Description I was driving around Sunday evening and came across another Box Turtle crossing the road. This one is a little different than the first one I found([link] & [link] )...this one has red eyes and red on its scales, where the other one had yellow eyes and yellow on its scales. I had to be really patient with this series of pictures since I had to stop frequently to get out of the road for passing traffic. I'm sure I got many odd looks since I was laying on my stomach on the road!

Here's a link to another variation, without a fill flash and different white balance: [link]

Hope you enjoy!

This is just fantastic! You have this fantastic looking turtle at the front with that detailed stoney road and the paint leading the eye to the top of the frame, with a beautifully coloured sunrise/sunset? colouring the whole picture with a golden tone.

Very well deserved DD I like this a lot

oh my gosh, I tried to be...

The road was really hot since it had soaked up the days heat, so I was sweating and crawling around on my stomach, while trying to make sure I was not a traffic hazard.

nice. reminds me of that passage from john steinbeck's grapes of wrath where the turtle crossing the road and replanting a grain symbolising the migrants, you know?
especially nice is the colour on the sky, makes me wonder where the turtle is going.

Well, it's funny you mention The Grapes of Wrath...some scenes of that movie were filmed not too far from where I live. I've actually taken some pictures of the grain elevator that is located near the courthouse that is shown in the moive. Here's some links of those pics: [link] [link]

Wow, that's kinda sad that they have to cross over the road. I bet many get killed trying to cross

but he/she is so cute! must have been fun getting out and getting stared at I like it, nice lighting and colour tones

I actually had a turtle years ago, he looked alot like that one but with yellow eyes I think. He walked into our backyard and we took care of him for a while until he walked away and never came back...I live in the city and found it odd...actually they've been many odd creatures in my backyard, from huge crabs, to monkeys, to goats

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

kylewright In reply to FaMz [2009-03-23 13:39:33 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, these guys don't stand much of a chance unless people see them and avoid hitting them. Most of the road kill around here are skunks, armadillos, and raccoons.

It is weird how some animals can find their way in some of the most obscure areas that you never would imagine them being. From what I've been told, the turtle with the yellow eyes and yellow scales is a female box turtle.
