Description ‘In the heart of Transylvania,
In the Vampire Hall of Fame - yeah!
There's not a vampire zanier than… Duckula!’

I wonder how many people will remember this guy.

I was recently reminded of this show when someone posted a list of old 80’s cartoons in their online journal. The titles on the list brought back many memories long forgotten and I could just hit myself for forgetting about Count Duckula. I loved that show so much that I remember insisting to my parents that I wanted a Count Duckula plush. They hunted high and low and finally found one. A couple of years later, I ended up donating him to the school fate, not knowing how rare he would become. I had kept him in excellent condition too (darn, why was I so naïve at that age?!) Anyway, The story has a happy ending however. I was browsing eBay a couple of days ago and came across him again, in mint condition. So, naturally, I had to have him and in doing so, would like to think that I have claimed a part of my childhood back at the same time!

So here’s one of my childhood memories; possibly one of the best designed (and voiced) characters of all time, as well as the only vegetarian vampire you’re likely to come across!

LOL, At one point the theme tune was all that I could remember. It didn't scare me as a kid though, because I was rather wierd anyway... no, the scaring was left to Jeff Wayne's The War of the Worlds LP! That scared the hell out of me.

My sympathies on cool things lost at young age... I had tons of cool stuff; comics and cartoons taped on video, yet 99% of them are all gone by now...

Gotta love your take on our favourite Transylvainian vampire-duck here! I particularly like the slim hands and the eyes. Also I have allways trouble trying to make his hair right, but you pulled it all perfecto...

Cheers to the Count!!!

Yeah, it's such a shame that such things get lost to time. It's interesting however, how many things become retro. I came across a Rainbow Brite t-shirt yesterday! LOL! Brings to mind one question though... if things as old as Bagpuss, Bill and Ben etc... have come back all new and updated, why hasn't Duckula?! Gah! I would love to see Duckula t-shirts in the shops!

Btw, Thank you, I'm glad you like him. yeah, I made him kinda more slinky and 'in the shadows' like. As for his hair, it helps to think of him as having a bat on his head! ^_^

*Seconds the notion*... aye, cheers to the count!

Good question, yet I feel like if Duckula was to come back, he'd be all screwed up ala Looney Tunes. So I guess I'm personally happy with things the way they are... although I too wouldn't mind a few T-shirts, posters or mugs...

Bat on the head, huh? x) *tries that out sometime*

LOL, you're probably right. Just makes Duckula all the rarer I guess!

'Bat on the head', aye! XD Looks like a big pair of wings to me. By the way, if you're interested, I've got two model sheets for Duckula here (good reference for his 'bat head' hair):

And now to just try finding my own style for him! Thanks for those ref-sheets!

All hail the duckman for he is cool! LOL

I'm happy that you like this sketch. I realize that I haven't exactly stuck to Cosgrove's model sheet, but I guess the result is close enough. I should get around to doing more Duckula art. Perhaps some colour stuff!

Which reminds me, you have such awesome Duckula artwork yourself! I hope you don't mind, but I've set your Duckula Vs. Goosewing pic as my desktop wallpaper (I love that pic! Goosewing looks as if he might be floating down the stairs, love it!)

I remember Count Duckula.

Though Danger Mouse is more widely remembered than Duckula... Also, there was another one that's even more obscure called Banana Man, but I don't have many memories of that one at all except the name.

Leopreston In reply to Threetails [2006-07-16 20:21:26 +0000 UTC]

OMG! Banana Man! LOL! Sadly, I used to watch that one too:

[link]

Wasn't Banana Man born from the Beano comic?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Threetails In reply to Leopreston [2006-07-18 04:16:10 +0000 UTC]

Not sure... They never sold the Beano comics stateside, though Banana Man was shown on one of the U.S. cable channels in the late 80s- early 90s.

Leopreston In reply to Threetails [2006-07-18 09:10:36 +0000 UTC]

Oh, in that case, perhaps the TV show Banana Man came out after the Beano comics, as a sort of tie-in spin off thing. ??

I know what you mean, the only 'modern' kids cartoons I can stand nowadays are Spongebob and Invader Zim (because I have such a strange sense of humour!)

Btw, try searching for Duckula at: [link] I know that there are at least two episodes posted up on there.

^_^ I remember doing that when I was 16. A friend and I went down to out local park and tried to out-do each other on the swings, seeing who could swing higher. She won, because I began to feel sick! Fun fun fun!!!

blah! I'm vere to suck your tomatos.

It's too bad I never saw that show... I was two years old in 1988 so I probably just missed it's air time.

Artistically speaking, you've once again proven yourself to have an amazing ability to draw anything in any style. I'm curious though, do you have a prefered style to go by? Or do you have multiple styles and change your style based on the nature and mood of the drawing?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Leopreston In reply to Lupinator [2006-07-16 13:57:21 +0000 UTC]

Heh, someone uploaded the title and end credits sequence to that show here (as well as some episodes, but not some of the best):

[link]
[link]

The ending was one of the things I loved most about that show. Makes me laugh even now.

Btw, I had always been told by various tutors that most illustrators aim to vary their styles in order to meet the demands of different briefs, and of course, to get more work. I do have a main style (look at the Armarniss stuff), but I enjoy varying depending on what I'm drawing. In the case of something like Duckula, I like to stay true to the original.
You may have noticed in your commission, that I have borrowed several details from your own reference drawings? I certainly wouldn't have drawn Midnight's eyes like that if I hadn't seen the way you draw her first.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Lupinator In reply to Leopreston [2006-07-16 18:47:05 +0000 UTC]

LOL, you're weren't kidding about Duckula's ending. Classic.

So, have you been to or are you currently in school for illustration? What is your job if you don't mind me asking? I just mean, you certainly have the ability and variation to score some real cash with your artwork. Only, if you managed to get the proper recognition and if the right opertunities were to arise.

Manyways, you should try and work for Disney or something...
