Description

The bright Caledonian blue livery of McIntosh '439' 0-4-4T No. 419 positively glows against the golden trees that line the Bo'ness & Kinneil Railway at Todd's Mill on 9th November 2018.

CR No. 419 built at Glasgow in 1907, for branch line work. fast suburban and banking duties.

No. 419 is the spokes engine or flagship representative of the Scottish Railway Preservation Society. It has been a member of the society since 1964.

No. 419 is a member of the Caledonian Railway 439 Class, of which 92 members were made.

From 1914, No. 419 worked suburban out of Glasgow Central. A job it would do again in 1952. 1923, relocated south to Dumfries and Galloway to work light passenger jobs and banking duties.

When Caledonian Railway was involved in the merger in the formation of the Big Four, it became a part of the new LMSR [London, Midland and Scottish Railway] company.

No. 419's blue of Caledonia is replaced by black, and its number changed to 15189. In 1948, LMS was subsumed and became BR [British Railways].

When the lines it worked on in Edinburgh closed in 1951, it returned back to Glasgow, happily content working on empty carriage duties or on a loop line or the odd run north to Lanarkshire.

No. 55189, got some replacement part from sister locomotive, whom was on its way to the scrapheap.

In December 1962, as well as with two hundred locomotives she was sent off to scrap.

This is where the Scottish Railway Preservation Society stepped (or rolled) in to save this 0-4-4 tank engine. But costs were significant, and it was only a cash injection by a farmer whom also gave money to get the locomotive repainted into the previous Caledonian Railway blue livery. The Locomotive became a SRPS asset in March 1964. It was restored to full working order and did its first preservation services in 1971.

For the 1982/83 season, it worked at the Bluebell Railway for their century, before returning back home to Bo'ness after that close to a year stint in the south.

So you can see the little locomotive has had a pretty busy life.
