Description This was intended to be a long panning background - you'd start at the left, then whip to where Verdauga has his sword up, then whip across the arrows to Barkstripe's beleaguered forces.

The project was stopped out of respect for the folks who own the rights to the Redwall series. We asked if they'd be OK with us doing a large fan project based on their intellectual property, and they (eventually) replied that they'd prefer we didn't. So that's that, I'm afraid.

I love your work! Verdauga looks just as I imagined him, and the expressions are all wonderful.

Awesome work, my friend.

I have a question, though: how do you view Verdauga's character?

I view him as an ambitious general who just wanted a place to carve out for his own. In his travels, he discovered Kotir and fell in love with the castle and the area. The abundance of woodlander residents to help support his troops was fortuitous as well. He saw the pathetic woodlander rebellion as a sign that his leadership was really the best thing for them.

In his old age, he has grown in wisdom, some might say a little soft. Conflict doesn't thrill him the way it used to, his body is tired and sore. He is content to merely tax his subjects, raising his hand only to subdue dangerous rabblerousers. Tsarmina has been exercising some control over the guard as of late, pushing them to be crueller than usual to let Kotir live more comfortably. This has backfired by driving a large portion of woodlanders out of the settlement, which means that Kotir is now hurting for food and has to tax even more heavily just to survive. Which is where we come into the story.

So, would that make him a "bad" antagonist, a "good" antagonist, or something else entirely?

Well, Brian Jacques tended to keep the Redwall series on a pretty clear-cut binary: the heroes were good, and the villains were bad. Vermin weren't evil because they were born weasels or rats or whatever, they were cast as weasels and rats because they were evil.

But some characters are a bit grayer than that. Verdauga is a baddie because he does continue to hold his position of power over the woodlanders, but he's a lighter shade of black than, for instance, Slagar or Cluny. Of course, we never got to see Cluny or Slagar get what they want and grow old with the power they craved, so who can tell?

Verdauga does stand out as likeable to me just because he is willing to show mercy. He won't just set Martin free because that undermines his laws, but he sees no reason to solve the problem by killing Martin, either. He's not exactly "noble," but he's more interesting than a lot of other Redwall villains.

You can tell because I can go on forever about it. X)

Yeah, my friend, I can tell. Most likely because my opinion is nearly identical to yours. XD
The reason I ask is because someone brought up the stark symbolism of good and evil in Redwall, and I wanted the opinion of a third Redwall fan on Verdauga. ^^

... Also, I highly doubt that either Slagar or Cluny would ever go grey. Ever. XD

So I guess, in short: He's still a baddie, but I really love the old Verdauga we see because he is levelheaded and seems to maintain a sense of honor. :3

Nope, it's OpenCanvas. Which probably has a lot in common, as it's very simple. I like it because it's less resource-intensive than Photoshop, which makes for less laggy sketching. I also like how it handles pressure sensitivity. c:
