The Unmasked are formally called a subspecies of Kitvoren, but are actually not genetically related at all. Their creation was one more of magic and unexplainable science, caused by an entity from another dimension. Physically they don't differ much from the original Kitvoren aside from one or two features, but their origins could not be any more opposite.

An entity known as Blank is responsible for the creation of the Unmasked. According to a lucky contact with it, it wanted to make a "finished" version of Kitvoren, mostly just to see if it could (but also out of spite towards the Creators, to show them they failed even when they succeeded). As a result, Unmasked have no radiation in their bodies, but are more prone to developing 'magical' qualities and traits.

Like the name implies, the main difference between the Unmasked and standard Kitvoren is the face; Unmasked quite literally are missing their 'mask'. They have proper eyes and noses, and no skull-like material on their heads. They were called the Unmasked originally because when they first started appearing, people and Kitvoren alike thought they were Kitvoren who had somehow removed the skull material, revealing a much more natural animal face underneath. Obviously this is not the case.

Another subtle difference is that the Unmasked are venomous. Their bite can cause the wound to rot and the victim to fall into a coma in just a few days if left untreated. However, their saliva is an effective antidote if applied quickly enough. Otherwise medical attention should be sought out immediately.

Their heads and faces are still round and lacking muzzles, just like a normal Kitvoren. Instead of having a mouth that resembles a rat or dog, however, their lips and jaw give the Unmasked a grinning appearance.

Oddly enough, even though science is unsure of why Kitvoren have retractable spikes (and even Blank is unsure why they have retractable spikes), Blank still decided to keep them as a feature on the Unmasked.

Unlike Kitvoren, Unmasked can take on completely flawless human forms. They are able to carry features over to a humanoid form if they choose to but they don't have to (as is the case with Kitvoren). They can also take anthro forms. But because of this perfect transformation, Unmasked can't take on a halfling form.

Due to their lack of internal radiation, Unmasked don't have the same immunities as Kitvoren. They can't stray too far into radioactive areas, and are much more prone to illness and injury (though still more resilient than humans). To compensate for this, Blank seems to have given them longer-than-natural lifespans and a sort of "9 lives" system, though how it works has not been researched in depth.

Despite being created literally to one-up Kitvoren, the two species don't seem to have any problems with one another. There isn't any hatred for one species being inferior or superior, and they both face the same discrimination from humans. The Unmasked have the advantage of being radiation-free and being able to take a fully human form, but there is still societal unrest due to them being so similar to the original Kitvoren.
