Description
NO PHOTOSHOP NEEDED!Hopefully people who use markers may find this of some help. It takes practice to get markers to work well in your favour, although even the best of us will get marker ink bleeding over our inking lines a little.
I put this tutorial together to show you how I tidy up minor bleeds in my marker peices without taking it into photoshop. True, you can use a computer program to tidy up the scan but...I happen to like the original to look nice and clean as well, and want to rely on the computer as little as possible (some people don't even have programs like photoshop, which makes things even harder for them).
PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE ASKING ME ABOUT THE GEL PEN: I REALLY can't help you out on where to buy them, as I don't live in America/UK/Australia ect, and I don't know of online sites either. All I can tell you is that I like to use the brand of Gel Pen called 'Hybrid', if you want to use that kind, you need to research where to find it yourself. :3
EDIT: The webpage changed their layout, in any case, there are some white gel pens that can be bought here: [link]

My friend loves using markers, and I can't for that bleed effect (i'm so bad at it), but THANK YOU for making this!! I love how you don't use photoshop. I thought you did at first (until I saw the process you did in your art). You are very talented.
Thanks again! ;D

Wow, it's amazing how you colour your work... I should maybe try it one time, 'cause I don't have Photoshop, and my pencil crayons just don't look good. Thanks a lot for the tutorial! It'll probably help if I start colouring with markers! Well... I still need to get the markers for it...

That's really spiff! Do you think that copics are better than prismas for this kind of art? Because using the two, I have actually liked prismas better. What aspect of copics make you use them other than anything else?
XD I just use white out for highlights. lawl

Prisma are my least fave out of all 4 brands of markers that I use. I rate Copic and Tria the top on my list easily (plus, refilling them saves a TON of money, unlike Prisma which require you to keep buying more markers...what a waste. XO).

Hm, that is true, but for some reason I really like the way that prismas blend. I dunno, I haven't been using either for too long, and I haven't used anything but Copics and Prismas as of yet, because I never hear a lot about the others, but well...
Also, you can't find Copics where I live, only prismas and those are limited. XD I do want to try the others though...

Just a quick note:
You can find Gel-Pens in Wal-mart, for the US and Canada, and K-Mart in the states. Just go to a store that sells virtually everything, and you can probably find them.

I find this really helpful! Most helpful tutorial you've done so far X3 I have markers too and tried practicing marker coloring, but what bothers me is that the way I stroke my markers. Everytime I overlap a stroke on a colored surface (which doesn't need to be shaded) the color gets darker even though you don't want to, which destroys the image D:
tell me in short, how you stroke your markers :3 you can't escape, I'll try asking >XD

KeyshaKitty In reply to imp24 [2007-03-09 11:16:18 +0000 UTC]
I work really fast with my base layers - moving the marker while the ink is still wet. If it dries up and you brush over it, it'll add another 'layer' and thus get darker. The trick is to work fast with wet marker ink.

nice tut, Kai! marker bleeds can be such a hassle, but we seem to come from the same school of thought: I HATE having a messy pic and then cleaning it up in Photoshop. not even altering the color...it feels so wrong ;-; I want to enjoy pics in person as much I enjoy them on the computer.
but enough about that. so true, gel pens, darker colors, and ink pens are a life-saver!
oh and one more question: CAN U LYKE DO A MERKER TOOTOORIEL COS I WANA LEARN HOW 2 DO TEH MAERKERS DO 1 NOWPLZTHX

Sorry, the actual 'how to use marker' kind of tutorial I refuse to do. I'd actually suggest to people to experiment themselves - that's how i learned, by observing previous marker pieces by artists and trying things myself...learning to pick-apart images and techniques and, from what I can tell, my fave marker artists on DA have done exactly the same.
besides, there's a million 'how to use markers' tutorials out there already. X3
