Ah, well, I'd say do a bit of research. Fish have different sort of scales than snakes and the like. It's always good to get a few reference photos, though.

That's just the easiest way I find to do scales. It's a bitch to have to go back and try to erase the guidelines unless you ink your drawing or make sure you shade over them.

Alligators? That seems a little tough... Do alligators even have scales? I thought they just have really rough skin... I mean, I know they do on their underbelly, so I guess they must.
