Description The scroll had proved right after all. One can never be sure when buying discount "treasure" maps from those claiming to be in need. The ruins of the obelisks appeared over the horizon., burning in the brutal desert sun. They stand as a testament to the ancient age that built them.

A closer approach revealed that forest wild flowers surround an obelisk unravaged by time while the fossilized remains of others plants scattered the ground near the ruined sisters. Wild flowers found in temperate forests present in the desert? Why do pieces of the ruins still float about their parents? The obelisks still hold many secrets.

Render Notes:

Wow, I’m happy to be done with this one.

Meshes:
The obelisks are completely original 3D meshes. It is not real apparent, but there are several, subtle, custom terrain meshes around the obelisks and in the desert background. There are two cloth simulations on the main character. The model is DAZ’s Steph Petite. I wanted a change from the ubiquitous Victoria 3. The armor has pieces mixed in from ISOP and DAZ. Don’t ask where the plants came from. I have been collecting them from various places on the Internet over the last couple of years.

Textures:
The stone textures are a custom creation. I spent a lot of time trying to get something that actually looked like and older stone. Several textures had to be created for the fossilized plants and also the transition between the mossy area and desert areas around the obelisks. The cloth textures were also created for this scene.

Lighting:
Lighting was very difficult as I was trying to mimic the harsh light of the desert without washing out everything in the scene.

Special Effects:
The “aura” around the character was created using Povray’s media capabilities. Tuning that parameters to give the glowing effect took quite some time. The scene also makes use of multiple layers of Povray’s fog.

Render Time:
This scene took roughly 3 days to render on an AMD64 class machine.

Postwork:
None, Nada, Zip. (Ok, I resized the image from the original 1920x1440 size…)
