Description PLEASE NOTE: I will NOT answer questions asking me what stores/online stores to buy art supplies from. As I've stated hundereds of times over, I live in New Zealand. NOT America, England, what-ever-land ect - and thus I'd have no clue. My art supplies I either buy in New Zealand, Hong Kong when I visit, or my friends overseas send them to me.

Besides, there's a program called google if you want to find an online art store. Because I don't buy stuff online, I wouldn't have a clue where you could look. sorry.

Anyhow, message aside, I'm taking a page out of the books and making one of these like *Marit and *Wennichelle but darn...I use so much different stuff, I had to make this tutorial in two-parts. The one with markers and pencils will come sometime in the future (but may be a long time yet with the stuff I've got to do).

Hope this helps a little, in any case.

what do you do about smering?

Don't have an issue with smearing.

Sakura Microns and Sakura Ink pens don't tend to bleed on certain paper. On normal white printer paper, yes, they can bleed, but only if you leave them on the paper too long. The trick that I use, is to make the strokes simple and thin with an 0.5 micron, then go over lightly with a 1 sakura ink pen. Worked nicely for me, anyways.

KeyshaKitty In reply to DJ-Sai [2006-12-24 16:29:13 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I'm not talking about actual 'on paper' bleeding. Bleeding can mean two different things. I'm talking about when the ink actually leaks out of the pen itself.

I see your point about using your trick, but really - why bother when I have the mitsubishi and copic pens that don't require all that extra work and produce far superior results. I put them in the list to show I use them, but to point out that (in my opinion) Sakura Microns just aren't that great in comparison to others that I use.

They bleed out of the pen? Hm. Gravity must not have any effect where I live then. But I see your point. But, for some of us, -cough, ontario, cough- we can't get our hands on any copic inks or anything -good-. D: But I see your point.

i can relate to your frustration when people ask you questions like that
i livein aus and im so damn sick of people responding to answers to their questions with "theres no such brand" or "i cant find it why cant i find it where can i get it?!"
i swear lots of people dont seam to realise that their country isnt the only one in existence

It's usually ALWAYS people in the US! I want to tear my hair out in frustration and yell that there ARE other countries outside of that corner of the globe. XO

And sadly, the 90% or so people in America who fail to realize there are other countries or whatnot make the rest of us look bad. DX

yeah its true
i have relatives in america aswell as friends from there and theyre all very intelligent but its hard to remember that when you hear about the latest stupid american shooting someone coz they were up a tree or because they thought their gun was a taser or a combo of both
intelligent americans have it rough
not only are they surrounded by idiots constantly but whenever theyre with intelligent people half the time those people think theyre stupid just coz theyre american

X3; I don't mind how microns work XD! I actually like the tendency for older .005 pen tips to get weird because I can do some really cool effects with the warped tip ^_^;;

OMG!!! I'm not alone! I love gouache~! XD! I haven't used it in a long time, but ah well I'm thinking of it on a piece I'm working on, on a sheet of illustration board <3 That kind of board is fun to use, but don't get it too wet. It will warp like any so when I do use gouache on it, I use it pretty straight without much water to it. Try colored pencil on matte board sometime =3 Matte board is very moisture sensitive and you have to use a color less blender to full things in, but the results are so smooth~

Just a comment aimed at those in the U.S. (specifically the North east):

Michael's is an excellent all around art supply store. They have everything (and I do mean everything). I've seen pretty much all of the things listed above there. Some of their stuff can be a bit pricey, but in general, it's reasonable. Occasionally, you can hit a sale, and you're all set.

Personally, I usually get stuck buying all of my art supplies on campus. ($3+ a pop for a Sakura micron. :sob: )

I live in the UK, so most of the time I go to WHSmith (I have loads of sketchbooks from it etc) and buy all media in OwenClark, the art shop.

Anyway thanks for the tutorial, it was interesting to read!

PS: My mechanical pencil is better than yours, because it is thinner and easier to hold.
Hehe, don't take it seriously..

KeyshaKitty In reply to Nadyushka [2006-12-24 16:32:28 +0000 UTC]

Psh, shut yer mouth! My pencil is WONDERFUl to hold. Lovely flexi-grip and everything. Besides, some people's hands can't take too well to holding thinner things - I prefer thicker pencils, markers ect.

I use that Canson paper, too! It's pretty darn good. ^^

WoW Kewl, so you use paint....your work looks like its been done by photoshop. WOW im really impressed, my painting work is rather poor when it comes to blending

I have those Inking Pens (Drawing Pens) they're really good ^^

Actually, you need to read it closer (as in, the media list at the bottom of each image). I use markers as my main colours - paint is something I do for some illustrations.

Ah! Very useful I was wondering what kind of paper you used for markers ^^ And I like how you say where you bought things, coz I can take a rough guess that if you can get it in NZ you can probably get it over here too :3

Not to mention it's always interesting to see what other artists use ^.^

And yes, clicky pencils are awesome, I use one too! Though it's just a cheap one I bought at uni for like, 80c XD

Is it Paper Plus? XD

KeyshaKitty In reply to LemoTheLemon [2006-12-24 16:36:25 +0000 UTC]

Most of my stuff I get from either Warehouse Stationary, Whitcolls and (for markers and a few other lil' bits) the art supply store: 'Gordin Harris' - they have a couple of shops in Auckland, but I only know one of them's in New Market. Check the yellow Pages for their location.

It's always nice to see what other people uses for when they're drawing, especially when they use a lot of variating materials like you do. If nothing else, one might get inspired

Thanks for putting it up and happy holidays ^^

I didn't realise you were a NZer.. I'm an aussie myself. Are some of your supplies (ie prisma pencils) hard for you to find? I know the tin I got was a fluke of a find.
