Description
This piece is my tribute to a great game called Limbo. I suspect there is a story behind the sister's journey and I wanted to do something to try and capture the feel of the game and what might have happened with her. This piece was a real challenge. For those that haven't figured it out, this scene is actually a 3D render. I tried to guess what the game was doing and then replicate those operations in the Megapov render engine.
If anyone wants to see the scene mesh, it's here.

I don't know if anyone else will like it, but I am really happy with how this turned out.

Wow! From the thumbnail, I thought to myself,... "that sure looks like Limbo.." and how amazing to see that it was, in fact, the influence for this great piece of art.

Truly impressive! I love the way you have the foreground in focus and the background out of focus as you go further back. It does give a great 3d look to it.
I did something along those lines once by creating an oil painting look in the background and keeping the subject in focus for a kind of "person in an oil painting" look. But you have done something I had not thought of. I will have to try out that technique when I photoshop some future work.

Looks awesome, ser Must say, the minimalist/minimalizing approach sometimes yields cooler results than realistic

Wow I really liked the sister in the game and was always curious why she was alone and okay despite what the boy does to find her in such a horrible place.
This is really well drawn and truly is a tribute to Limbo, the surreal and abstractness of the game (which translates well to your drawing) is amazing ^^

WOWEE! What an INSANE challenge! I can guess some...DOF and Z-axis volumetrics (Games like Quake and others LOVE that!). Beyond that I am clueless! If you have global controls over material and color, you could turn every thing the same diffuse color to mimic a black and white picture...
ANYWAY--it's DYNAMITE! The monochrome image is powerful and evocative. You and MegaPOV continue to produce jaw dropping art that REALLY pushes the 3D CGI genre.
Dude, I'm in awe and really proud of you!

Ahhh... the piece you are missing is scaling the objects in the background. I flattened them to about 5% of their normal thickness and built the scene in planes using the flattened parts. I suspect the game is doing something similar, but have no idea if it is really. This allowed me to use materials to get the highlights on some objects and not others.
I would have rendered this in Firefly, but as you guessed, the volumetric/atmospheric effects would have been difficult to impossible in that tool.
Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Loved it!
Firefly? NOT REALLY! I learned that Z-AXIS volumetric render in a snap becuase they aren't really volumetric!
Just looked on Renderosity for Bagginsbill's explanation and of course. CAN'T FIND IT! Damn Rendo's lame-ass search function! I need to find it and can't find diddly. It had some demo shots of various kinds of volumetric atmosphere renders.
Z-axis "volumetric atmospherics" is exactly what the Quake engine uses in real time. It's all fake, but looks real. In side-by-side renders you can see the difference, but I can't explain it because I have NO clue how it works.
