Description Large file, beware!

This is the first character design tutorial (of three) I'm doing for the Mossflower movie project, in hopes that our designers will think a little more outside the style of the Nelvana series when creating our characters.

This part comprises the very basics and is supplemented by this list of Very Useful Links:

REQUIRED READING:

These, in no particular order, are some nice short idea tidbits that make good food for thought, and the presentation is really clear.

EDIT: Another useful link, for those of you that have some free time.

This is a lecture given by Chen-Yi Chang, who was the principal character designer on Mulan. As I've done here, he covers the bases, but he has a lot more chance to elaborate. He's also a professional. It's pretty good stuff. (He really gets into it at about the 27 minute mark)

Great tutorial! I love the simplistic explanations and the way you've pointed out the biggest ideas of cartoons in an easy to remember and outsider/beginner friendly way. The shape differences you mentioned are a great way to really make stylized work come to life, too!

Thank you for this tutorial, it is very helpful! I'm trying to learn cartoony drawings since I've done too much anime/realistic.

That's the plan. It's a fan project, so nothing theatrical or official. I'm still hoping there will be an official Redwall movie of some kind one day, though. c:

That's a very bold project. I personally did not at all like the look of any of the Nelvana design or styling and I wish you guys the best of luck in coming up with something much better! This is an excellent start.

Personally I liked how Nelvana animated everything. That's pretty much why my designs look like them so much. But I'll try to be more 'unique' and such.

I'm so glad you're not copying the cartoons, I still remember seeing the designs for the first time after being hyped up for ages after hearing about the series and being disappointed that they looked nothing like how I'd imagined. It didn't stop me renting out the one video the library had though as it was the only way I could watch some of it

Can't wait to see more of your Mossflower drawings, it's my favourite book and you do my favourite Redwall art so this is a good combination

Great tutorial ^^ definitely covers my worries as well, thanks so much for making this! Btw changed my mind on the storyboard templates yours will be fine, besides I doubt Dope sheet and sequencing notes would be useful to most anyway =b I really found the contrasting line bit very useful, I've always known something like that out of instinct but it is nice to actually have what I was thinking in writing with pictures to boot Thanks again!

Well, some documentation is really useful on boards. I'll probably put together a quick tutorial for the story artists too - on the basics of boarding, how to label your stuff, useful links, etc. Just so everyone is on the same page.

Kay awesome just keep it simple caus most of the storyboard artists obviously wont understand very technical jargon and I'd avoid any mention of Dope sheets as I doubt even the animators will be using them, at least for now until I can see a good reason to use them.

Kobb In reply to BrevityRaccoon [2010-06-28 18:36:11 +0000 UTC]

I dunno, dope sheets are actually very good to use. Perhaps a tiny bit less useful given that Flash essentially has a built-in dope sheet as the timeline, but the basics of using it are kinda crucial to getting good stuff.

BrevityRaccoon In reply to Kobb [2010-06-28 20:38:26 +0000 UTC]

I'm sure I responded to this (apologies if you get a double post) Just figured as you said with the timeline being there that using Dope sheets may bring more confusion and work than is necessary and working on our own shots doesn't require the "paper-passing" of tradition animation that you'd usually require them for. I mean please correct me if I'm missing something crucial here but what are your thoughts?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kobb In reply to BrevityRaccoon [2010-06-29 03:28:18 +0000 UTC]

Well, I guess I meant we could cover what dope sheets are *for* and how to adapt that to the Flash timeline. Sorry for being confusing, there.

So, kind of a "here's how the dope sheet has been used traditionally - now, here's how we adapt this use to the existing tools in Flash" sort of FYI, for the animation team.

Wow, as a former Redwall fantard I think this is one awesome project!
The Redwall cartoon incarnation just sucked big time. I'm curious what your version will look like

Kobb In reply to Alopochen [2010-06-28 11:03:06 +0000 UTC]

So am I! X)

I only have the barest of free time to dedicate to the project and thus didn't try to get my foot into the offical designing circle. However, I thought I'd help as much as I could. Nothing worse than wasted potential!

It's Redwall, therefore it's epic. :3

Of course, that is not to discount the fact that this design tutorial is both concise and informative. Excellent work, my friend.
