I'd really like to use a rotary cutter and grid, I just don't have them - yet *saves some money for them* I just figured for the sake of the tutorial though, most people would have easier access to scissors and a ruler.

Ah ok, the rotary cutter I got wasn't that expensive, i got it at a michaels store for about $5, and depending on the mat you get they don't tend to be more than $20. I don't know if that applies to all Michaels or just the one in my area though.

I've been making kanzashi on and off for a little while now- are there any particular brands of dye you recommend? RIT is the easiest for me to get, but it sucks pretty hard x_x

Heh heh, actually I just use coloured craft inks. I go for the ones that are fade proof and India Ink based. When India ink dries, you can't remove it. Usually I wet the fabric a bit and then drip the ink on with a medicine dropper. The wet fabric allows it to bleed for those nice fades.

I'm about to place an order with machajp, but I can't for the life of me decide on ordering the chirimen or not. >_> Do you like using chirimen? I can't find Japanese lightweight cotton or silk anywhere! There's some habutae, but the color selection is limited. Where do you find your fabric? O_o
And this tutorial is ace. >:'D I'm so grateful that you did it - I can't wait to try it out. But I'm a little worried about making the flower's bases. ;_;

Thanks! I've never tried the chirimen that machajp offers. I've tried the habutae, though. It's very nice, but overly expensive. If search for habutae (habotai, or habbotai) on ebay you can get a full yard (square) for about the same price. Otherwise, you can pick up some of the polyester used for linings from your local fabric store. It works just as well and you have much more colour choice.

I was wondering, where you might buy the spray on starch? I tried out the potatoes the other day... >>; It worked okay but I was wanting to experiment with the spray on too!

Well, I get it from the grocery store. You can usually find it in the laundry and detergents section.

I am definitely going to try this one day! Sorry to ask, but what kind of glue do you use for the petals? I always have trouble with choosing the right glue for projects >_<

Kurokami-Kanzashi In reply to romanticiderazor [2008-01-30 09:28:12 +0000 UTC]
Thanks! Traditionally rice glue is used, but I dislike the fact that it takes a while to bond and that it only really works with very thin fabrics. I use hot glue instead. It bonds instantly, but it can be a bit messy.

if you don't have the spray and you want use the potato water, after you have put the fabric in the water, do you have to iron it or wait until it is dry?
thank you and wounderful tutorial!

Kurokami-Kanzashi In reply to Rasne [2007-12-17 04:16:57 +0000 UTC]
Thanks! I'd say iron it afterwards. It will just help it be nice and crisp and flat for when you measure your squares.

I briefly scanned over this tutorial; great tutorial btw and very helpful~ I'll be making using it very soon!
However I was curious --and if it was mentioned anywhere else I'm sorry for missing it- I've seen metal pieces on some kanazashi and I was wondering if there is anything you can tell me about those.

I've been working on some flowers in my free time.. I'm hoping to get something done, at least a piece or something, for a gathering of sorts on Sunday. Do you know how long it takes for that seller's shipping?

My sister wanted to wear kanazashi for her upcoming wedding, but has a very limited budget and found commercial kanazashi sites' prices discouraging.
Now she will be able to make her own, and have them for her wedding after all. Thank you very much for sharing!

This is very interesting to read! I find it deeply fascinating to see how you create these traditional works of textile art. ^^
And I en in awe of your patience! I would surely be screaming and jumping up and down with frustration after just six petals!!
Amazing!

Thanks! The more you practice, the easier it becomes. Also, I don't like to just sit and watch tv, I like to do something while I'm watching. So doing these with the tv on doesn't seem quite so meticulous.
