Like the root system of a pot bound plant - conforms to the shape of the container and escapes through the drainage holes. Excellent!

this is ridiculously rad... like organic knotted energy.

It is very pleasing. The result seems like a strange blending of organic and geometric forms.

thanks! and yeah that's pretty much exactly how it's made

I notice go amongst your interests. Is that as in: board, stones?

as in the only thing other than mathematics which poses a sublime perfection and timeless beauty, yes

Yes yes.
Do you find any artistic inspiration in it?

lyc In reply to GravityLens [2009-08-20 12:13:02 +0000 UTC]
hmm, i don't really regard myself as an artist but rather an art appreciator, since i mostly make technically good pictures of beautiful things that already exist. i'm getting better at it, so it's definitely a skill, but increasingly it appears to be a different thing from true artistic vision.
having said that, there's of course a lifetime's worth of inspiration to be found in the game; philosophically it's a microcosm of life - one can learn many of its lessons through playing go but somehow i've not taken any artistic cues from it (yet). that's certainly worth pondering, i'll be sure to give it a think on the bus tomorrow
please feel free to share your interpretations!

I suppose this isn't really a forum for go, but I am an enthusiast myself and I agree with all you said.
I am of the opinion that it takes artistry and craftsmanship to produce works of enduring value. Would the old masters be so well regarded if they had been technically weak?
I haven't really made use of go artistically either though the lines and circles are such basic forms they appear everywhere. (I see black and white stones in this piece).

interesting! would like to see the formula for that one

lyc In reply to grumble [2009-05-09 10:18:52 +0000 UTC]
oh, it's long lost i'm afraid; but i can say, it was based off apolonian circle inversions, mixed with euhm other stuff... that basic formula will give you lots of results like this

Very intriguing design. It makes me think of two trees that grew togethor. Very nice piece

appreciated unfortunately i've lost the parameters to my program which produced this, otherwise i'd offer you an exe to play around with
thx for the watch also! lately i've only been releasing stuff to my scraps though, very few polished works and lots of test-programming...

That is too bad about the parameters... But oh well
Concerning the watch, judging from your pieces I could stand to learn a lot from what you do, and I also like what you have already done, so it's really my pleasure

best way to find out about the stuff is to ask, cuz usually i don't spam technical details here and i anyway teach a lot of coding stuff online. hell this is deviantart, not deviantcode

lol good point. Actually, I was going to note you, but wasn't quite sure what really to ask. When you say "teach a lot of coding stuff online", do you mean formerly as in a class, or as in chat/e-mail assistance?

lyc In reply to talin4 [2007-12-08 09:19:42 +0000 UTC]
i used to teach formally, at school as extra classes and later outside of school for schoolgoers, but now just online to my little cult of graphics coding zombies. lol.

Cool. When I actually know some sort of coding, I'll have to join the cult

thankye when i'm in new zealand i can put the huuuge fullsize version online again, it's way more detailed and good for printing.

fankye it's been a while since i've worked on my 2d fractal programs (3d ones getting all the attention lately), maybe it's time for a return...

thanks actually it was really quick to render (i'm using my own program), and i have a higher resolution version here if you're interested: [link]

hey how did you do that? what's the maths?
the non-maths whisper "nice" in my brain, so my hand is sent a nervous impulse and the mouse clicks on "fav"

thanks for the fav! of course besides the fractal iteration there's also plenty maths in the various rendering aspects btw, that's raw output

no, I don't see it.. how many circles did you invert? or did you invert not only circles?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
lyc In reply to ravenwinter [2006-12-09 16:37:03 +0000 UTC]
i only inverted in 4 circles for that image if i recall correctly (i have a key that makes random symmetric locations for the circles), but the "organic" look comes from making small distortions to the point; it's just an iterated function system randomly choosing between 4 circle inversions and a little perturbation function.
