Description
So I broke down and watched Legend, and that same night had a vividly romantic dream about Tim Curry as Darkness. As you do. I can't be the only good girl who has a crush on the devil, can I?I didn't care for the movie aside from Darkness, and was especially put off by the character Lily, so I wondered who would be appropriate to pair with His Evilness. Saint Agape (of Barbucci & Canepa's Sky Doll) just kind of inserted herself, and she's perfect. She's an embodiment of goodness and sacrifice, of sensuality and a pure heart -- and they still have things in common. If Darkness is going to fall in love with someone, I want it to cripple him. I want him to be completely defeated by her. I want him to give in. That's what good love does to you.
I would almost guarantee that these two have never been drawn on the same paper together. I also almost guarantee (less confidently) that this is the last time I'll be drawing Darkness. But I said that about Bowie, so. You never know.

And your reasoning for this...wow! So sweet and genius! This is such an...awe-stricken piece! I don't know what else to say but "bravo!"!

Lovely lovely lovely <3
I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned anything about it sooner, but the original script for Legend was totally different than the final version. It's not surprising that so many people have tapped into the sexual aspects of the movie. Lili (Lily) and the Baron (Darkness) totally get it on in the original.
I have a link to the first script, and if you read some of the interactions between Lili and the Baron, you'll see what I mean: [link]

Wow. I just went and read through that all. I don't know what to make of that first draft. Pretty wild.
You know what I totally didn't get from the movie? I thought that Darkness had actually fallen in love with Lily, that he was telling the truth when he said he would give her his heart and soul and love. I mean, he would be the master of lies, but it's so hard to imagine that someone could be lying when they say something like that.
Which, I mean, just makes me more determined to draw him in love. ;D

The ONLY reasons why I like Legend:
Tim Curry as Darkness
Deep Roy as one of the minions
but I really the work..Darkness needs someone to love and I really like that crown. it's kind of like a claddagh but with a real heart.

Ah, torniness.
See, this is, well, exquisite, as all your drawings, and I can only thumbs up coming up with such a poetic, visually striking and unique idea. Also, I totally approve of the Legend love. That was totally my favourite film when I was, like, 12. And, besides the pretty unicorns sequence (yes... I said that and I'll stand by it. I like the pretteh glittery unicorns!), the love is all due to the kickass villain that is Tim Curry's Darkness. And the dream-dress sequence...
... but therein, see, lies the appeal for me. I'm a sucker for "Mayfly-December" romances and the mortal-immortal dynamic. I like that an ageless, powerful (seductive) creature can fall for a completely normal, brief and beautiful human girl - Sarah, Bella, Lily, who you will. That is the true "devil in love" archetype for me.
Now, I'll agree that Sarah, frex, and totally unobjectively, has oodles more screen presence, willpower and charisma than Princess Lily, and that the latter was not about to bring Darkness to his knees like so. But for me, pairing Darkness with an "equal" power of love and light kills some of the thrill. (And just personally, Agape rubs me the wrong way, oddly enough...)
My tuppence.
Skydoll is love, however.

Ah, well. To each their own heroine. I think mostly I wanted Agape to serve the crowning purpose.
Although... The immortal/mortal love dynamic is such a heartbreak for me, because that's what it inevitably ends in. The saddest part of the LotR movies was the scene in which Arwen imagines a cold and dusty eternity without the man she loves, because she couldn't die. If I want to feel that bad, heck, I'll just go snort a jar of hot mustard.
This was kind of for you, but next time I'll stick with a Sarah-type.

There are some really fascinating texts of Tolkien on the mortal-immortal romance, including the "Alkallebeth" (buried in one of the 'History of M-e' books) which is a musing on said romance from the POV of Finrod - called the Wise, and one of the First Age early super Elves. Really interesting, esp. as it is in the case of his brother (= High Elf) infatuated with a mortal woman. Which never comes to pass in Tolkien's world, his 'successful' pairings being only ever of Man and Elf-woman. (Finrod seems to think that, besides the inevitable heartbreak, there's also some biology issues with a mortal bearing an Eldar child, whose spirits "burns" brighter - strange stuff...).
Funny, actually, how Tolkien is all about a brave mortal loving a demi-goddess, and we were discussing the opposite dynamic...
(Can we say, stories written by a man who married an older woman he madly loved after a lot of trials and against her family's wishes, vs. us young women with a tendency to crush on inaccessible older actors-singers, perhaps...? )
I do agree with you that that "and your grief will be as a grey winter's night that comes without stars" sequence is one of the most moving and true-to-the-book moments in the films.
Heh. What's a little interspecies romance without the AAAAAaaaAaangst?
If this was indeed partly intended for me, than I am v. touched, and sorry to have drizzled on your parade - and thank you!

Pish AND tush -- you never drizzle. And I was thinking specifically of you, as you were the only person I knew with a fondness for Darkness. And any time I do fantasy-type stuff, I think of you anyway. I know you're kind of a born romantic, too.
Hoo boy, all that Tolkien stuff gives me a headache in my eyeball... *twitch* I think I follow you. (All I can hear in my head is Elrond putting on a jive accent and saying to Aragorn, "You got elf fever, boi!")

