Description The Eighth Doctor comic strips are really good. They introduce several great new companions, feature the return of the Master, the Toymaker, the Cybermen and more alongside some memorable new villains and monsters and generally have an underlying sense of fun while touching on some very serious issues.

They also feature a story involving the most colourful collection of Daleks ever.

Set years after Evil of the Daleks, 'Children of the Revolution' tells the tale of what became of the Alpha, one of the test subjects for the Human Factor experiment. With the Emperor's forces turning the tide of the battle, Alpha led a group of fellow Human Factor Daleks to escape in a flying saucer. They set up a city under the surface of an ocean planet and set about building a society. Without the desire for conflict and dominance shared by their Skaro brethren, they developed their inherent psycho-kinetic powers to the point of manifesting full-blown telekinesis.

It all ends rather sadly when it turns out they are being used as a food source by a giant telepathic undersea cabbage. But it was fun while it lasted.

So here we have Sukatri, Mikkith, Alpha, Adellus, and two other citizens of Azhra Korr.

I decided to go with the toy colour scheme for Alpha as it is more distinct from the 'normal' red Daleks, and I gave the security chaps in blue a different highlight colour as they were generally shaded darker than the rest.

I doubt I will do orthos for all of them, but I might do them for Alpha and the gunless variants.

Daleks belong to Terry Nation's Estate, they were designed by Ray Cusick and these variants are based on the art of Lee Sullivan for a story by Scott Gray (and a jolly good job they did too!)

I always liked this comic, even if the villain was sea kelp. It's good to see them done justice!

Oh, I love Children of the Revolution, both as a stand alone and as a part of Izzy's story arc.

And hey, who says sea kelp can't be evil?

It's a real shame we never found out what happened to Beta and Omega - the other two test subjects in the Human Factor experiment.
We never saw them in this comic story (at least not to my knowledge although I'm aware a toy version of Omega was made in this YouTube video ) and we never heard either Alpha or the Doctor talk about them.
It could have easily been settled with the Doctor asking about Beta and Omega, to which Alpha replies that he believes his 'brothers' died in the Civil War or confirmed that they died.

It would be interesting to see if they'd actually survived, developed differing personalities and maybe gone on adventures together - showing them adapting to the universe (both in dealing with species that try to kill them, developing and improving their powers/abilities and maybe altering their forms to 'discard' some of their ancestry) and making a positive difference.
Can you imagine for instance if they rescued a child from a Dalek attack and then tried to raise that child due to the child's parents been killed? I think it would be an interesting and emotional journey that would be unique and thought-provoking, with both sides discovering more about each other and having their experiences change throughout their lives.

In regards to your artwork, I think it's really good and it's cool to see fanart of this particular comic, even if the ending was a sad one.
Well done.

Oh, I absolutely agree there's a lot of potential in following the others. I mean, I've started (and then stalled, as usual) on a comic following Beta. You can see what I have of it elsewhere in the gallery, though I didn't bring it to the interesting point of exploring what it means to be a moral Dalek in a universe with, well, the normal Daleks in it.

I don't mind that Children of the Revolution leaves it open. It means there's room to fill in the gaps! That said, I've always been pretty certain that Omega was killed during the course of Evil of the Daleks, given that he was the only one of the three discovered by the Black Daleks and subsequently impersonated by a normal Dalek.

Thanks for commenting!

Ah yes, I've seen those pictures. I'll be looking forward to when you continue the story, regardless of which direction you take it in.
Also, Beta redesigned as a 'Green Lantern' was pretty cool.

Very true. I still hold onto hope that Omega is alive, mind you as when the 'mind-controlled' Doctor told the Emperor to send all the Daleks through the archway to instill the Dalek Factor in all of them (when they were instead getting instilled with the Human Factor) and presuming they'd captured Omega, they either would have brought Omega out to be put through or left him imprisoned - meaning he might have survived the initial conflict and been released later.

No worries.
Btw, I've found a fan reconstruction of the lost Evil of the Daleks episodes and put them in this journal (along with a link to the one surviving episode) if you're interested in seeing it: Lost Doctor Who Serial - Fan Reconstruction...

