Original photo found torn in half and digitally stitched back together. The identity of those pictured remains unknown.

It sure took them a long time to get to this point: 11 whole years of testing before they finally managed to create a creature that didn't spontaneously combust. They let it grow to full size in the tank before removing it just to be safe. But when they finally realized they'd had a breakthrough, they were ecstatic! Photos and hugs and even a small drink or two.

It's too bad they would suffer through stress, fear and torment over the next 23 years. The project they dedicated their lives to slowing and stalling, making them question what the point was of everything they did and if it was worth the cost of everything they left behind, only to die a horrible death and on top of all else, no one would even know their faces. All their accomplishments meaningless, their lives simply numbers in the history books, their purpose so unknown they might as well have not had one in the first place, and the monsters they created not even doing what they were created for, instead choosing peace (in most cases) over destruction.

Had they known they wouldn't even be remembered for their failure, maybe they wouldn't have thought the project was worth beginning.
