Yours is so much prettier than mine that its sad. But all things considered, mine's not completely awful. especially for my first time sewing ANYTHING. Some cloth and a bunch of bandaids later, here i am with my not terrible, albeit rustic scale mate. it turned out a lot smaller than i expected, only about two inches tall in total, but its still pretty cute so thanks so much for this tutorial!

Well don't feel bad! I made about 30 scalemates before I made the tutorial, and let me tell you, my first ones look horrible. Practice really does make perfect!
As for the size thing, did you remember to size up the pattern pieces? Copy/paste them into Microsoft Word or a similar word processing program and size them to fit standard 8.5"x11" printer paper. Then print and cut them out and you should get a normal-sized scalemate.

No, I'm actually quite quite proud of my scalemate. its my first sewing project EVAR and it didn't overly fail, and it even resembles a scalemate, so thanks so much for making this tutorial so that it would be impossible for me to fail! ^ ^
Haha, I didn't size up the pattern correctly OTL oops.

It's just simple fleece! Any fabric store should have it. It doesn't matter if you get regular or no-pill fleece, but I think regular is fuzzier and looks nicer. No-pill is generally flatter and less fuzzy.

Yep! They're easy to make; just shrink the pattern down a bit.

Because I didn't have enough small buttons for them. Four-holed small buttons aren't that easy to find.

I'm going to try this when I get materials! Just wondering, about how much material do you need for the whole thing?

xD I forgot to find stuffing, so I just used cotton balls. :/

LavastormSW In reply to Sprinkles4Breakfast [2012-09-09 04:53:46 +0000 UTC]
Oh that's okay! Really any stuffing works. I even used fabric scraps to stuff one of mine! It was a little bit lumpy, so I suggest cutting up the fabric into teeny tiny bits if you use that method. But I think cotton balls would work wonderfully.

Keep in mind that I made roughly 30 before this one, so it's a accumulation of all the trial and error I went through. Practice makes perfect, after all. My first scalemates look horrible compared to this one!

Not a lot! Just a little scrap will do for the belly and about a 1/2 yard (maybe less) for the body. And two big buttons. In the description of part 1a I talk about it more.

Just so that you know, and it might help others also?
The stitch you are using to attach the head is also called a ladder stitch.

Some people just might find it easier to understand if it's mentioned that way, even if they understand what it is by the picture.
