Next: Interlude I Cover
Previous:  Maelstrom 4x20
First: Maelstrom: Chapter One Cover

I'm expecting a lot of "I knew its" in the comments xD

DUN DUN DUNNNNN!!!!  I've been sitting on this secret for TWO AND A HALF YEARS, so it's a relief to finally get it out!

This also takes place chronologically between chapters one and two, and explains why Trenton was so moody here .  I think it's safe to say that Mystery Lady is in fact Elsie from page one .  We'll finally be meeting Ivo and the other Mr. Big Bad next week in the Epilogue/Interlude for Volume One!  Volume Two will be looking into the Maverick family's crazy dynamic and the reason for the father/daughter estrangement. We'll also find out what Pesky Percy has been doing while his fiancee ran away to become a cook on a smuggling airship.  Fun stuff!   I'm going to have to go on a small hiatus so I can actually script/thumbnail/work on the Volume 2 pages since I have the outlines done but nothing else.   In the meantime, I'm thinking of doing two things:

1) Weekly Q&A comics with the Maelstrom cast!  I'll either submit a deviation or a journal where you can ask questions and I'll post a response comic on Mondays and Fridays.

2) I'm considering putting together a contest to celebrate the completion of Volume 1!  If there's enough interest, I'll go ahead and start working on it.

The toils of finding out about the child you had that you never knew existed is added to Trenton's list of Least Favorite Surprises!

Oh my gosh!!! I new it! This only spells trouble down the road. I don't think Trenton will like what Mumsy wants to do with Hester, putting her in the school and all.

What an awesome page! The lighting and everything is just great. Next week we meet some big baddies? Oh my, this is going to get bad real quick!

Weeeell, the idea to put Hester in the Academy was something of a joint decision...

Thank you!  If I can finish up some other things I need to work on, hopefully I can update next week!  I'll be returning to Friday updates so it'll give me some time to work on pages.

Oh really? Hmmm. I hope Hester goes along with it!

That will be awesome! Really looking forward to what's coming!

OMG I LOVE THIS TWIST!!!!!

I mean, I kind of guessed something along these lines (but not quite)...but I am super excited about the kinds of character dynamics this will unlock!!

I also just kind of love everything about this page. (Trenton looks fiiine in a top hat, lol~)
But I have to say I don't really trust Mumsy. >.>

I might not have been too subtle about it, but it's my favorite twist so far and opens up a lot of doors for me artwise now!

Trenton cleans up nice.   DON'T TRUST ELSIE.  She used to be (sort of innocent) when she was younger--we'll get to see a little snippet of her and Trenton in their early years in Volume 2...

Yup.... oh boy....I wonder were we'll go from here. The plot continually thickens; this has got to be a shock to Hester! (I LUUUUUUUUUV how Mumsy is just in the background, kinda blurred by the light... it really helps show us how Hester is seeing this.)

I dare say, I like the sound of both the options ya listed! It would kind of keep us distracted with Maelstrom themed stuff. XD

Thank you!  I wanted to include Elsie in there because she's been such a key player in this chapter--having her in the bright light was an afterthought I'm glad I got around to including!

lol That's the plan!  I'm hoping to start updating again sometime this summer, depending on how fast I can script/thumbnail Volume 2.

I sincerely did NOT expect that. I was expecting her introducing him and that's that. I know you've drawn them together a lot, but that could of easily been a step father/typical father "figure" in her life, but did not expect biological father LOL.

A contest sounds nice to me!

SURPRISEEEE

Funny thing is, what you thought was originally how their characters were written until mid-2016 when I got the idea to make them related.   Hester was an orphan in the draft before the current canon script/story that Trenton adopted later on.

I'm all for awesome step parents (biased from my own childhood) but I like this plot twist much better, I'm glad you changed it. It made the story more, "Wait what?!" Instead of what we were expecting from you drawings of them.

I was also annoyed with the "Spunky Orphan Cliche" that has become so popular in media, and I was annoyed with myself for doing the same thing in the earlier drafts!  I was telling a friend that I just decided to include all my favorite tropes in this comic, and the Father/Daughter Trope is one of them.

paigemichael In reply to LadyPep [2018-03-19 19:59:19 +0000 UTC]

Oh I know right. If anything is slightly popular in media people run it into the ground. (Twilight with Vampires and Werewolves...) I love it though! We need more Father/Daughter interactions I think, instead of the typical absent Father.

Those books/films came out when I was in junior high and all the other girls were scary-obsessed over it.   Meanwhile, I was reading the 'Dune' books and Star Wars novels like a good little nerd. xD

Agreed!

Lol! One of my friends recommended the Twilight series to me so I read it in my freshman year of HS. I remember when Edward left and the book literally skipped MONTHS of her life and she was in the same spot doing nothing with her life. I thought, "Okay sure she's sad, but no one would surely just sit there and do nothing...for months.." Then how it ended with a cop out I remember throwing the book across my room I was so mad at how awful the writing was xDD All that build up and nothing. You missed nothing my friend, awful, horrible series. Waste of 3 days of reading.

