No offense, but these wings aren't the least bit realistic. They're entirely incapable of flight.

Wow, this is actually how I do it, just the 'thumb' faces the way the other fingers do.
Hm.

Thanks so much for this, been looking for ages for a tutorial like this, even though i was trying to draw the wing folded against the characters back (it's incredibly difficult to get example of that) it was still very helpful with the general structure of the wings.

You are epic! I am a 14 year old artist, and sometimes I have difficulties focusing on my drawings and practices and such. I am making a demon for a few friends of mine, and I have everything but the wings. Now I have the wings and everything! I can't wait until I get to go to an Art Institute. I just need some help!

I found a similar tutorial (like basically the same wings with a different thumb and a missing "finger" from the elbows)but its less in depth... the link? [link]

Nice tutorial, but you might want to point out that what you're teaching here is a fantasy wing for made up creatures, different from actual bat wings.
Real bat wings have no finger at the elbow, and the end finger is actually made up of two seperate fingers kind of merged together: [link]

Thanks alot. This and your angel wing tutorial is going to help me alot when I redo one of my pics. The shading is going to kill me though. I'll be sure to thank you when I finish it.

thanx for the tips bud, it's definitely helped me with my demons and works just as well with dragon wings. i'm just a beginner at this stage, so this would probably result in some decent future drawings. btw, do you know of any scaled wing tutorials??

raerae In reply to jo-burger [2007-09-16 13:46:22 +0000 UTC]
Scaled wings? Not off the top of my head. Usually the way I do it is draw scales to follow the muscle. Scales are smaller where the muscles and joints move. I suggest looking at, lizard legs and such.

Dude. Do you realize what you've just done?
You've...
A: Made me refine my drawing style. (lighter lines, detailed shading later)
B: Made me again, refine my arm shape >_>
And C: I hope, at least, that you've made me a sight damn better drawer.
For this, you win the internets.
(note: see deviant soon-to-be uploaded for results of your tutorial. : D Probably tonight.)
