Description Dalek Time Controller: Time War era

With the creation of the first Time Controller - a true vortex-sensitive Dalek - the Dalek Empire finally came close to matching the power of the Time Lords. Able to discern means of altering the past without compromising the Dalek species, the Time Controller not only masterminded the construction or acquisition of immensely powerful temporal technologies, it used its understanding temporal mechanics to duplicate itself over and over. The Time Controllers became the guiding hand on every front of the Time War, working as one to forge a Dalek-dominated universe.

--

And here's the model! I did consider, briefly, bringing in more elements of the Red Supreme, but the descriptions in the book suggest it largely resembles a normal bronze drone, the gyro rings aside.

[EDIT: Updated model and colours for greater accuracy]

The Dalek Time Controller was created by Nick Briggs and first visualised by Brian Williamson (brianaw.deviantart.com/) . This version is based on that design and the model created by Big Finish's in-house artists, together with the descriptions provided in the novel, 'The Dalek Generation'.

I Hope This Dalek will one day be featured in the main TV series Out of all the dalek individuals the Time Controller is the most reoccurring in the big finish audios and probably hasΒ the most well developed personality. it's manipulative, mysterious, cool and calm compared to the other daleks and seems to be invincible.Β Β

Heh - saw that this weekend. I am sorely tempted to retroactively rename my Time War model in a wibbly-wobbly time can be rewritten sort of way!

Wow this Dalek has power! I`d hate to be the doctor encountering this guy!
Then again I'd be surprised if the other daleks fully trust a dalek with the power to control time.

Hi - sorry for the delay in replying. I can't really claim ownership of the design you've asked about s per se, given that they're modelled so closely on the official versions. The Time Controller is the only one made up from scratch and even that's based very closely on an 'official' Big Finish model. Also, I'm not really sure what you meant by using the design in a film. Unfortunately, I'm not currently prepared to upload the models themselves online (partly the hassle in finding somewhere to host them, mostly because they need improving before I'm happy with them).

Sorry about that.

Thanks! As I noted in the description, it's based on 'The Dalek Generation', but really it's an extension of the stuff in Dark Eyes - I figure it's creating things like this that make the Daleks a real threat to the Time Lords, so it was probably there in the War with all the other bronze bods!

That is one gorgeous dalek model. Truly magnificent! You've depicted this thorn in the Doctor's side well.

I thought that the description of him in the book was rather unique.

Thanks!

Yeah, it was a very interesting description - nice to see what Nick Briggs thinks his creation should look like! I have to say, I would probably have favoured making the rings mechanical (as I have hear) rather than (as was implied) energy. I just tend to prefer there to be a mechanism in place with these things - one of the reasons I didn't try and replicate the energy effect here. That said, I do have an idea for how to render it 'active' - as you can see in my response to Kasterborous, above.

I think the Time Controller is possibly one of your most striking designs. Tell me, do you imagine the gyro rings hovering statically or rotating? Or the "teeth" holding the timey-wimey globe in the neck basket meshing and unmeshing like a time rotor?

Librarian-bot In reply to Kasterborous [2013-04-25 12:00:23 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I think the Time Controller is one of the best Dalek variants out there, since it works so well with the normal Dalek shape and it does make it look genuinely special, rather than just a normal Dalek with added bits. Full credit to Brian Williamson and Big Finish's cover artists for creating it (even if their CGI cheats appealingly with parts-clash).

I think rather than the teeth moving and the globe staying still, it would be the reverse - a time rotor in negative, with the energy pulsing and shifting outwards from the mechanism: this isn't as advanced and it wouldn't be as controlled. It's Dalek technology: brutal and massively overpowered. I will have to see if I can work out how to render that. Similarly, I don't see the rings as actually rotating (they're not true rings and it's a solid block due to having to shape it around the casing), but rather bolts of light shooting around the edges, leaving blurs behind them - like the thing is acting as a temporal lightning rod. I think, given how the Time Controller is described as operating, it should seem a little wilder than a TARDIS console. It's receiving the vortex rather than pushing through it and that speaks to me of a capacitor that's constantly over-filling and discharging.
