Thank you very much for making this tutorial!
I've always had problems with paneling and narrative, but I wasn't finding any book that explained more than the most basics, so this will be great help

Exactly why I created it. People kept saying things like, "Your friends without art degrees will tell you." And "You will just know." and "Uhh... sizing of the panels." which sounds like magic elves speak.

Thank you! I am not a manga artist, but I got a critique pointing out my paneling issues and your tutorial was a big help in showing me how to fix things.

Thank you very much for this tutorial.
I've always wanted to draw stories, but the paneling was never the way I wanted it to look.
Reading this tutorial and remembering the most important pointers, really made it a lot less daunting.
It was also quite interesting to read about positive negative space in typography. People always tend to talk about the images and leave out the text.

PS: I laughed a few times at some of the lines you put in. Great use of humor~

Thanks for reading the tutorial! I pretty much put in everything I had questions about before taking graphic design classes and what the manga forums seemed to be lost on teaching... "Have your friends check it..." "Check for what?" "I don't know..." Also used a little of my UX training from web design...

This is a good... no, an awesome start!

There are many things that seem subtle to me, but maybe that's because the topic is just too big XD
I'll read more and make more panels then I'll come back here. Things will make more sense that way.

Anyway, thank you very much for this tutorial *bows*

"read a bunch of manga with the techniques mentioned instead of reading the stories"
this is hard TTATT, I subconsciously read the story instead... great pointer XD

I understand, I always want to flip the table in front of those who said something like "just feel it and you will understand" =w=;;

Thank you for the comment.

If you read 1-10 and then look at the accompanying critique+ I think read a bunch of manga with the techniques mentioned instead of reading the stories it will give you a feel for it and when it's used by different artists.

I think it's better than telling people to just "feel" it out and give it to clueless friends... ;

If you want to go beyond that a basic design class+ a typography class will help you tons.

Nice use of panel grouping and zooming effects.

Thank you. I made this tutorial because I couldn't find a tutorial to teach me how to do it, so I studied and then needed to write down how to do it... ; Also because people were always saying, "Ask your friends" "It's magic." (or sounds like "Ask your happy manga elves." "Feel the force of the panels, Young Mangaka Warrior." ) I got sick of that... (I was sick with a 101 degree fever, going to a manga panel, asking that... I asked at manga creation forums... all the same answer... didn't cut it for me. Read over 100 manga and took design class, then got the answer.)

Inking, no....

I'm working on learning how to do toning in the same methodology. I've only found one rule: Tone is not a literal representation of color.
The only other rule I know is, "Limit what tones you use." Which varies on genre... but there are subtleties to value I still need to learn.

; Kabocha-chan is better at inking than I am.

I appreciate the thought and all the information you gathered together. I recently started paneling out my pages for my web comic and I've been having some issues. I want to do it right and not get into any lazy habits. Your tutorial has already helped and I'm sure I'll be referring back to it.

How does this series not have more faves...? Great work, really thorough and in depth, and you know your stuff as well as how to present it to aspiring mangakas. At first I was daunted by the amount of text, but once I started reading, I realized how much information you were giving, and was immediately drawn in.

Excellent presentation and super helpful - thank you.

Seriously that's the best tutorial on manga around.
If weren't you I would never learn about those things. It even teachs typo!
And I'm going to professional manga. But I never knew a bunch of things I found here.
You truly helped.

Thank you. You can get better detail about this in design classes... which I encourage you to take if you're serious about this profession. I know that many comic book artists can certainly benefit from it. (especially on proportions).

Read all 10 of these and I must say they are very insightful. Loaded with lots of information and many other things that are very useful. Really makes you think more about overall flow and design and everything. Been doing comic for years but have noticed my paneling was definitly not utilizing what it could do. I will try to apply what I learned here more often. And I catch myself rereading certain parts to make sure I understand it better. Thanks a lot for making this tutorial

I think this'll help me some, but it seems like too much to understand and remember by just reading through it once. So I'll probably re-read it in the future.
I don't remember ever thinking about pages being paired before, except the two-page spreads (which doesn't really count), and I looked at a graphic novel I have so that I'd see if it was true (although most pages don't line up, a few of them did). I also had been starting scenes at the beginning of pages and ending them at the end of pages, which I think I'll think more about in the future. But, when I tried looking at two different mangas to see how the scenes were done, a lot of times they did end a scene with the end of a page. So, I guess it depends on how much suspense there is or something.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KinnoHitsuji In reply to AsjJohnson [2011-07-12 04:16:35 +0000 UTC]

There are no plurals in Japanese. When I look at two different sheep. When I look at two different manga. The plural works like that. Dear, the plurals in Japanese work like deer. (Korean and Chinese, too incidentally.)

The "Don't end the scene on the same page" I took from How to Draw Manga and Emura. As said, read from the beginning and build it up. The tutorial breeds knowledge from psychology and design theory, which are being currently studied in universities, etc for web applications.

This tutorial is better at diagnosing what issues there are and what to think about step by step. Skipping around won't help you since I purposefully broke it down and then built upwards.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AsjJohnson In reply to KinnoHitsuji [2011-07-12 04:30:21 +0000 UTC]

I should know that about plurals, but it's hard to word things that way.
I did start with part one and went through them, and understand most of it, but I know I'd get more out of it while actually trying to do something related.

I- I don't get it, why would people want to use templates D:

Awesome tutorial, hope you can find the time to finish it up.

KinnoHitsuji In reply to TheraHedwig [2011-07-11 16:26:15 +0000 UTC]

Thank you

Most people would want to use templates because they don't know how to divide space according to the psychology of the story, but the 10 tutorials should have defeated that for you. ^_^

I only have tutorial 9 to insert pictures for. But it takes a while to summon enough manga examples and then roughly copy them for the examples. Always drives me nuts.
