Description 900KB image, beware!

Here's part two of the tutorial. It's nearly twice as long (pixel-wise) as the first. Hope it helps!

I'm also compiling a list as things come to mind. There may be enough for a part 4 covering some miscellany. We'll see when I get there. :d

This is really great. Thank you very much for this guide.
I read some comments bellow and you talked about not having free time for a Part 3, but really, in case it is possible, having a Part 3 would be great. Anyway, Parts 1 and 2 have already provided much much knowledge. Again, thank you very much!

Not sure if there is a part three yet, but thank you so much for the tutorials you have so far.

They're great help, and now I am looking more at realistic animals and practicing shapes of the body better than just drawing from the get-go.

Yeah, part three has kinda fallen by the wayside, since the project it was intended for ended prematurely. I should probably throw one together sometime (loose ends, aurgh), but now it's an issue of free time. Sorry about that.

Glad what is there has helped you out, though! c:

Do you know who is? Your work is really handy, since I aspire to draw like he does and with his Redwall paintings.

Please, whenever you have freetime! I'm looking foward to tutorial # 3.

that's actually the best setup i've seen for drawing anthros. it's simple in execution without being too cartoony. =3

I really appreciate this tutorial, and I'm recommending it to other people. The only question I have is if there ever was a part 3 as I didn't see it in your gallery.

Either way, thank you for the great resource!

Kobb In reply to celarania [2011-08-06 17:03:43 +0000 UTC]

There still isn't a part 3, unfortunately. My available time to work on the project dropped enough that I prioritized actually working on it over creating resources. I really would like to get to making it someday, though...

Thank you very much for the reply. I definitely understand how that goes. I did just want to let you know that I featured your tutorial at this lj community: [link]

Cool! This should really come in handy.
BTW, do you have any tips for drawing foxes?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kobb In reply to DarthCraftus [2011-05-25 21:41:25 +0000 UTC]

Generally, I'd just advise looking at pictures/videos of foxes and making your own observations about the shapes they seem to be made out of. Remember to think in 3D shapes like spheres, cylinders, cones, boxes, etc!

And a random, wordy observation: I consider the cheetah to be the most doglike of the cat family, as it resembles a greyhound and doesn't retract its claws, chasing prey for long stretches. Foxes, I feel, are the most catlike of the dog family. They have delicate facial features, they're more agile and light, and they tend to hunt the same way - stalking and pouncing. Some species climb trees. And interestingly, their pupils narrow to slits the way small cats' do.

Of course, they still very definitely canine, as cheetahs are still very feline. But I thought these little mannerisms were interesting and help make foxes unique. c:

I'm just wondering. If I were to use a shape for a Beaver would it be the same as a badgers?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kobb In reply to ZombieKitty3 [2011-05-07 18:32:33 +0000 UTC]

Well, take a look at some beavers and decide for yourself! There's really no right or wrong answer, so long as it looks like a beaver in the end. This tutorial is only meant to be a guide to get your brain thinking about the decisions you'll need to make.

Though off the top of my head, you'd probably need a solid shape. Beavers have sort of a squarish look to their heads, but being rodents they'd probably be a bit softer than a badger. If I were drawing it anyway. X)

I need to check dA more often, I'm missing all of everyone's art. I MISSED THIS, so hi i'm commenting

This is awesome, it's good design principles for a lot of things.

You make me want to read redwall and do fanart now |D It happens that I read a few books, then get distracted, then ignore it for a few months, then the internet reminds me again. There's not much new in the stories, but the world is still fun :>

Haha, thanks. (:

Last few Redwall books haven't been so hot, but the most recent one (The Sable Quean) was actually worth reading. Nice chapter illustrations, too.

When I saw this something clicked in my head and I began to doodle a bunch of shapes for characters. Heck on one of my oldest I experimente with shape that made her shorter and less skinny. Now I feel like I like this wierd chubby more rounded forms for her than the angular thing I was going for before. Now my characters are beggining to take on more life and difference after reading this. I knew shape could change things, but it takes a hit to the head like this to make it clearer. XD I'm looking forward ot the next one, as that's where I tend to have the most problems as well.
Thanks for doing this. =3
Man I need to read Mossflower again to remember how the characters were. I should check onthe project more often, been forgetting.

Amazing!... I need to remember that silhouete tip more often!
Only thing bothering is the old "mice are good, rats are bad" stereotype.

Kobb In reply to maria-mar [2010-07-11 02:11:11 +0000 UTC]

Well, that's Redwall for you. X)

I'm a fan of the "Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH" setup, myself.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

maria-mar In reply to Kobb [2010-07-11 02:49:07 +0000 UTC]

Not all rats were mean on Mrs Frisby and the Rats of NIMH... it's really hard for me to see that as a stereotype when i just have my pet rat on my shoulder as i'm typing xD

It's like the idea that wolves are solitary animals that eat people alive... Little Riding Hood completely ruined it for the poor, fascinating animals.

Kobb In reply to maria-mar [2010-07-11 09:37:39 +0000 UTC]

Well yeah, that's my point. In fact, in the book there really wasn't a "bad" rat at all - Jenner and his rats disagreed with the main group, but left peacefully.

Regardless, rats have awesome shapes, whether you cast them as hero or villain.

Aaaaa this is brilliant! These are all very useful things to keep in mind, not only with the redwall characters that this tut focused on, but for character design in general. Pay attention to design-- a lesson to be learned no matter the subject!

Aww, why does it seem like some of my artwork was referenced in this? Either that, or I just have a big ego... or both.

But thanks for uploading this, this was loads of help, and now it all seems so much for fun! Lots more work, of course, but still more fun.

Also, I LOVE KUNG FU PANDA!

I love you're drawing of Verdauga, he's looks like he was once very strong and athletic, a good bloke, but he's getting old and sickly, as he was in the book.
Brilliant stuff.

this is just excellent! I'm surprised how much I see here mirrors a lot of what I've learned and collected over the years of drawing animal characters. Actually it shouldn't be much of a surprise because I've learned a lot from your own work.

Kobb In reply to mushyZ [2010-06-28 17:42:06 +0000 UTC]

There certainly aren't any secrets to it! c:

But that's why I like to pick up different "how to draw" books - sometimes there's little tidbits of information I *knew* already, but as I read it I finally "get" it. Even if the book was originally meant for the under-10 set. X)
