runtimes. Being a developer, my runtime gets bigger all the time. If your Poser got corrupted (never happened to me), all you have to do is reinstall it. Besides your personal settings, nothing will be lost.

I went back to Daz I guess I have to save up for 8 then It's too expensive to buy now a physical shipping with backup costs about $240 I don't have the file to re install it anymore and I can't re download it with my phone's Internet so saving up for a physical copy is my only option. Too bad I bought the render studio for version 7

Don't worry about Render Studio or any other python plugin for Poser7 because they will all work nicely with Poser8 - it's not wasted money.

Really? I thought it wouldn't work because there is a render studio for version 7 and another one for version 8.

I bought Render Studio for Poser7 and it still works perfectly well in version 8.

Thank you! Installing ZIPPED packages into Poser is too easy for a tutorial. Just unzip everything into your Poser folder and that's it. For example, "C:\Program Files\Poser\" or something like that if you are using Windows. When you unzip the packages, make sure that "Keep directories" is checked.

My Poser packages are well organized, so they always contain a "runtime" folder and all contents are inside of it in the ZIP file. A few developers may be lazy and don't include the "runtime" folder to the package, and this may mess up things during installations. It is always a good idea to look inside the ZIP files before installing, to make sure it contains a "runtime" folder.
If you are not being able to see the new contents in Poser, check the following:
1. find out *where* you installed Poser. Mine is at "H:\Poser 7\". Yours might be different.
2. double-check that a "runtime" folder exists inside your Poser directory.
3. double-check that your ZIP file has a "runtime" folder (all of mine does).
4. double-check that your ZIP program (the one you use to open ZIP files) is set to "preserve directory structures".
Once you checked all of the above (you only need to do that once), unZIP the packages you want to install over your Poser installation folder, and make sure the "runtime" folders from both coincide. You know they do when you are asked if you want to overwrite your "runtime" folder. That usually shows like "runtime folder already exists. Overwrite?" or something like that.
If none of the above works, that can only mean your Poser installation is corrupted and needs to be reinstalled. This may also happen if you installed Poser more than once (or multiple versions) in different directories, and you might be installing things to the wrong version.
Hope this helps! ^^

This tutorial only requires Poser. I used version 7 at the time this was created, and last month I upgraded to version 8 - but the basics are still the same.

I don't, but there are many out there in the major Poser forums, like DAZ3D and Renderosity. There is one in particular that I like because it was meant for Poser and 3DSMAX, made by MarkDC, and I bought it from Renderosity many years ago. It's a 3 parts video tutorial and that's all I ever had available to get started.

You have no idea how helpful this was. Seriously.
Before, I had no idea how to get rid of the default model.
Currently, I'm trying to switch to a female model and create reptile scales and work with bones and all that and had no idea where to start.
This hands-on tutorial was awesome and thanks for posting it.

Like....how about one for creating other female/male models?
Or....scales for that matter.
And....making certain clothes...?
Always wanted to do fantasy-based things with poser like make reptile people among other things.
I SOUND LIKE A TOTAL N00B HOGAWD D:
Sucks being a beginner at something.

ken1171 In reply to In-The-Machine [2009-08-10 08:21:05 +0000 UTC]
Poser is not a modeling application, so it cannot be used to create new figures or clothes. You will have to use another program for that, like Blender3D, Hexagon, 3DSMAX, and so on. There are many options. ^^
As for scales, it feels more like a case of a texture with bump or displacement map. Or you can also buy a ready made character with scales --> [link]

The hair went in the wrong place...how do I get it to work in the right place. It goes to her chest always...
I'm confuse why it wont work, got any ideas?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
ken1171 In reply to melantha-violet [2009-08-04 06:08:06 +0000 UTC]
Is the hair a conforming figure or a prop? To find this out, just see what library you are loading it from. If it's a prop, then just select the hair and increase the "translate Y" to put it at the right height. If it's a figure and you've conformed it to the character and it loads at the wrong place, then the hair was not meant for this figure. Conforming hair only works with the figure it was created for. There are ways to force conforming hair to work with any figure, but to help you with that I will need to know if you are using Poser or DS. ^^

Poser has a Mac version. I am not sure if DAZ Studio (the freebie) runs on a Mac because I don't use it.

Poser is not free, but DAZ Studio is. DAZ Studio has the same basic functionality of Poser and only lacks the more advanced features, so it is an easy way to get started for free. ^^

The new Poser 8 will try to improve on OpenGL support because that has NEVER worked for me no matter what video card I had in the last 10 years. Once OpenGL gets to work properly, good part of the work will be handled by the video card (if it supports OpenGL hardware acceleration) and the CPU power will be of less importance.

I am a PC guy, but things should work the same way with Macs. If you don't know how customize your hardware, perhaps you should ask for assistance from somebody with more experience so that you buy the right video card and install it properly.

I've been looking for a good program to start up attempting 3D art myself. I have seen your amazing work time and time again, and I think i've decided to try out Poser.
Thank you very much for this tutorial i'm sure i will end up watching it a few more times in the near future hehe. However, if there is a program you might reccomend over Poser more for starting up I'd gladly take any advice!
