So I made a scalemate with this tutorial

My friend wants me to make another one for him

The only problem is, I think the head placement is a little off on mine. I want to make his nicer, since he introduced me to Homestuck in the first place.

Any tips or suggestions on how the head should be aligned on the body? Thanks!

LavastormSW In reply to jananae [2014-02-28 18:32:08 +0000 UTC]

I don't really have any concrete way of pinning the head to the body. I hold the head and hand-position it with no pins, then just start sewing with what looks like the right position. It might help to sew almost all the way around, then put more stuffing in the body to even it out. Sorry if this isn't very helpful.

That's ok. I think I just placed the head a little too far back on mine. After comparing mine with your pictures, I've concluded that there's too much nose sticking out. It's a great tutorial, anyways!

Seriously, I thought this would be impossible, but you made it simple yet detailed, and I think I might make this as a birthday present for a friend

Thanks so much! I've never sewn before, and I am visually impaired, but your tutorial helped. Mine didn't turn out perfect, but he looks pretty good. I'll keep practicing :3. His name his Gizmo, he's light grey with one red eyes and one dark grey eye. His tummy is dark, and i'm not sure what symbol I'll add yet...

I'm left wondering.
What could you possibly do with 40-50 scalemates?
Do you have a closet you've booby trapped so that when unsuspecting travelers open the door, become covered with scalemates? Because, that, my friend, would be awesome.

But anyways, yeah. I'll grab my sewing stuff. This 'seams' to be a great summer project.

LavastormSW In reply to Dolkapot [2013-06-03 02:34:06 +0000 UTC]

I should booby trap my door. That's a good idea!

Right now I just cleaned my room, so they're sitting in two garbage bags in the corner. I used to just have them lying around.

Im having trouble with the button part since it has only two holes :l

LavastormSW In reply to missJenler [2013-04-07 03:24:24 +0000 UTC]

If your button only has two holes, just loop the thread through the holes a couple times and tie it off like how I show in the tutorial.

Thank you so much for this! I was able to make an adorable (albiet very lumpy and not perfect) little scalemate of my own to go with my Terezi cosplay! I named him Patches. :3 Again, thanks for this amazing tutorial! I hope to keep practicing to make a bunch. <3

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LavastormSW In reply to TheBigMystery [2013-02-04 07:05:55 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome! If your scalemate turned out lumpy, I'd suggest stuffing it with small bits of stuffing rolled into balls. That way it's easier to position them and kind of sculpt your plush into the shape you want.

Thank you for the great tutorial!
Also, I'm not sure if it's been mentioned, but I found that safety pinning the head to the body makes attaching the two a lot easier

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LavastormSW In reply to sintarith [2013-01-23 22:07:37 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome!

And I never found safety pins to be helpful, but that doesn't mean you can't use them. It could probably help, but I was never able to secure it properly with them. Do whatever works for you.

Well, mine doesn't look as pretty as yours, but it's pretty good considering I haven't sewn in a couple years!
Strangely enough, the only part I had trouble with was sewing on the feet to the legs. Thanks for posting such an easy-to-follow tutorial!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LavastormSW In reply to Dappledleaves [2012-11-04 21:38:26 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome! And mine probably only look better because I've made literally dozens of them. My first few were all lumpy and weird.

How many Scalemates have you made in total? (Also, did your first one look as amazing as the one above??)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LavastormSW In reply to II-Sollux-Captor-II [2012-09-09 17:50:31 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I have no idea how many I've made total. Probably around 40 or 50. And no, my first couple looks horrible. What you see up there is probably about my 30th one, an accumulation of a lot of trial and error and experimenting.

you have inspired me to make my first scalemate! This tutorial is very well put together and I can't wait to start.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LavastormSW In reply to Trieheart [2012-09-09 04:57:47 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I tried to write it so even someone who hasn't sewn before could use it. The tutorial I used was much more vague and I struggled a little with it, so I wanted to make a very detailed one for beginners.
