Description This is Lemontea's Definitive Vector Guide Version 3.0.1. That title was a wee bit large for the title on DeviantART.

For all those who have never seen version 1 or 2, this the guide for Photoshop 7 - CS2. These are true vectors; they are not rasters. Deal with it if you don't like it, you purists, but Photoshop is a capable vector program. Props off to `voodoo-prophet , ^object2bdestroyd , *turp , ~fuzzynoise , and others who have supported me and helped me with vectors so many times.

I hope this allows everyone who wants to try their hand at this tutorial to get introduced to the wonderful world of vectors.

Have fun! This weighs in at about 910KB so you might want to make a sandwich or something if you're on 56k. I promise that this tutorial works if you can sit down and try it, and I suggest you do. I've seen so many great results and people that are now better than me because of trying my tutorial when they were first getting started. I can pick out "lemontea-styled" vectors from thumbnails in the vector galleries, and it's somewhat humbling.

INSTRUCTIONS
In order to use this tutorial, you must uncompress all of the files in the zip file to the same directory. WinZIP or the default WindowsXP compression agent will allow you to do this. To launch the actual tutorial, open the "index.html" file.

If there is a problem, feel free to access this guide on-line at [link]

Dude I've whored this tutorial to so many people. Thanks for making it. Again. It's an excuse not to make my own in depth tutorial.

Pish, you're welcome. I made it so I wouldn't have to explain it to people again and again, so we're in the same boat.

This summer, I figure that I'll go a little more indepth in some of the aspects of the tutorial -- sort of make it more detailed where appropriate. However, your tutorial would be way different than mine, as I can easily tell from your hair tutorial. I mean, mine just says to not use curves (because that's my style) but I think it should include some of your techniques, along with curving on the fly.

turp In reply to lemontea [2006-01-30 03:05:22 +0000 UTC]

It would be more detailed. It's just really hard to teach people how to curve. I started out doing it like you do, then I started playing with the handlebars. People want to know how to do it NOW though, they dont want to play with it and learn on their own.

Yes, I think a large part of it is a laziness factor. Nearly 98% of that guide is unneeded. The short version of my guide is like this: "Click on the pen tool and try to make stuff that looks like you see in the vector gallery."

But, if you don't mind, I'm going to link the next version of my tutorial to yours -- that way I don't have to explain the control points over and over again!

No problem. Hopefully I'll be doing more tutorials soon or something...although I don't know what I could explain really.

Sorry for the noob question: can everything here be done in CS1 and older? or do i need to engage in the (costly) upgrade to CS2? Thanks

This tutorial was great. I already knew how to use the pen tool but never really thought of using it like you did in the tutorial. This is what I had been looking for, a new challenge in photoshop. I was getting tired of all the brushing in PS and now this opens up "adventures" for me. Thank you again, and if you don't mind, if you have any other vector tutorials/tips that would be helpful, point me in their direction.

lemontea In reply to fanzi [2005-09-18 21:22:08 +0000 UTC]

To open the zip file, get WinZIP or WinRAR. If you have Windows XP, you can open the zip file without WinZIP or WinRAR. To open the index.html, double click on it -- it's an HTML document (you know, like, the internet...).

THANK. YOU.

I had always put my vector art in the digital art catagory since I used Photoshop, and photoshop is a raster program [according to dA's vector art description, putting a vector piece made in PS would be the wrong area].

I've actually been doing this for a little while, I just finished one recently and am working on another...so I probably know much of the stuff in your tutorial. Regardless, I'm going to bookmark this for future reference. I dunno, maybe you have some neat tips I dunno about or something. Either way, reading the description tells me there is a LOT to this, and the fact that you got a DD [which helped me find this =]] is encouraging. Thanks!

Sweetness of the tutorial kind! I could see a lot of people coming away with a lot of stuff learning looking at the way it's set up. I love your examples and whatnots. Could see that you worked quite hard on it (and even ran through spellcheck, wee!).

If I would have one suggestion, is to add a slight padding in the html to the tables that house text that hug the borders on the left. I know, not that big of a deal .. but whatever.