This is one of those films everyone recommends upon hearing I like Labyrinth - my sister's now-husband gave me "Legend" on DVD for my birthday, saying, "Oh man, you're totally going to love this." Watching, I had to ask myself, "What rocks was he smoking, and where can I obtain them?" As the film progressed, I wondered the same thing about its creators. Oh man...
Spritely Tom Cruise: epic fail.
(Inappropriately-sexy Tim Curry is the film's saving grace.)

I knew even from the thumbnail what this was meant to be. One is not likely to forget Tim Curry in that role. It's a very special movie--by far the most sparkly I have ever seen and I am a fan of 80's fantasy movies and glam rock flicks. The whole movie looks like some sort of allergy commercial because of all the glitter and feathers remnants floating in the air, and who could forget the music by Tangerine Dream or Tom Cruise flying around in this outfit? [link]
Good times. Anyway, nice drawing, you really captured him.

For some reason I felt the urge to play "Boyfriend" by The Moldy Peaches while looking at this.

Great job as always love!

I sometimes wish DA would have an option to.. fave more than once, just to show the appreciation to the piece.
This piece is really beautiful.
A few days ago you posted something that got banned, where you mentioned Sky Doll.
I fell in love with that piece, and i was intrigued by Barbucci and Canepa... so i googled them and searched the book in emule.
Never found it in emule, but i did in Amazon.
Time passed, but i was still intrigued by Sky Doll, so when i ordered another book, i decided to give Sky Doll a chance.
I just got it yesterday, and devoured it instantly!
I'm so glad you talked about it. I take it almost like a chain of events, all connected.
Oh, and i love Legend too, i watch it whenever i can... and yeap, i admit on looooving Darkness too
I guess Lily seems inappropriate as the essence of Innocence because she's really selfish and always gets in trouble. I don't know if i would have made the character just like that, but i think it's an aspect of innocence. I think it's the innocence of a child, not meassuring the consecuenses of their actions, and being quite selfish and irracional.
And i think Lily was portrayed that way because, if she fell in love with Darkness, HE would corrupt HER. It wouldn't be the kind of love that defeats him completely, it would be the other way around. SHE would be defeated, and so, morally bad.
Agape would CERTAINLY cripple him, it's the exact opposite of him.
Anyways, i just wanted to say, firstly, thank you for mentioning Sky Doll, i'm very happy i've bought it.
Secondly, i always look and fave what you post, but not comment. It's just that sometimes i don't know what to say that others haven't said already. Just.. well, i value your art, not only because it's good, but because it has a depth that it's not easy to find.
And lastly, i'm really happy you decided to draw something Legend related (by the way, someone already mentioned the lack of Agape's tail, but wouldn't she also have those weird ears shown in the Sky Doll universe? I only read Sky Doll once, and i checked a bit to be sure, but i couldn't find an image of Agape without her hair covering her ears. ... Anyways.. just a thought).
Ok, that's it, longish
Take care,

You know what, about her tail and ears... I actually gave the Sky Doll books back to my sister, so I didn't have them at my disposal to reference-check. I knew I was leaving out her tail just for aesthetic sake, but I totally forgot about their ears!
I'm really glad you dig Sky Doll -- it's a fascinating story to me, and I get really into that whole religious hierarchy thing. I like that Agape is more like a Jesus figure, in her suffering and her beauty and her sadness. Know what I mean?
And thanks for always watching, even if you don't comment. That's good to know, good to hear.

I like that Agape is the embodiment of all that's holy and sacred and true, yet Lodovica is the one that's chosen.
I think Sky Doll tries to show us the incongruence in our society, and how we fall pray to tricks much like Lodovica's
Anyways, i'm glad i heard about this comic, and i'm glad i heard it from you.
And, about comments... well, i won't always comment, but i'm a lurker, i'm there
Take care,

Yeah, i know what you mean. I like that Agape is the beauty, the sacred, the pious, but actually Lodovica is the accepted one. I like that the corrupted, the flesh is chosen. I think Sky Doll tries to show us the incongruence in our current society, and how we fall pray to tricks much like Lodovica's
But anyways, i'm glad i've heard about this comic, and i'm glad i heard it from you.

I'm absolutly sure, that Kuja (the female-looking villain) and Eiko (the little noisy six-year-old child) are the perfect couple...^_^ And I adore the pairing Kurai/Lucifer (from Angel Sanctuary)... Or, do you know the japanese anime reideen (don't think so, it was not very famous)? I think I'm the only person in the world who would think of Louche(again, the super-big villain) and Ruri (innocent girl, turned into bad by him and regretting it for the rest of her life) as a couple...
Your picture remembers me a lot of them. I love these kind of unusual pairings
By the way, I've just seen you Gorillaz fanarts! They're fantastic! So adorable!
