Awesome tutorial, thank you very much!
If you don't mind me asking, how did you get the color effects? Did you just use a normal brush on a normal layer? I tried putting a multi color gradient on a new layerΒ and messing around with the blending mode, but the clouds stayed a solid black, so it looked really bad...

hey,
try using hue/saturation adjustments and brushing on a new layer with color on color or overlay blending mode. It all depends on the base picture, you need to experiment to get good results Good luck!

This is an awesome tutorial! extremely helpful.. Porblem is my space background making skills suck.. I don't get how you made the backgrounds in the examples.. tried experimenting they turn out no good

i made them exactly like explained in the tutorial - inverted cloud image over the starfield or something like that, show me your results, maybe i can help you

Well yesterday I didn't know how to colour my space background yet and I used google images.. Today I learnt it and then used my own cloud photos and experimented a little and ended up with [link] which I think looks cool just the fact that there's a lot of clouds..

MacRebisz In reply to BenSow [2011-10-21 17:29:35 +0000 UTC]
looks nice, add some stars and overlay more cloud images to make small clouds of dark gas in the foreground, that would give a lot more depth to the image.

Okay thanks, should I add them at the existing clouds or in between them?

Hi, can I ask a few questions? How to u brush in highlights? Also, how do u add variation to the background? (Like whitish cloudy thingies, as seen from your second finished work (blue one)) Thanks!

And why on earth had I never considered using my own pictures of clouds?!?!?!
I had always avoided the other methods because I didn't like the idea of using stocks. Using stocks makes me feel like it's not my own work.
Haha who knows why I had never considered that!
Wonderful tut

i love this idea but its kinda hard to follow on some of the instructions. like for ex: wut r u supposed to do after phase 2 when u put ur start, also how do u make the stars? how do u make them glow, n so on.

MacRebisz In reply to bluenova25 [2010-01-09 20:48:02 +0000 UTC]
There are plenty of starfield tutorials, here I was just explaining my way of doing nebulae. After phase two you can experiment with blending modes, add some color layers, etc - use your imagination!

could u tell me where the grunge tool is? iv looked just about everywhere, i think, and i cant find it

There is no such tool as the grunge tool - there are however grungy looking brushes that you can download and use in PS. Search for "grunge brushes" here on deviantart and im sure you'll find a whole bunch.
