Description
The thing about Mechonoids is that the original design just didn't make sense as a service/construction robot. At least the Daleks had suckers - all the Mechonoids got was two bits of bent wire that they could flap and, at a pinch, use to hug a Dalek.I tried to rectify that with my original design in ProEngineer but it's only now that I have Blender and a fair bit of processing power that I can do so properly.
And yes, this is very heavily inspired by iPods and GLaDOS.
Doctor Who belongs to the BBC.

Oh wow, this looks more believable than the ones that had the flimsy wire arms. But I guess they had to use what was available. But still, love this redesign! I also love the eyes!

Thanks! I quite like the eyes myself - they turned out looking great, almost by complete chance!

Pretty sure that Mechanoids were never service robots. They were their own alien race. But then in the Big Finish drama The Juggernauts, Davros took their shells and human brains to make service bots.

The original explanation that Steven gives in 'The Chase' is that the Mechonoids were created to build colonies for humans on distant worlds. They were shot out into deep space and left to get on with the job of preparing planets for human occupation. Unfortunately, Earth became involved in a war and no one ever got round to actually doing the occupying bit and, in fact, the Mechonoids' command codes became lost. As a result, even when humans (e.g. Steven and the TARDIS crew) showed up, the Mechonoids would not acknowledge that they were actually human beings.
Then, of course, the Dalek Chronicle comicstrip completely ignored this origin - or, at least, never referenced it - and had the Mechonoids be a space empire in their own right. And there's no reason why the two versions can't co-exist, assuming that multiple groups of Mechonoids were sent out and some of them went fully rogue.
I prefer to place The Juggernauts after this original origin simply because I think the technology in it sounded more advanced and it would be a bit of a contrived explanation if it were Davros who enabled the Mechonoids to put up a fight against the Daleks in 'The Chase'.

Oh I don't think it was Davros who made the Mechanoids fight the Daleks. I think they would've done that anyways in the name of self defense. I definitely think the comic strip and origin story can co-exist. I totally forgot all that stuff Steven said. It's been ages since I watched the Chase. Last year some time really.

it's amazing to think that these ungainly things could actually threaten the daleks!

Eh, it's slightly less embarrassing than the whole 'beaten up by theatrical robots' incident from earlier in the same story...

Yeah... this always bugged me during "The Chase".
How did one of the most feared lifeforms in the universe lose (I know they sort of drew but anyway), to a bunch of robots who could only hug them? Seriously?

I suspect it's down in the 'Dalek Greatest Battles' book as a huge triumph when the Dalek squad sacrificed themselves to bring down the city on top of all the Mechnonoids...

Excellent if intimidating re-imagining of a Mechanoid.
I imagine these were the sorts of Mechanoids who were imposing to the Daleks in the 1960s comic strips.
On Mechanus they were somewhat useless, though they did prove that in a pinch a flame thrower will work against a Dalek.

Yes...that's always slightly baffled me. I mean, sure, yeah, fire is more impressive than 'ray gun' flashing, but it does seem a bit of a peculiar choice for something that could serious injure a Dalek...
(In this design, that thing is meant to be a plasma torch or something properly dangerous to metal...)
Glad you like the redesign!

In a way, they were. It's generally accepted that the Mechonoids, like the Chumblies and Quarks, were attempts to create impressive robots that would be as marketable as the Daleks. I think this is only really true of the Mechonoids, and unfortunately none of these attempts were exactly impressive!

I've only seen bits and pieces of the classic episodes, but I suspect that this is much cooler than what they showed with their low budget :b

Love the Aperture Science-inspired heavy duty mechanisms hidden below minimalist panelling, and it makes perfect sense in context. Reminds me a bit of a giant MorpHex.
