Description
My favorite fishie <3Arapaima are the largest fish in South America, can grow to true beast-like sizes. The River Monsters episode featuring the arapaima made me tingle <3
Back when I started this piece it was all in a fury, I've since taken a class that covers fish anatomy, mostly skeletal, so its not perfect. I'm sure before long I will do another illustration similar to this.
11"x14", ink, watercolours and acrylics.

my personal favorite freshwater monster is from the Mekong basin, called the giant whip tailed ray. isn't it magnificent and frightening?

Yesssss I love those! When I started my obsession with Arapaimas, my boyfriend suggested I watch a few episodes of River Monsters, one of my favorite episodes featured the giant whip-tailed ray. They're terrifying, and amazing! <3

Awesome work! I really like the skeletonal part of it the most. I have a few photos on my wall of their bones because they are so interesting! Even the anal/dorsal fins have intricate bones! No wonder these guys are built so sturdy. If you are able to see one in real life, do it! I cannot put into words how amazing they are. I spent a straight hour just sketching and drawing the one in the National Zoo of D.C. Even the baby ones in our local petshop are so cool.
Since you are in Canada, there is an aquarium in Vancover that houses one.Β www.vanaqua.org/learn/aquafactβ¦
I would love to take a class in fish anatomy. Where did you find something like that? I don't think anywhere local to me has a class on fish.

I first fell in love with them when I saw them at an aquarium in Las Vegas, those were only over a meter long, I can't imagine the thrill/terror of seeing a larger one. They have such a presence, I wish I had the opportunity to observe them more.
My university has a Chordates class, a large portion of the lab was dedicated to fish. I may have the chance to take an advanced biology of fish class if I can squeeze it into my schedule.

I know, I think big fish can be a bit intimidating but there's something truly intimidating and awe inspiring when it's fresh water instead of a salt water, dunno why. they're eerily wonderful, maybe because they harken back to an older age?

Agreed! Large freshwater fish chill me to the bone because its as if they shouldn't be that big. They're wonderful! <3

such a gorgeous animal <3 and an even more gorgeous picture of it! I love how the pinkish hues in the flowers bring out the red in the tail and body more~ and the textures in this are just wonderful!

Ah thank you! I think they're beautiful, both their fleshed and their skeletal form.
