Description
My first tutorial, created on a whim because ~toxic-paradise asked me how I made the blinky eye. A three-hour whim XD I need to get a life.Careful, it's huge.
Anyway, first tutorial, if something's confusing please ask.
Tutorial is about the GIMP; I don't think it'd work with other programs, sorry. It might, you never know. I certainly don't.
Blinky eye found here [link]
EDIT: Okay, so the main question I'm running into is about the transparencies. Basically, the way the animation works in GIMP is that it stacks the layers on top of one another. It doesn't swap one out for another. So if you have transparencies, you're going to see the lower layers behind them.
Another thing: When you hit "Optomize" (Why, no, I can't spell, how did you guess?) what happens is that GIMP takes your GIF and turns everything that's repeated into transparencies. So say you have a blue background with a little stick figure dancing on it. You would probably put the blue background on every frame. GIMP would then replace the background with transparencies eveywhere that it didn't change.
That doesn't make sense. Um... it makes your filesize a lot smaller, and it therefore good.

You'd just put one frame on each layer. Copy-paste 'em into one file.

Yeah, thanks, I actully figured that out after I asked you, I just had to actually try to think instead of relying on people to tell me what to do. That's the problem with me, too lazy. Thanks for getting back to me though.

Did you save it as a .GIF filename? It should play when you're looking at it in any regular view, like a web browser or the Window's Picture Viewer. Try right-clicking on the icon, and go to Open With, and pick the Window's Picture and Fax Viewer. (Or something similar, I suppose.)

thank you so much!! only i'm having a little problem, my animation is just stacking up on the previous frames... is this b/c it has a transparent background??

Kieti In reply to graffika [2007-05-17 02:16:57 +0000 UTC]
That's how the animation works, as far as I can tell - it doesn't switch one out for another, it stacks them on top. So if you have transparencies, you're gonna see the lower layers. Does that help explain it?

this is a great tutorial.. really easy to use and very clean. but i was wondering, i have a problem..
say i am doing a square, and then the second layer is a circle. i do this, and animate it.
but instead of flashing circle then square, circle then square..
the circle is still there in second flash, so it;s like circle, then sqaure on top of circle.
sorry if this is confusing...

You mean that you can see through the transparencies in a layer? That's because GIMP doesn't switch one layer for another, it piles them on top of one another. To tell you the truth, I haven't figured out how to fix that. I just filled in the transparencies, like in my avatar. But I can't really help ;-; Sowwy.
