Do you think I can apply the same concepts in Paint Shop Pro?

Yup. To darken go to "Automatic Contrast Enhancement." To select, Select All and then do Selections>>Select by Color Range and Subtract white. Play around with the tolerance and softness settings. Then promote the selection to a layer, and delete the bottom layer.

That's how I do it anyway. In PSP8.

awesome. this would be very useful if I had photoshop.

what do you use to line your artwork? something like a sharpie? or...?

That's an interesting new-layer lineart technique...I tried it, though, and it left my lines too grainy. You probably already know this, actually, but you can get a perfectly smooth copy of your lineart, minus the white background, using channels.

My PS either doesn't have the Color Range thing, or I'm just not looking hard enough. Help?

Thanks for the part about how to blur the lines to make them cleaner. I have a huge problem with that cuz I used to just make my images smaller to take the sharpness out but now I can keep them full size and not have to scan at such a high resolution. Really nice tutorial!

I tried the Select>Color Range with one of my lineart scanned in (400dpi), but it doesn't work for some reason The message reads: "Warning: No pixles are more than 50% selected. The selection edges will not be visible." However, I did try the duplication method set to Gaussy-blur 1.7 and hard light, and it looks much more appealing to me right now. So thanks for the tip!

But would you have any idea why the select color range with the whole image didn't work? I'm a bit puzzled about it... Does the size matter over it?

Hmmm, I don't use it that much- but I really don't think size matters. Have you tried making sure the layer is selected? perhaps use the Select all option as well?

MiraKHall In reply to luniara [2006-06-01 05:13:07 +0000 UTC]

Well, NOW it seems to work in my other documents, but I don't wanna use something that's unreliable like that. Like I said; I found a method through your tut that I liked with better results (to mine eyes at least), so I'm happy now. Thanks, anyway

I'll have to make a tutorial for this. I know an easier way that produces far better results.

That actually helps so much better than the technique I was using of simply and carefully erasing around the lines and blurring it.

Much thanks and love, Luniara-chan!
