Description NO PHOTOSHOP NEEDED!

Hopefully people who use markers may find this of some help. It takes practice to get markers to work well in your favour, although even the best of us will get marker ink bleeding over our inking lines a little.

I put this tutorial together to show you how I tidy up minor bleeds in my marker peices without taking it into photoshop. True, you can use a computer program to tidy up the scan but...I happen to like the original to look nice and clean as well, and want to rely on the computer as little as possible (some people don't even have programs like photoshop, which makes things even harder for them).

PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE ASKING ME ABOUT THE GEL PEN: I REALLY can't help you out on where to buy them, as I don't live in America/UK/Australia ect, and I don't know of online sites either. All I can tell you is that I like to use the brand of Gel Pen called 'Hybrid', if you want to use that kind, you need to research where to find it yourself. :3

EDIT: The webpage changed their layout, in any case, there are some white gel pens that can be bought here: [link]

Control freak that I am, it's reasons like this that I never developed any talent with markers.

It's good to see that there are ways to fix it... maybe I should give it a shot some time

*huggle * I did have one question thats slightly off topic x3;; but what color do you use as base skin tone? I have many skin tone markers but I never know, it looks like you start light and then go dark deshou?~

Not really sure. It's a Tria Marker and I don't know the pantone system off by heart, so I can't give you the number.

<33 hehe , no worries I enjoyed the tutorial. Ranko is one of my all time favorite characters and you drew her so cute. I will try this technique some day

Well, this technically doesn't tell you to fix the bleeds, just cover them up with darker colors and thicker lines.

It's just common sense, nothing to make a tutorial about. But I suppose that if there were people who couldn't even use that, then at least they might benefit from it.

You, however, should look into improving your coloring skills. For example, the shading on the face doesn't align with the bone structure, and the head is way too big for the body.

KeyshaKitty In reply to Serain [2007-03-10 09:18:11 +0000 UTC]

True, it doesn't 'fix' them, like you said - it covers them up. But there were people asking me how I didn't go outside the lines and so I figured I'd show them how I did it. ^^

Thanks for the crit, too. Always appriciated. :3

That does help. I used to use Hybrids also when all I used on my art were gel pens. Now I have progressed to prismamarkers and rarely use gelpens anymore. Instead of using the white hybrid gel pen I now use a pentel white paint pen. I also got a sliver one but I foudn that a silver sharpe works just as well. I wish prisma would make a white marker but I guess that is just me.

That's a really neat tutorial, on a topic I've never seen discussed, too!

Hmm, I use the ink-over method too, but I never thought about using highlights for that advantage. Thanks!

Work from light to dark, like in painting?! I would have only been left to assume this, if only I could move on to using colors.

Awesome tutorial! It was very nice and I must definitely fave it! I haven't worked with markers much (I really wanna get some nice ones and do more work with them - I like pencils and such but markers just look sooooooo fun 8333 eee!) And I tend to do a lot of mistakes of bleeding over lines D;

Thank you so much on your information about using the white gel pen (I was staring at your comics for the longest time, wondering, "How in the world does she DO that!?").

You are a hero to the three of us still left on deviantart who are Photoshop-less.

XD Actually, I have photoshop. I just only use it for prepping stuff for online or adding text to my comics - but I don't colour or alter my traditional art with it. :3

I totally agree SS, Keysha-chan is a monumental help to those true traditional artists that have never even logged on to photoshop... much less know how to use it!

I often find in America at a Michaels craft store, also the local Hobby Lobby said that they will start caring them aswell since they have started selling Copics Markers. (now if only they would start selling tone)

How funny, I never knew that white gel pens were specifically used to fix things.
Ive always used gel pens to add special touches (the glitter kind are awesome) and have been using white gel pens for so long to touch up errors. The only problem is often the act like white out and you cant mark back over them very well..

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KeyshaKitty In reply to NatashaVi [2007-03-09 23:47:00 +0000 UTC]

Actually, Gel pens are really made for highlights and such, but I found them useful for fixing mistakes too.

And as for the white-out, I simply let it dry and then I can go back over them again. X3

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NatashaVi In reply to KeyshaKitty [2007-03-10 04:20:53 +0000 UTC]

Prismacolors are not concentrated enough to go over the white gel pen with color to equal the same color as around the white spot, thats the problem. You use copics though, do though totally cover the white?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KeyshaKitty In reply to NatashaVi [2007-03-10 04:28:47 +0000 UTC]

Ah, that's what you mean. XD This tutorial isn't designed to go over white gel pen, though - the gel pen is added over the top to cover up small bleeds - it's used to 'finish' a picture, not to cover up a mistake that you can go over again in marker.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NatashaVi In reply to KeyshaKitty [2007-03-10 06:42:19 +0000 UTC]

Gotcha. It just looked like there were some bleeds IN the picture that you fixed =]
Thanks for the setting straight.
