Description
NO PHOTOSHOP NEEDED!Hopefully people who use markers may find this of some help. It takes practice to get markers to work well in your favour, although even the best of us will get marker ink bleeding over our inking lines a little.
I put this tutorial together to show you how I tidy up minor bleeds in my marker peices without taking it into photoshop. True, you can use a computer program to tidy up the scan but...I happen to like the original to look nice and clean as well, and want to rely on the computer as little as possible (some people don't even have programs like photoshop, which makes things even harder for them).
PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE ASKING ME ABOUT THE GEL PEN: I REALLY can't help you out on where to buy them, as I don't live in America/UK/Australia ect, and I don't know of online sites either. All I can tell you is that I like to use the brand of Gel Pen called 'Hybrid', if you want to use that kind, you need to research where to find it yourself. :3
EDIT: The webpage changed their layout, in any case, there are some white gel pens that can be bought here: [link]

You should try using Faber-Castell artist pen. I started using them and they are really great. But they're expensive because they are a high quality pen. I'm using the brush pen but they come in 4 sizes.... superfine, fine, medium, and brush. Just to let you know if your interested. Oh and the best thing about them is that they don't fade, smudge, and you can use them with any material even watercolor and they won't bleed.

dude you should totally steal those. theyre waaaay too expensive, especially for me the way i go through their 6 shades of grey. but yeah, theyre easy to steal and art stores generally have low security...

well yeah, theres the whole "its bad" thing,
but think about it this way... why should you have to pay for your own art? art supplies in general should be free, but companies jack up the prices waay too high for someone who really needs em. who wants to pay 2 bucks a pen when you need about 36 different colors, who wants to pay about 15-20 bucks a week on markers alone, and alot of the time its replacing the ones you use most often, youre not even getting anything new.
but really its just a suggestion, dont steal if you think its wrong, or if youre going to be stupid about it. but if you dont care about "morals" or whatever and you dont care about cheating some huge company out of a couple of bucks they planned to lose in their budget, go for it.

well some of the materials in some of these art supplies are really hard to get or find so thats why there so expensive. I mean i can't just steal gas because the people who find the gas want more money(though $4.13 a gallon is pretty crazy when a couple of days ago it was $4.02) you just can't cause you'll most likely get caught.

Out of curiosity, what settings do ye scan at? Everything I scan that has been colored with markers looks... like a bad jpeg. xD;
Very nice tutorial, by the way, it's been very helpful with cleaning up bleed. : D

Thanks for the tutorial. I hate bleeds and never knew how to fix them. I love tutorials. I've never colored w/markers until recently so thank you again. I'm a painter, when it comes to color.

hey, thanks for the tutorial, just one question, do you know where i can find copic markers? i've looked everywhere, and even though i have found them, there are so many different types, packs etc.
how many exactly should i get, could you please tell me, it would be a big help!
^^

I can't help you with where to get copic markers, as I got mine (and continue to get them) from an art store in Hong Kong. X3
As for shades, I'd suggest going with a few grays (most of all if you've never used markers before) as they're the best to practice with. Try Toner grey 03, 04 and 05.

*gets her gel pens at Wal*Mart* xD I dunno why people think they're so hard to find.
Any office supply or department store carries them. Even in white.
I don't use markers because.... Well, I suck at coloring in general, and markers are difficult to keep the same color consistently for me. But every time I see your work I do consider taking it up... just to try xD
Very nice tutorial!

You know, a white-out pen works almost as well as a gel-pen.

KeyshaKitty In reply to tspeecestudios [2007-03-12 08:52:39 +0000 UTC]
That depends. I find them thick, clumpy and annoying - plus, the white-out is too thick whereas the gel pen is much nicer and thiner. X3

This is a GOD SEND as I've started to take my markers more seriously and have discovered that markers aren't as lineart friendly as colored pencils are. This will save me many hours of screaming and rage.