OH NO!  I heard Bella's character development was...not great.  We watched the first movie in one of my classes for the last day of school my Sophomore year and she sounded like a very underdeveloped character.  I brought my iPod and doodled rather than watch it.  Defiant child! xD  One of my junior high friends recommended the series to me and I was just like, "mmm, nahhhh."  The one fandom I did jump on (though at the very end) was Harry Potter when the last two films came out--I'm still sort of frustrated with myself for not reading the books or knowing about the HP world earlier since my high school had a HP themed homecoming and decorated the halls in different Hogwarts House stuff! Also, why kill off so many characters, JK??? D:

paigemichael In reply to LadyPep [2018-03-21 03:05:30 +0000 UTC]

You missed NOTHINGGG. I felt so cheated. All you knew about her is she's obsessed with Edward and reads Withering Heights every Christmas. (I'm so mad I still know that.) Plus how freaking weird their romantic relationship was.. D:

HP is good and if you grew up with it, it was amazing growing up with the characters. I think people over hype it slightly and make it a cult/religion with how hardcore they are about it LOL. It's really good, don't get me wrong, but I know people who watch it all the time, are on Pottermore constantly, over talk about it, and have tons of tattoos dedicated to it. That side of the HP fan base turned me off to it a bit. They did a good job though on making the movies pretty close to the books. The one thing though, people who read the books hate Snape, those who only saw the movies love him xD it's a weird dynamic.

Don't ever read Game of Thrones if you don't like people dying. I used to think JK killed too many but this man has topped her. Literally 90 characters have died and he makes you like at least half of them! A lot of them I think, "Why? Why kill another when you JUST got us interested in their character?!" Plus the morality of the story is very concerning at times. Still not fully sure how I feel about the series, but the lore/mythology is wonderful and enticing.

LadyPep In reply to paigemichael [2018-03-21 16:56:47 +0000 UTC]

Yeahhh, I heard about the Stalker-ish aspects of their relationship and just thought, "that's not healthy."  Also, the protagonist seemed really "blah" based on the fanart I saw and the trailers for the movies. xP  One of the reasons why I like older books is because the romance seems more natural and doesn't get as weird as it does in modern literature...

My mom is super obsessed with Harry Potter, which I find funny because I read the books then recommended them to her.  She's read them more times than I have now and likes giving me 'Did You Know' facts about the franchise.  Birthday/Christmas is really easy now since all I have to do is get her some Harry Potter-themed gifts. xD  I try to stay on the "safe side" of fandoms, be it Harry Potter, Star Wars, or what have you because those Super Fans scare me!

I've heard about that!  I'd be so mad too! lol  The worldbuilding and characters look really interesting, but I haven't checked out the show or books because of the violence and racy aspects. :\

paigemichael In reply to LadyPep [2018-03-23 16:04:57 +0000 UTC]

Yeah it's SUPER weird and unhealthy. Right? Lately romance has this weird dynamic in it lately with some stories. Some people pull it off good still, but some...some are very concerning.

Haha no way! That's hilarious actually. That would make gifts easier, there are so many HP things nowadays too. Yeah people who overly obsess and get super sensitive about someone thinking differently in the fandom makes me run away from randoms lol. Like I love this movie, but you all are making me not like it right now xD

GoT is good but the over violence, weird morals, and unnecessary sex/nudity scenes are what make it meh to me. (Seriously he puts so many nudity/sex scenes with dialog that you could literally skip over, it feels so forced.) But overall there are a few awesome characters who have great development and it does keep you wondering what's going to happen but not family friendly like LotR or Narnia xD (which I prefer).

Especially with television shows!  Another reason why I'm very selective about what shows I watch and which ones I'd rather not waste time on >__>

lol I even got her a Hogwarts house blanket at Barnes & Noble for Mother's Day one year!  When all that crazy fan stuff happens I usually avoid that fandom until the craze dies down and then I'll give it my attention (like with Voltron...those fans scare me ).

I heard those dialog/sex scenes referred to as "sexposition" because they give a lot of exposition while that happens, which seems like a dumb idea to get content across to me.  Oh, I LOVE LOTR!  I've even read the Silmarillion, which is like the book for the super nerdy fans of the series. xD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

paigemichael In reply to LadyPep [2018-03-24 21:17:33 +0000 UTC]

Exactly!

I've wanted to try Voltron because I hear about it SO much, but the fandom terrifies me. Especially when people don't like Keith and Lance together people seem to get really agitated.. but it looks like a good show.

It totally is and it's SO STUPID. I don't understand xd it's totally a, "I know sex sells so we're gonna abuse it." >.> I haven't read the Simarillion, but I love LotR and Narnia, we need more of these in our life please ;__;

LadyPep In reply to paigemichael [2018-03-26 17:38:06 +0000 UTC]

Eh, the show itself is okay.  And yeah, the shipping fans are what drives me away from liking the series. >__>  I personally feel like Sym-Bionic Titan is a better version of the "team becomes a mecha" concept, but you'll have to see for yourself!

I heard that there were negotiations going on in the process of making a Silmarillion TV series (which would be a better fit than a film since it's the history of Middle Earth), but they fell through last year. D:
