Description

The world famous Forth Bridge rumbles under the 105-ton weight of the 'A1' No. 60103 'Tornado' with a special train to mark the structure's 125th anniversary on 5th of July 2015.

'Tornado' is a Peppercorn class A1 but one with an extra sixty years of technology evolution [1948 to 2008], designed to the original designs by Arthur Peppercorn.

A project started in 1990 and built from 1994 to 2008. Tornado is the 50th Peppercorn locomotive, the original 49 were built in 1948 and 1949. The last one was withdrawn in 1966.

In 2017, 'Tornado' became the first steam locomotive to reach 100 miles per hour [161 kilometres an hour] on British tracks in fifty years.

Tornado is the first new build steam locomotive on British Rails since 'Evening Star' back in 1960.

Built by The A1 Steam Locomotive Trust.

If the original ones were built in 1948 and last withdrawn in 1966, that is an 18 year service life. For 'Tornado' to match that, being built in 2008, which will occur in 2026 (three years from now).

I own a model of this locomotive in 00 gauge form. 1:76
