Description
Have you spread some Random Love today?TMNOTE!
This Greasemonkey Script is Obsolete as of deviantART v6's Release
You can now use deviantART's native Random Love-ish buttons using the following steps:
DescriptionThis script adds two buttons to the Main Toolbar. One which directs you to a Random Deviant and the other to a Random Deviation (using the inbuilt dA Random Link as shown at FAQ #535: Can I search for a random Deviant/Deviation? ).
TRY AND MAKE deviantART A BETTER PLACE
I have added a thread in the Suggestion Forum here to try and appeal to the powers-that-be to consider incorporating user creations, like this script, into the deviantART website itself, rather than relying on userscripts. Please visit the thread and lend your voice to this appeal.
Share The Love! - Get outside your comfort zone, find new friends, discover new art, explore the dA Community.
Want to Discover Unknown & Unrecognised Artists? - Check out DeviouslyArtistic.com a dA-related project by °jark and a number of other dedicated deviants.
Version History0.2 - Now dAv5-friendly!
0.1 - Initial Release
InstructionsIf you are experienced at all this, then just access the version you want from the links above in the "Version History" Section.
- Get Firefox (If you haven't got it already)
- Install it, of course.
- Get the GreaseMonkey Extension
- Restart Firefox (to Initialise the Extension)
- Click HERE and select "Install"
- Enjoy!

This would be a great idea if it were made available to everyone!

I would love for this to be available to everyone.
Just a matter of having the dA Adminitrator add the code into the script which makes the toolbar.
But, I am not the Administrator...

Now this is a great idea! This will sure help the unknown artists feel more welcome here, because everyone has been there, and we know just what its like. Congrats on the DD, and im glad this made it!

Thanks! Too often in communities like this one, you get virtual goat-trails - a network of well-known artists gets established and get the majority of the traffic, whereas new, equally interesting, artists arrive but, being on the outside of the loop, tend to be overlooked. Hopefully this creates a level playing field in that respect...
Thanks, I was surprised by the DD, but it, and the attention, is very much appreciated.

I admit that much more into the browse button than the random buttons, but this is an excellent add to the button bar!
And it's never enough to spread devious love...
Congratulations on such a well deserved DD!

I hope that the Random buttons become one of your more often used buttons here at dA...
Everyone needs a bit of "Random Love" every now and then.

I LOVE random-buttons!
It's a shame that only a few communitys got them.

Well, whichever communities don't have random buttons should be asked, hounded and harrassed until they do.

A spectacular idea!
So why hasn't DA itself implemented these buttons in the core design?

One or two less clicks can add up to alot of time when you're doing it a hundred times a day.
Plus this way it's alot more obvious to newer members, like myself - encouraging us to use it more often.

Fantasic idea!
I would install this... but I'm on my dad's computer and I don't think he'd appreciate me downloading anything without his knowledge!
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Lucanos In reply to DarthTella [2006-03-16 19:09:59 +0000 UTC]
It's a very limited script - only affects deviantART.
In fact, you probably download more in just looking at pics than you would with downloading the items listed above...
But, that being said, I can appreciate and understand that you don't want to mess with someone else's computer.

this is a wonderful idea. i'd love to use it, but... um. er. i am on a mac, using safari, and my brain simply refuses to cooperate with me. will i be able to use this on m'mac?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Lucanos In reply to scrotumnose [2006-03-16 19:08:23 +0000 UTC]
It can be used on a Mac (as far as I can tell). I don't think Safari supports UserScripts (too sleep-deprived to research that too much), but if you use Firefox (which is available in Mac & PC versions) as per the above instructions, it should behave itself for you.
If not, let me know and I'll get out the whip!

I'm sure your son will be able to show you.
It really is pretty funky in that you always see something new using the random function... Unless you have already seen all 19,000,000 deviations...
Thanks for your comment, I appreciate it.

Lucanos In reply to KeCHi [2006-03-16 19:03:46 +0000 UTC]
Even if the powers-that-be haven't seen it yet, it just means that we have more time to spread the word ourselves.
The more users doing this, the better.
(I was tempted to try and tag these buttons so that people using them would generate distinct logs for the deviantART website, but I don't know whether they will be looking all that closely to the logs of a site this busy... Might have to re-think that option at a late stage...)

Lucanos In reply to LarsMaresca [2006-03-15 12:14:29 +0000 UTC]
Hey Lars,
Thanks for your comment!
With regards to the wierd result for where the random deviation button goes - I would assume that's a problem in the randomising script dA has on their server.
It could be patched from this end (ie have the script go to another random deviation when it senses that it has been loaded on that ghosted location), but that wouldn't be the cleanest solution possible.
Best trick? Submit a bug report for it and see if dA can fix it.