Pretty much exactly what I was going for, revisiting the classic models with New Series design aesthetics. This version (or rather, the version these chaps are derived from) sits immediately before the Time War Daleks in my pet chronology (based on Big Finish's use of the classic grey and blue style).

Oh this is brilliant, I love the Eighth Doctor Comic strips form DWM, the stories are so innovative and multi-layered. I've often found myself thinking as I read through my old magazine issues and the collected graphic novels by Panini Books that, and I acknowledge that many people will disagree with this, the new series of Doctor Who should have been like that, well in as far they should have kept the multi episode format of the classic series, keep Paul Mcgann as the Doctor and eliminate the story line of the Time War. I mean Gallifrey had so much potential in the new series and now that potential has been squandered I swear since the new show Doctor Who is a shadow of what it was. It's sad really.

Ahem sorry for the rant I just can't help but think that the new series could have been so much better than what it is, any way like I said I love what you've done here your Daleks look magnificent as always. I have to ask though, is any of your other designs based on the Doctor Who comic or Big Finnish audio adventures? Just curious. Β  Β Β  Β  Β  Β

Librarian-bot In reply to apdarkness905 [2014-11-25 12:38:00 +0000 UTC]

No need to apologise for a rant! I indulge in them myself, fairly often, usually when DC Comics announces its next descent into inanity. Thanks very much for taking the time to do it here!

Having said that, while I absolutely understand what you mean, I personally don't agree about the status of the current series. As a matter of taste, I enjoy it and continue to do so. As with all eras of Doctor Who, there are things that work, things that don't, things that are fantastic and things that are dire. Some things have been lost in the transition, sure, but a lot has been gained as well and it continues to be a successful show

Concerning Gallifrey specifically, I think I am largely ambivalent on how much potential it has for telling good Doctor Who stories. While I dislike the tendency to assume that having it around will somehow limit the stories you can tell (because it's not like it's hard to just not involve it . . .), I also kind of think everything that needed to be said about it was said in The War Games: it is what the Doctor is running away from, a staid, boring civilization of observers and recorders. I'm not saying that you couldn't tell a good story there, just that it will likely not be a good *Doctor Who* story (on which note, I really must catch up with Big Finish's Gallifrey series at some point). Again, personal opinion. I love the DWM comics, especially the 8th Doctor ones, and would love for them to get more recognition in the wider history of the show.

Oh, and glad you like the Daleks! More comic and audio related images can be found throughout my gallery - for example, I've got the Daleks from Fire and Brimstone, the third 8th Doctor comic story (librarian-bot.deviantart.com/a… and a natty selection of Dalek Empire (librarian-bot.deviantart.com/a… and Dark Eyes (librarian-bot.deviantart.com/a… inspired pieces, if I do say so myself!

Thank you for the reply and sharing your opinion and thoughts on the new series and while I can understand and respect why the new show is popular I myself am not a fan for many reasons some of which I have already listed in my first comment, I could list the others but that would take forever.

Oh and thank for the links in your reply and answering my question I really appreciate it.Β

P.S. I'm with you 100% about the insanity that has engulfed DC Comics as well as Marvel for that matter, half the time they make an announcement about an upcoming change in there comics story line or mythology it's like a lunatic would have dreamed up. I mean what the hell are they thinking, actually don't answer that I doubt even God knows what they'er thinking.Β

Yeah - I usually cite DC because they tend to be worse at compulsively derailing potentially interesting stories, but Marvel has more than its fair share of daft decisions.

Since I can only find images of Alpha in a cursory google search, I'm guessing the the "blank hole" instead of a gunstick is from the actual comic, right? That seems a little odd, you'd think the Daleks would rather replace it with a spare plunger arm or something instead of losing a limb entirely (like the 'civilian' Daleks from Second Empire).

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Librarian-bot In reply to NdRo-Fox [2014-11-24 14:20:25 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, they're like that in the comic. It makes a kind of sense given that the Azhra Korr Daleks are all fully developed telekinetics: they don't *need* manipulators any more.

And I've always sort of suspected that Daleks are hardwired to use only one arm - they're so bonded to the casings that one arm/one gun is all that makes sense to them. Adding another would be like giving a human a third arm. But that's just ideal speculation, really.
