Description Menoid Industries would like to reassure its customers that stories of its products going rogue and setting up their own societies on distant colony worlds are extremely exaggerated. Certainly, should any astronaut become stranded on a planet being prepared for human habitation by Mechonoid units, their every need will be catered for thanks to the Menoid+ authority/safeguard algorithms.

They entered a series of wars with the Thals in the 'Brotherhood of the Daleks' audio book. At some point after that they entered a war with the Daleks and were pushed back to their last stronghold, Magella, which the Daleks attacked and destroyed in the novel 'Birth of a Legend' rendering the Mechanoids extinct.

This really is a great re-design of the Mechonoids. And I'm not even sure it's correct to call this a 're-design' so much as just demonstrating how big polyhedronal things could actually be maintenance robots. Adding on to what was already there. They never exactly showed Mechonoids doing any kind of work, so it was a non-issue.

Mal170582 [2012-11-11 06:25:04 +0000 UTC]

I dunno... they look... different. I am really torn with this one. Though, I think I will grow to like them; paradoxically, I LOVED the Cybusmen when publicity pics were released, loved them stomping across manicured lawns, crashing through windows and whiping out partygoers with electric fists... and then I kinda came to dislike them intensely. That piping under the plates just screamed "cheap and easy", and how lazy the neck-joining was...

...and yes; totally agree that the "Iron Man" style of seamlessly integrating the joints with flexible plating is a HUGE, HUGE improvement; even if this is done with "foam" plating in filming, it still looks 300% better in my eyes and goes a long way to restoring my faith in the armour look (and hey; this is Doctor Who; I doubt all six series so far had the budget of one Iron Man movie...)

Ah - you mean those limb pipes... I dunno - if they were fluid pipes then the breaks up/down their lengths make little sense to me...

I Am going to grieve the "loss" of the wetsuits; metal is one thing but there is something so clinical, soulless and convenient about plastic or polymer-metal hybrids. Mass-production and all that... Still, we've yet to see these things in action. What I like about them is they strike a balance between threatening and comical - I love when Doctor Who monsters have a slight, slight look of the surreal or ridiculous; a) it makes sense that aliens would evolve/adapt in such a way that would not resemble what was "cool" on Earth, and b) there is nothing more frightening than when something ridiculous turns murderous, which is the very essence of the charm and efficacy of Doctor Who...

Not that its related to this Mechanoid thread, but I guess you saw these - Series 7: First Look at New Cybermen
[link]

What are your thoughts? Initially? I... don't know. I wanted wetsuits and a fairly bulky chest unit. Still, they are slim and they look totally bland in the face. Not bad... I guess...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Librarian-bot In reply to Mal170582 [2012-11-10 11:46:17 +0000 UTC]

I like 'em a lot. It's exactly the kind of streamlining I wanted to see. As you know, I don't mind the armoured look, and while I agree that it would be nice to see a proper chest unit again, I can live with this because it actually looks functional. For example, the central disc appears to be some sort of iris aperture that looks like it could open up - a return to the chest-mounted weaponry, perhaps?

The faces are lovely, bland masks rather than art-deco skulls, and I think they've integrated the arm weapons much better than before. The detailing on the armour really works - which is good, because excessing detail can be very distracting. I especially like how they've merged the upper arm and thigh 'pipes' with the various plates.

My conclusion? It's a great redesign that builds on the Cybusmen and streamlines it, while still nicely integrating elements of the 60s style, especially the Tomb and Wheel types.

-well, keeping in mind I like the idea of Krotons originally being a crystal "soup" that mimicked a lost servo robot, or something. Goes a long way to explaining why they look ... like robots. Hope you keep their cool "fire extinguisher" guns. I loved the look of those!

...the idea of Krotons originally being a crystal "soup" that mimicked a lost servo robot, or something...I'm getting vibes of the Vex from Destiny here. The robotic form is merely dead metal, produced by the metallic secretions of a living biomechanical microbial colony to provide the microbes with mobility and protection.

Me too! I'll definitely be keeping them - I had an idea about detailing them today which I think could work nicely.

Interesting thought about the Krotons mimicking something...I think the way I see it is that the Krotons onscreen were a service form, meant to operate at low power and repair the ship. I'll probably build something closer to them when I'm done with the warrior class...

Heyup!

Just wanted to say, once again you've done what you do best - taken a design that didn't work (in my opinion - the Mechanoids never really seemed threatening to me), given it a subtle makeover, and made it badass! I LOVE the creepy little LED eyes on the top band that kind of extend out to regard whatever-it-is-its-regarding. And I like the "Doc Ock" feel of all those arms that extend out of the triangular recesses! Much better than the pinchers of the originals.

My only gripe would be the flamethrower, which looks a little flimsy, especially compared to the "dish" version you did a few years ago. But suffice to say, I can Completely see these things being dumped on a planet to build a colony in lieu of humans, and I can Totally see these things taking out a Dalek or two...

Speaking of which - the Hive Dalek you did is ... interesting. Not sure I like the midsection band that doesnt vary its height around the sides but... I am very curious to see if it grows on me!

Excellent work, old friend! And I am DYING to see the new Kroton... and I think you hit the nail on the head, there. Too often, Doctor Who monsters and robots suffered from the "upper section good, lower section = crossdresser ballgown" look that worked for the Daleks so brilliantly, but failed with Krotons, Tractators, Wirrn etc... And I am looking forward to a better-designed version of Davros' Imperial domehead casing! It was a good shot, but didn't Quite fire my imagination as its seen on TV... as you say, the clumsy join of the dome to the panelled skirt...

Yours,
Eddy

Hey! Sorry for the delayed response, I've been unable to sit down and focus on my correspondence messages for a while...

Glad you like the redesigned Mechonoids! The original geodesic domes are a very interesting shape but regrettably not much else. They don't have the 'acting ability' of the Dalek props and really, they're just too clumsy (and the grappling arms are a complete joke). I'm happy I've finally been able to realise the full potential of the arms-behind-panels approach, even though it was hard work. Blame Gerry Anderson, but I've always had a soft-spot for machines that open up and reveal hidden equipment.

The eyes were a bit of luck, actually. I got them right first go - they're fairly simple in structure but the colours make them pop more than I could have hoped. I debated colours for a while, and I think green was the right choice. It's nominally a happy, friendly colour but it's so easy to tip over into sinister...

As for the flamethrower/laser torch, I deliberately paired it back so it was closer to the original in size and shape. Extra detailing on the dish seemed somewhat unnecessary, given that it's just a shield to protect the arm from the heat of the beam....

The Hive Dalek Supreme is a very weird design, that could only have come out of the comics. It's very much a rule of cool design, and with very little in the way of fine detail in its original form. I did a lot of improvising to bring it up to spec. I'm happy with the way it turned out, though I can understand if it's not everyone's cup of tea!

Working on the Kroton as we speak (trying to figure out arms, I've decided to do away with the plastic hose look completely, if only because it would be a pig to model) and will get around to Davros' casing soonish. It's mostly built, but that join is a pain. It's incredibly hard to get the skirt to flow into the sphere when I don't have a shoulder section to smooth the transition...

It will of course all go up on here when I'm done!
