Description This is a 3D-modeling work in progress, but I thought I would share part of the progress. The scene is rendered as a Cel-Render.

The work I was doing on the 3D character I was creating came to a halt when I couldn't figure out what direction to take her. Then Engel-of-the-Wired did this piece [link] for me. I was looking for an outfit to create for the character and the one Engel did looked like the challenge I was wanting to take on.

All the models in this scene were created in wings3D.

The hair is just a place holder for now. I haven't got around to making new hair.

I am happy with how the top and wings have turned out. However I have started 2 skirts and scrapped them both, as each one looked like a cupcake wrapper (*sigh*). I'll get it figured out eventually..... I've still got a lot of work to do.

:3 pleated skirts are baiscaly a cup cake wraper. Maybe try making the skirt the way you did and just bring the outer edges towards eachother in a spiral type thingy.and at the top of the skirt add a solid band.

The band is missing from the top because it is not present in the original character design. I am assuming it is below the poofy fluffs at the top. (I wanted to add it, but none of Miza's reference drawings have it).

My problem with the cupcake design it that it looks like a cupcake. My first two skirts did a great job of that......

Oh wait... we are not talking about the image I thought we were. There is a later image here [link] I've done some more work on the skirt since the second image was posted. There was a lot of structure to the skirt, but it all disappeared when I rendered it. So I exaggerated it more in an attempt to correct the problem. Skirts an me are not getting along....

oh wow cool, the wing is way cooler than mine XD
haa, that is so neat I can't wait to see it when it is finished!

The only thing I can suggest is maybe the blue is a bit too saturated? otherwise it is awesome!!

I haven't set the final colors yet.

I plan on sampling them from the image you did. (If that is ok with you?)
I'm having a lot of trouble visualizing the skirt. Can you give a better description of what it should look like?

I'll see if I can whip up a character sheet... But I dunno if I can because my drawing ability is horribly inconsistent ^^
sampling is fine, lol

Looking very nice! I particularly like the wings

The wings were particularly difficult. That little spiral at the base drove me insane! I am always surprised how some things that are so simple to draw are just a nightmare to model in 3D. But I also like how the wings turned out.

Wow you modeled everything in the scene?

Yep. Everything. I'm not happy with the hair... so back to the drawing board on that one... I'm not looking forward to slicing and dicing the outfit for posing....

If you you took the time to rig the figure, making the outfit conforming is slightly less work but nontheless, work of the very same nature. ^^

The figure is mostly rigged. I still have some work to do on the fingers. I'm not quite happy with the left/right buttocks and the shoulders still need some work.
I am a little worried that the outfit is to tight and I'm going to have a lot of problems with pokethru. Oh well... all part of the learning....

Here are some hints from my personal experience:

1. Ball-joints (shoulders, buttocks) are **ALWAYS** a pain to adjust. Other joints are easier.
2. Rigging hands is a pain - not because of the joints but because of their number (3 for every finger, and in 3 axis).
3. Tight outfits should be left some extra distance from the body to avoid pokethrus.
4. Save *often* when rigging with Poser's Setup Room - it is quite unstable!!

I think character/clothing rigging is more like an exercise of *patience* because it is more tedious than difficult.

I actually have most of the hands done. I just need to adjust the falloff zones for all the 1 joints. I get "crosstalk" between the fingers sometimes. I'm learning really quickly that there is no perfect way to set the joints. It is just a matter of working with them to get the best or most acceptable range of motion. I also need to fix some of the geometry on the back of the shoulders. Low poly count there is severely affecting the back when the collars are moved forward.

I've already learned about the save often part.

There used to be a bug with Poser Setup Room and every time I clicked at a certain finger Poser would promptly and gladly freeze on me. I was trying to rig a pair of gloves and it took me ages to get it finished! LOL

Oh yes, Poser doesn't like low poly very much - especially if you want your models to bend smoothly. I've learned this when I created a number of low poly figures for Poser (one of them got a DD here at dA) and they don't bend very well at ball joints. They are great for celshaded animations, though, where most details are hidden by the shader.

It's always impressive to see someone's line-art take three dimensional form. I'm so glad I introduced you to Wings3d! I feel like the "some fellow" who introduced Michaelangelo to fresco! Wow! Great work!

I really do have to thank you. I am getting much better with the tool. I did a skirt, stockings, and shoes all in one evening. A few months ago I was struggling with just the basic stuff.

Your development as a modeler is thanks enough to me. You are more than welcome! I just get a real enjoyment from helping people out when a need arises. It's more rewarding than almost anything. Just pay it forward to some other person needing help. ^__^V,, We can't save the world, but can help where we can!
