Description
Why yes, I have been listening to 7 different covers of bloody tears while drawing this. How could you tell?
Ok jokes aside, this is drawing was inspired by a concept presented by a much more talented artist, and, out of respect for the creator and his work I debated if I should post this or if I should keep it for myself.
However the entire reason I decided to start this account was to explore and express my creativity, and throw to the side a drawing that has took me several hours to make as an homage to a creative concept that I believe has a lot of potential, is just dumb.
Besides, I can always delete the post if it bothers anyone.
Now naturally I will mention the original creator and give some context to the story, not all of course as the author already has 4 YouTube Video covering different aspects of the concept.
I should also warn anyone possibly interested that there are a lot of LGBTQ characters, personally I believe the author has implemented this aspect well, as it’s not their entire personality or at least has some backstory relevance, and most importantly it fits with what’s the story focuses on: the characters journey to understand themselves and their potential.
Now that I’ve awkwardly put numerous hands forward, and made myself look like a complete lunatic I believe I can give a bit of context.
The concept is called “Heartless” and the plot moves around the protagonist of the same name after he wakes up as an undead, with no memory of what previously happened to them and determined to solve the mystery behind their existence they’ll start working at an odd job store picking up friends during his journeys.
This is a universe which can be very hard to explain, as it’s a brand of fantasy that I can’t fully describe.
In short it’s a pretty unique setting that gives a lot of possible scenarios and interesting characters.
In this world certain people are born with a certain magic energy that is unique to them, unfortunately these people are often seen as dangerous due to some tragedy that happened many years ago.
From then on many witch hunters have took upon themselves the responsibility of cleansing the world of magic.
The current ones, known as “The Jury”, is taking things to the next level slowly gaining more influence across the various kingdoms.
However those who were born with magic has started to respond to this persecution, making a kingdom of their own under the guidance of “The Magistratum”, sending spies to save innocent magic users, and trying to help their reputation by imprisoning magical criminals.
Now, after all off this context, I can talk about this character.
First of all, if you are interested in this project you will notice that every character has a distinctive color palette that lets them stand out, usually involving black or white when talking about the main heroes and the main villains.
Being a third party character, I thought it would be fitting to give this guy the color grey, representing his opposition to both the villains and the heroes.
For the details I used a mix of three different colors that ended up turning really cool in my opinion: Purple, English Red and Rosewood.
The mask was inspired by the ones used by the French firefighters during WW1, which has a really interesting design, besides I think is a nice alternative to the plague Doctor masks used by the witch hunters to show this guy’s detachment from them.
Originally their design was supposed to be more similar to the main character of the game Blasphemous ( which you should definitely check out), but it didn’t really fit his story, so I simply kept the pointy hat has an homage to that design idea.
Why does he wears suspenders even though he has a belt?
Beats me, but they certainly make him stand out.
So who is this guy?
This is Buntley Silverstake, a witch Hunter that does not associate with the Jury, in fact he often thwarts their plans, but as a witch hunter he’s also feared by the Magistratum, which deemed him an high level threat to agents on the field. The guy has some serious Handsome Jack complex, believing himself to be the last true witch hunter, but his motivation for doing what it does aren’t completely malevolent in nature.
He doesn’t hunt magic users out of spite, but out of pity, seeing them as cursed beings that are a danger to themselves and to those around them.
He probably started to see the world this way after a loved one that could use magic lost control of their powers and ended up killing themselves and others.
Buntley doesn’t have a magic ability, but he has two powerful artifacts on himself to help him in his hunt: a silver stake and the “Magic Cage Flail”.
The stake is an artifact that can absorb the magical energy from a person, naturally killing them in the process, while the flail can receive the magical energy from the stake to accumulate wild magic that manifests itself as spectral purple flames emitting silver embers.
Being “wild magic” these flames effect everyone around them, including Buntley and unfortunate bystanders, so he rarely uses the flail in this mode unless is absolutely necessary.
He also has a lot of other little gadgets, helping him against various types of magical enemies, such as a gas mask, enchanted bullets, smoke bombs ecc…, but he’s most impressive one out of all of them are certainly his roller blade boots.
Those little things on the back of his feet are in fact little wheels that he uses to move around faster and perform some impressive maneuvers when combined with his flail.
I imagine him being quite old, explaining his vast knowledge and experience regarding witch hunting and has an icon engraved on his belt and his silver cap representing an heart being pierced by an arrow.
I just imagine him talk in a pompous and refined way, as a visual example just imagine Morgot from Elden Ring, that kind of pompous and menacing speech is definitely what he’ll be using.
Since the protagonists are on a journey to discover themselves, I think it would be interesting for this character to explore the Pirandellian concept of losing one’s self.
Unlike the protagonist, who needs to find up who he is, Buntley Silverstake is a character that has a clear vision of who he is, and his character progression will be him realizing that perhaps magic users aren’t creatures to be pitied, but human with a particular quirk to them.
So instead of finding himself, perhaps he’ll end up doubting the image that he has crafted around his identity, slowly starting to respect the protagonists more and more, although I think his vision of magic as a hall would never fully change and will always partially believe that even if the Magistratum has good intentions they are still playing with fire by grouping so many magic users together in one place.
Naturally all of this is nothing but a fan made entry and has nothing to do with the original work, so as I believe that those who like my stuff are all mature and open minded people, I suggest you check it out, and even if it doesn’t interest you, I hope you at least like the design I came up with.
