Description
What do you do on an Easter holiday when it is too bloody cold to do anything outside? You finish that hair model you have been working on... (OK! I really need a life!)This whole project came about from a discussion with about trying to model long flowing hair for 3D work. I was looking for something to learn how to use the wings3D program, so I decided to tackle it for fun. I've got to say... I really like wings3D.
The image on the left is how the final hair mesh looks in wings3D. The image on the right is the model imported into poser. The image on the right has morph targets added through the use of magnet deformers.
The hair was modeled after takumy's character. (Sorry Takumy, I know the hair should be black, but I needed to be able to see the details.
Before I get an onslaught of questions about making this model available for download, the answer is yes. I will be releasing it as a freebie. However.... I get to use it first!

Uhg....
Animedoll isn't setup for realistic renders. There have been several requests to UV map this hair and adapt it to the Aiko3 character. If I did that, I could do a realistic render. Talk about extra work though....... UV mapping can be a real nightmare. Sad... I can make a model of hair from scratch in a day, but UV mapping it scares the crap out of me.....
Would you have any objections if I call the final model Takumy hair?

Sorry, I didn't understand the original question. I just created the model. I haven't had a chance to do anything serious with it yet.

Damn--you sure kicked my ass with this! At this point of use, I had just made a goofy looking chair. LOL Go and kick some more, then! Looks great! I have yet to do hair.

The really cool thing about this project is that I actually got 2 hair models out of this. I saved off a short hair with long bangs version along the way.

Along with Crystal Blue above, I've had my share of annoyance with Hexagon. I'll probably be learning how to model in Maya (I'm taking an elective at school for 3D modeling sometime in the next year). I'm glad to hear your views on Wings 3D and Povray as so positive.

I missed Hexagon back when it was on sale. I always wondered if that was a mistake. Listening to everyone talk about makes me feel better about not picking it up.
I still haven't tried out Maya. I can't dish out the $$$ for it. I know there is a free version, but I have this thing for supporting the effort people are putting into the free tools out there.

Yeah. I agree, its good to support the little guy And I hear Maya is complicated! Its available at my school, so I'll be learning/using it there. It is horrendously expensive (I've priced it -- ouch!).
Btw thanks for the fave on the Crystal Ball

The morphs look quite good! ^_^ The mesh looks clean enough to allow for some good hair textures. Any plans on UV mapping it?

I wasn't planning on UV mapping it. (the pain... THE PAIN!.... ) but I keep wondering what it would look like with a "real" hair texture applied....

UV mapping may be a pain, but it makes hair props much more versatile, especially with transparency maps. ^^

super!
i've been wanting to try something like that. i've been using hexagon to model clothes. hex is a bit unstable, especially if the model has any inconsistencies.
i've tried hair a couple of times and keep giving up. i'm try for real looking anime styled hair (if that makes any sense)

Hmmm... if you are looking for "real" anime hair, Mitsu hair over at DAZ3D is the best one I have come across. I was lucky enough to pick it up when it was on sale.

have it (i suspect, the same sale - love it). for all the hair models i have, i just don't have one that meets my requirements. i want a hair like Aspen (in fathom) has and another like Witchblade. both are swept back from the temples, have medium volume; although Apens is usually "wet" and Witchblade's is usually all over the place

Wings 3D is a program that can be used to create 3D models for use in other tools like Poser, 3DSMax, Maya, etc.. It works by allowing the user to subdivide a starting object and doing operations on the little pieces. This hair model started as a ball. (Doesn't look much like one now, but if you think about it, the top of the human head is a ball shape. )
The cel shading in this picture is the cartoon/wLines preview mode of poser. It works ok, but has some real problems with doing more advanced cel shading work. I have written a couple of tutorials on doing cel shading. [link] and [link]
